MP: 2 dead as tunnel collapses near Mhow
Bhopal: Two workers lost their lives on Wednesday when a section of an under-construction tunnel collapsed near Choral on the Indore-Ichhapur National Highway, officials said.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. at Tunnel Number 3, the part of a major infrastructure project, aimed at improving connectivity between Indore and Khandwa.
Speaking to IANS, Deputy Superintendent of Police Umakant Choudhary said, "Persistent heavy rainfall loosened the surrounding soil and triggered the collapse. It caused the outer face of the tunnel to give way. One worker died on the spot, while the other succumbed to injuries in a hospital."
The official also added, "A MERG report has been filed, and we will investigate the matter once the post-mortem reports are received. The investigation will focus on whether safety protocols were adequately followed, especially given the ongoing monsoon season, which often heightens the risk of such accidents."
The deceased have been identified as Vikas Rai, 29, a native of Jhonka Vermasia in Jharkhand's Giridih district, and Lalji Kaul, a resident of Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh.
"Both workers were reportedly staying in a labour camp near the construction site," the officer added.
Rai died on the spot after being buried under debris, while Kaul was initially admitted to a private hospital in Mhow and later referred to the Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital in Indore, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the local administration rushed to the site to oversee rescue operations and assess the structural integrity of the remaining tunnel sections.
The tunnel, being constructed by a Hyderabad-based private firm, is part of a 4.1-km stretch designed to reduce travel time and improve road safety by minimising sharp turns along the highway.
Both ends of the tunnel had recently been cleared, and strengthening work was underway.
The tunnel was scheduled to open for traffic in June 2026.
This incident has reignited concerns over construction safety in the region.
A few days earlier, a similar tragedy occurred in Jhabua district, where the roof of an under-construction cinema hall collapsed, killing two workers and injuring three others.
That project was reportedly being carried out without proper permissions, raising questions about regulatory oversight and enforcement.

Last Updated: The SC said allowing police or probe agencies to directly summon lawyers for advising clients was a "direct threat" to the independence of justice administration The Supreme Court on Wednesday raised concerns over the probe agencies and police being allowed to summon lawyers for advising clients. It said this can have a 'chilling effect" and would seriously undermine the autonomy of the legal profession. Observing this was a 'direct threat" to the independence of justice administration, a bench of Justices KV Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh explained how the legal profession was an integral component of the process of administration of justice. 'Permitting the investigating agencies/police to directly summon defense counsel or advocates who advise parties in a given case would seriously undermine the autonomy of legal profession and would even constitute a direct threat to the independence of the administration of justice," the bench said. The order came when the court was hearing a plea of a Gujarat-based advocate, challenging an order of the high court passed on June 12. The bench framed a couple of questions in the matter and said it directly impinged on the administration of justice 'to subject a professional… when he is a counsel in the matter… prima facie appears to be untenable, subject to further consideration by the court". 'Some of the questions which arise for consideration are: (1) when an individual has a association with a case only as a lawyer advising the party, could the investigating agency/prosecuting agency/police directly summon the lawyer for questioning?" the bench asked. 'Assuming that the investigating agency or prosecuting agency or police have a case that role of the individual is not merely as a lawyer but something more, even then, should they be directly permitted to summon or should a judicial oversight be prescribed for those exceptional criteria?" The bench further said 'what is at stake is the efficacy of the administration of justice and the capacity of the lawyers to conscientiously, and more importantly, fearlessly discharge their professional duties". WHAT IS THE SC ORDER? The SC was hearing a plea of a Gujarat-based advocate, challenging an order of the high court passed on June 12. The high court had refused to quash a notice summoning the lawyer before the police in a case against his client. The top court, however, directed the state not to summon him till further orders and stayed the operation of the police's notice issued to him. The bench also issued notice to the Gujarat government, asking for its response. It noted an agreement was executed in June last year between two persons in a loan transaction. In February, one of them got an FIR registered against the other following which the accused was arrested. The court noted the petitioner before it was engaged as a lawyer by the accused and he moved a bail application on behalf of his client before a sessions court in Ahmedabad. The accused was granted bail. But, a police notice in March summoned the lawyer to appear before police within three days. WHY IS THIS SIGNIFICANT? The issue assumes significance as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on June 20 directed its investigating officers not to issue summons to any advocate in a money laundering investigation being carried out against their client, adding that exception to this rule could only be made after 'approval" by the agency's director. The ED's statement came in the wake of the lawyer-client privilege linked controversy stemming from its summons to senior SC lawyers Arvind Datar and Pratap Venugopal. The counsel had offered legal advice to Care Health Insurance Limited (CHIL) on the employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) given to Rashmi Saluja, former chairperson of Religare Enterprises. The summons were condemned by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA), calling it a 'disturbing trend" that struck at the very foundations of the legal profession. The bar bodies urged the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to take suo motu cognisance of the matter. Suspected thief tied to police vehicle in Jammu, Mirwaiz asks: ‘Is this how Kashmiris will be treated in their own land?'

YouTube Star Mikayla Raines Dies By Suicide At 29, Husband Blames Online Bullying
Animal rescue activist and YouTube star Mikayla Raines died by suicide earlier this month, her husband, Ethan Raines, said on Monday in an emotional Instagram video. According to the post, the 29-year-old YouTuber took her own life after she allegedly faced bullying from people whom she considered "close friends". Mr Raines said that for years, his wife suffered from various mental health issues and struggled to cope with online criticism. "She couldn't bear what she was feeling any longer and she ended her life," he said in the video, adding that her death is "the biggest loss of my life." "We have suffered a loss that is unimaginable," Mr Raines wrote in the caption of the video. "Mikayla was truly the most amazing and inspiring individual I have ever known, and not having her here makes everything feel empty. I feel broken." "But I will continue her dream, and I hope to have your support going forward so that we can do good in her name," he added. He noted that the wildlife activist was "so sensitive to everything", which was "a double-edged sword". "On one hand, it allowed her endless empathy for those in her care. But it also means that she took everything negative to heart," he continued. Further, Mr Raines said that in recent years, his wife and her animal rescue non-profit had allegedly been the focus of an "online bullying campaign" from people she knew, including those who worked at "other animal sanctuaries". He said this "hurt her a lot", and while she initially "pushed through," things got worse in recent months when people "she considered her close friends" started joining in. "It breaks my heart that is selfless and devoted her life to animals could have so much negativity pointed at her," Mr Raines said. "Those of you that pushed her to this, every one of you that had been responsible for making her feel this way, I wish you had to feel what she felt. I wish you had to feel what I feel," he added. Mr Raines concluded the video, noting that if anyone felt "lost and hopeless," they should reach out to someone. He also said that people should continue to "look out" for their loved ones, "look for the signs" and "do something or say something before it's too late". He also said he intends to continue his wife's work to save foxes. Notably, Mikayla Raines created a nonprofit animal rescue organisation, SaveAFox Rescue, in 2017, when she was 20 years old. The organisation is dedicated to rescuing foxes from fur farms and providing them with "forever homes". According to its website, the NGO has saved more than 150 foxes.
