Qualcomm to acquire semiconductor firm Alphawave Semi for $2.4B
In Brief Qualcomm has agreed to acquire Alphawave Semi, a U.K.-based semiconductor company focused on high-speed data center connectivity, for around $2.4 billion. According to Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, the deal will help Qualcomm grow its data center business. 'The combined teams share the goal of building advanced technology solutions and enabling next-level connected computing performance across a wide array of high-growth areas, including data center infrastructure,' Amon said in a press release. Qualcomm's acquisition of Alphawave, which makes a range of wired connectivity and compute technologies, comes a few months after the bigger chip company bought the generative AI division of Vietnamese startup VinAI, as well as internet of things company Edge Impulse. Qualcomm has sought to diversify its portfolio as it faces headwinds, including a weakening smartphone market — smartphone processors make up a big portion of Qualcomm's revenue — and potentially tariffs. The deal is expected to close during the first calendar quarter of 2026.

Qualcomm acquires MovianAI to strengthen genAI portfolio
US chipmaker Qualcomm has announced the acquisition of Vietnamese AI developer MovianAI for undisclosed sum. MovianAI is the generative AI (genAI) arm of VinAI Application and Research JSC, a machine learning research lab. VinAI is a unit of Vingroup, one of Vietnam's largest conglomerates. Led by Dr Hung Bui, former Google DeepMind research scientist, MovianAI's parent organisation VinAI's generative AI team has significant expertise in AI, from advanced research to the development of customised AI models and engineering. Commenting on the acquisition, Bui, the founder and CEO of VinAI said: 'We are ready to contribute to Qualcomm's mission of making breakthroughs in fundamental AI research and scale them across industries, including smartphones, PCs, software-defined vehicles, and more. 'Our team's expertise in generative AI and machine learning will help accelerate the development of innovative solutions that can transform the way we live and work.' The integration of VinAI's generative AI research and development (R&D) capabilities with Qualcomm's R&D efforts is expected to enhance the company's ability to innovate in the AI sector, the chipmaker said. Qualcomm Technologies engineering senior vice-president Jilei Hou said: 'This acquisition underscores our commitment to dedicating the necessary resources to R&D that makes us the driving force behind the next wave of AI innovation. 'By bringing in high-calibre talent from VinAI, we are strengthening our ability to deliver cutting-edge AI solutions that will benefit a wide range of industries and consumers.' For more than two decades, Qualcomm is said to have collaborated with the Vietnamese technology ecosystem to develop and deliver new solutions. In October 2024, UK-based semiconductor company Arm Holdings notified Qualcomm of the cancellation of their architectural license agreement. Vietnamese Billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong's VinGroup Sells AI Venture To Qualcomm
AI. Big data concept. 3D render getty Vingroup—controlled by billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong, Vietnam's wealthiest person—has sold its generative artificial intelligence (AI) division to U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm. Qualcomm has acquired MovianAI Artificial Intelligence Application and Research, the San Diego, California-based company said in a statement, without disclosing the amount. MovianAI is the former generative AI division of VinAI Application and Research JSC, part of Vingroup, Vietnam's largest conglomerate. 'By bringing in high-caliber talent from VinAI, we are strengthening our ability to deliver cutting-edge AI solutions that will benefit a wide range of industries and consumers,' said Jilei Hou, senior vice president of engineering at Qualcomm. This acquisition will help make Qualcomm 'the driving force behind the next wave of AI innovation.' VinAI founder and CEO Hung Bui, who previously worked at Google DeepMind, will join Qualcomm as part of the deal. He built VinAI's expertise in generative AI, machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. Qualcomm said it has been building up its AI research and development capabilities internally to create advanced AI solutions for smartphones, computers, and vehicles. 'We are ready to contribute to Qualcomm's mission of making breakthroughs in fundamental AI research and scale them across industries,' Hung said. 'Our team's expertise in generative AI and machine learning will help accelerate the development of innovative solutions that can transform the way we live and work.' The U.S. tech giant said it's been working with the Vietnamese technology ecosystem in the past two decades to create and deliver innovative solutions. Its innovations in the areas of 5G, AI, Internet of Things and automotive helped boost Vietnam's information and communication technology industry and put Vietnamese companies globally. With a real-time net worth of $7.7 billion, Pham got his start from an instant noodles business he founded in Ukraine in 1993. He sold the business to Nestle in 2010, using the proceeds to start Vingroup, which has since grown to become a diversified conglomerate with interests in real estate, retail, healthcare, education, autos and technology.
