Fishermen return with ample catch on the first day after ban period
The shores of Pamban South and Mandapam on Wednesday morning witnessed a busy crowd selling and buying the first catch of fish after the 61-day fishing ban period.
When the ban period ended on June 14, fishermen in Rameswaram, Pamban, Mandapam and other areas restrained from entering the sea in view of the heavy wind alert issued by the Fisheries Department.
After the authorities permitted fishing, the fishermen from Pamban South and Mandapam ventured into the sea on more than 250 trawlers on Tuesday morning and returned to the shore on Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday, more than 3,000 fishermen from Rameswaram and Pamban North launched their boats into the sea for fishing.
The marine resources which replenished themselves during the ban period yielded a wide variety of fishes to the fishermen.
As boats returned with ample fish varieties such as Seela, Paarai, Vilai meen, Nagarai, Mural, Kilathi, Oozhi and Soovarai, the public and the traders awaiting on the shore for the return of the boats, plunged into the crowd for negotiating their prices with the fishermen.
