Bail pleas rejected in QR code scam case
Kochi: High court has dismissed the pre-arrest bail pleas of Vineetha and Radhu, natives of Thiruvananthapuram, who are accused in a case involving the alleged theft of Rs 69 lakh from a shop owned by Diya Krishnan, daughter of actor-turned-politician G Krishnakumar. The bench of Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas rejected the petition based on the police report, which, after examining the petitioners' bank account details, indicated that there was a prima facie case against them. The case arose from the allegation that the petitioners, who were employees at Diya's shop at Kowdiar in Thiruvananthapuram, committed the theft by replacing the shop's QR code scanner. According to the complaint, the alleged fraud began in July 2024 and came to light only during an audit conducted last month. Based on Diya's complaint, the police registered a case against Vineetha, Radhu and Divya. Vineetha and Radhu subsequently approached HC seeking anticipatory bail.

Crime Branch takes over financial fraud case
The Crime Branch has taken over the investigation into a financial fraud case involving the misappropriation of funds from a store owned by Diya, daughter of actor G. Krishnakumar. The probe will be led by a team under Crime Branch D.K. Prithviraj. The files of the two cases, registered in connection with the controversy, have been officially transferred from the Museum Police to the Crime Branch, official sources said. While one case pertains to the alleged embezzlement of ₹69 lakh by three former employees of Diya's establishment, the other relates to the alleged abduction of the trio, who are believed to be absconding. The accused persons, identified as Vineetha, Divya, Radhakumari, and Vineetha's husband Adarsh, have been accused of diverting payments meant for the store by replacing its QR code with their personal UPI QR codes. The Thiruvananthapuram Principal Sessions Court will likely consider the anticipatory bail pleas of the three accused on Monday. A counter complaint filed by the women, alleging harassment by Krishnakumar and his family, is also expected to be taken up by the court.

Tamil Nadu man gets death sentence in 2022 Kerala murder case
A court in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday handed over death sentence to a 42-year-old Tamil Nadu man who was convicted earlier this month of murdering a 38-year-old Kerala woman employed at a plant nursery in 2022. The convict Rajendran, originally from Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu, was ordered to be 'hanged by the neck till he is dead' by judge Prasun Mohan of Thiruvananthapuram Additional District and Sessions Court VII for the murder of Vineetha on February 6, 2022. He was also fined ₹4 lakh by the court and in case of default of the fine, there would be additional imprisonment for five years and a month. The fines are to be paid to the minor children of Vineetha who are living with their grandparents, the court said. Stating that the convict is also an accused in the case of 2014 murder of three of a family in Kanyakumari, in which the trial is progressing in a lower court, the prosecution in the Vineetha case argued before the court that Rajendran was a serial killer who posed a threat to society and had no chances of reformation. The trial court accepted the prosecution's argument. 'There were no eyewitnesses to the murder. So we had to reply on circumstantial and scientific evidence along with forensic clues to pin the charges on the accused. We have been successful in doing that. The accused uses a moderus operandi that's brutal and inhuman. He killed Vineetha in Trivandrum while he was out on bail in a triple homicide case in TN. So it's very clear that he is a threat to society,' public prosecutor Salahudeen told reporters. Vineetha's mother said she was satisfied with the court's verdict on the death sentence. On April 10, the accused Rajendran was convicted by Judge Mohan under section 302 (murder), 447 (criminal trespass), 397 (robbery causing grievous hurt or death) and 201 (destruction of evidence) under the IPC. The police had found that Rajendran, who has degrees in history and economics, was addicted to online stock trading and turned to committing burglaries and murders in order to fund his investments. On February 6, 2022, the Tamil Nadu man entered the plant nursery where Vineetha worked in the guise of buying pots and proceeded to stab at her neck from behind with a knife. He then fled with the 4.5 sovereigns of gold chain she was wearing. Stains of his blood, incurred during the tussle with Vineetha, on the wall of the shop proved to be a key piece of evidence for the prosecution.

TN native gets death penalty in 2022 Vineetha murder case in Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ruling that the 2022 Ambalamukku Vineetha murder case fell in the 'rarest of the rare' category, the Thiruvananthapuram Additional Sessions Court on Thursday handed capital punishment to Tamil Nadu native Rajendran. The court sentenced the 40-year-old resident of Thovala in TN's Kanyakumari district to death saying he was not entitled to any leniency. The parents of Vineetha, 38, and her two minor children were present in court at the time of the sentencing. The court also fined Rajendran Rs 4 lakh and said the money should go to the children. The court had perused the various reports submitted by the district collector, police and other government agencies on Rajendran's mental condition, conduct and behaviour to arrive at the decision. It had sought the reports after the prosecution demanded capital punishment for Rajendran, arguing that Vineetha's murder fell in the 'rarest of the rare' category. Special Public Prosecutor M Salahudeen argued Rajendran was a serial killer and that three of his four victims were women. The district collector's report said Rajendran was a psychopath engaged in killing, with little chance for reformation. It also supported the prosecution's argument seeking the noose for him and said, 'his extermination is the only course of action to save innocent people...' The report by the Thiruvananthapuram city police commissioner said Rajendran was a hardcore criminal arraigned in a triple-murder case and could not be rehabilitated. Reports by the probation officers of Thiruvananthapuram, Nagercoil and Nanguneri said Rajendran was a cold-blooded killer and posed a threat to society. And while they ruled out any psychiatric issue, mental health experts said Rajendran had Cluster B personality traits characterised by dramatic, emotional and erratic behaviour. Rajendran had sought clemency saying he had to look after his 70-year-old mother. He also said he did not commit the crime as alleged by the prosecution and hence did not have remorse. The defence counsel had urged the court to consider his age and educational qualifications – Rajendran has five degrees and two PG degrees. The request was overturned. Vineetha, 38, who worked at a nursery, was killed by Rajendran on February 6, 2022. A team led by the then City Police Commissioner G Sparjan Kumar and comprising then Cantonment ACP V S Dinaraj, Peroorkada Inspector V Sajikumar and others had probed the case.
