Sadanandan, who lost legs in violence, nominated to RS

1 2 3 4 5 Kozhikode: President Droupadi Murmu nominated Kerala BJP state vice-president and a victim of political violence in Kannur, C Sadanandan, to Rajya Sabha on Sunday. Sadanandan, 61, a retired teacher from Parinchery in Kannur, had lost his legs at the age of 30 in an attack by CPM cadres in 1994 when he was RSS Kannur sarkaryavahak. Sadanandan continued to be active in RSS and BJP, walking using prosthetic legs. He contested as a BJP candidate from Koothuparamba assembly constituency in 2016 and 2021. In his congratulatory message shared on X, PM Narendra Modi said Sadanandan's life was the epitome of courage and refusal to bow to injustice. "Violence and intimidation couldn't deter his spirit towards national development. His efforts as a teacher and social worker are also commendable," he said. Sadanandan expressed happiness over the nomination and said that Modi gave a hint in a telephonic conversation on Friday. "It's a decision which would provide strength to Kerala and party activities in the state," he said, adding that he viewed the decision as part of the party's efforts for realization of the concept of 'Vikasitha Keralam' the party has put forward before the people of Kerala rather than a message against political violence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Greenwich: If You Were Born Between 1940-1975 You Could Be Eligible For This Life Cover Reassured Get Quote Undo "Let us view those days as a nightmare and forget it. Such an atmosphere remained in Kannur for decades. But we worked hard to end the culture of 'eye for an eye' and it was a tolerance of sorts. As a result of that, there is now peace in Kannur and I want it to continue forever. So, I don't want it to be affected even with a word," he told reporters. The assault on Sadanandan, who came from a Communist family and was initially aligned with SFI before joining RSS in the 1980s, was allegedly to send across a warning to those who change sides and for setting up an RSS shakha at his village near Mattannur. On the night of Jan 25, 1994 when Sadanandan alighted from a bus at his village Uravachal, the assaulters grabbed him from behind, pinned him down and hacked off both his legs were and discarded them nearby. Sadanandan lay bleeding there for 15 minutes before police arrived. Though his severed legs were collected and rushed to the hospital, reattachment surgery was not available. Though he lost both his legs, his life could be saved. At the time of the brutal attack, Sadanandan was working at Kuzhikkal LP School in Kannur. Within hours, SFI activist K V Sudheesh was killed by RSS assailants in retaliation near Koothuparamba. Sadanandan later resumed his teaching career at Sri Durga Vilasam HSS at Peramangalam in Thrissur, retiring in April 2020. He also served as state president of Deseeya Adhyapaka Parishad. He had formally joined the RSS in 1984 and went on to serve in key roles including Sarkaryavah of Kannur district, Baudhik Pramukh of Kozhikode and Thrissur Mahanagar and later Vibhag Baudhik Pramukh of Ernakulam. Sadanandan is married to Vanitha Rani, a retired teacher. Yamunabharathi S is their daughter. By honouring Sadanandan's sacrifice, BJP brass aims to reinvigorate the cadre base in the state. Also, the decision is expected to bring the issue of political violence — which has left scores of people in Kannur either dead or maimed — to the national stage. His presence in Rajya Sabha is expected to provide a counter-narrative to allegations of political intolerance and erosion of democratic rights.

Union Minister Amit Shah targets 25 per cent vote share in upcoming Kerala local body polls

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Setting the BJP's poll agenda in the state, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday projected 25% vote share for the saffron party in the upcoming local body election. Addressing the party workers in Thiruvananthapuram, Shah trained guns on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and claimed the BJP-led NDA will form government in Kerala in 2026. Highlighting the Centre's contributions to Kerala's infrastructure, Shah said contrary to perception, central allocations to the state have increased. He pointed out that the railway budget allocation for Kerala, which was just Rs 372 crore in 2004, has increased to Rs 3,700 crore under the Modi government. The Union minister addressed a massive gathering of party workers at Putharikandam ground at the 'Vikasitha Keralam' (Developed Kerala) event, which marked a significant show of strength for the BJP in the state. In his speech, Shah lashed out at both the ruling LDF and the Opposition UDF, accusing them of decades of corruption and neglect. 'For real change, Kerala must stop rotating power between the UDF and LDF. Both these fronts focus only on the development of their cadre. Only the BJP can ensure the development of the state,' he said. Energising the crowd of around 30,000 party workers by raising 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' slogan, he took a swipe at CM Pinarayi Vijayan. 'Let our voices be loud enough so that even the chief minister, who is abroad, hears about this powerful gathering,' he said. Rejecting the perception that the BJP is a party limited to northern India, Shah pointed to its growth in Odisha, Tripura, Telangana and Assam. 'BJP is now a national party in every sense,' he said, urging the party's grassroots workers to take the message of 'Viksit Bharat' and 'Vikasitha Keralam' to every household. The Union home minister launched a fierce attack on the LDF and UDF, accusing them of turning Kerala into a hub of corruption and lawlessness. He also drew comparisons between major corruption scandals during their respective tenures. He termed the gold smuggling case as the 'biggest government-sponsored corruption'.

Discontent in BJP over posting of district office-bearers in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the honeymoon period over, discontent is brewing in the state BJP against state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, over the appointment of district office-bearers and alleged lack of coordination with senior leaders. After assuming office, Rajeev has been travelling across BJP's 30 organisational districts organising 'Vikasitha Keralam' conventions and has also announced new district office-bearers. The district presidents were appointed during the last leg of K Surendran's term as state president. Though there was open opposition against the appointment of some district presidents, including that of Palakkad, the social engineering strategy turned out in favour of the leadership. Surendran had appointed three district presidents from Christian community, nine from Ezhava and 13 from the Nair community. Four women and two leaders from Scheduled Caste were also appointed as district presidents. However, allegations have come up from several districts against these appointments of new district office-bearers. It is alleged that the new appointments were carried out without considering the opinion of district presidents. Several district presidents TNIE spoke to said that usually the new president and state leadership would consider the list submitted by the district presidents before taking a final decision. 'However, this time that process did not happen.

Rajeev ridicules LDF's campaign for third term

BJP State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar has ridiculed the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's proposed campaign seeking a third term for Pinarayi Vijayan as Chief Minister. Opening a 'Vikasitha Keralam' convention, an event to portray the BJP's development goals for Kerala, organised by the party's Kozhikode city district committee here on Sunday (April 27), Mr. Chandrasekhar said that the LDF's catchword for the campaign was reported to be Thudarum (To be continued...). 'What is going to be continued? The plight of the Accredited Social Health Activists, who have been denied even a ₹100 salary hike? Or is it the growing unemployment? Agricultural crisis? Or is it the price rise?' he asked. Mr. Chandrasekhar wondered what was the point in electing a government for another term if it was not able to solve people's problems. The BJP leader alleged that development had come to a standstill in the State because of the flawed policies of both the Congress and the LDF. 'Both of them were deceiving people after promising them big dreams.' Mr. Chandrasekhar claimed that Kerala had not been able to keep up with the pace of development works initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the past 11 years in other parts of the country. He said that the BJP was the only party which had fulfilled its promises to bring in changes in people's lives. Mr. Chandrasekhar also accused the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League of playing vote bank politics and the Left of indulging in corruption and violence. K. Surendran and P.K. Krishnadas, former State presidents of the BJP, senior party leader M.T. Ramesh, and K.P. Prakash Babu, president of the city district committee, among others, were present.
