🔬 The Debrief as Club World Cup group stage comes to an end
The Club World Cup group stage came to an end overnight with the last 16 now firmly in place. Here's what went down. You can sign up to DAZN to watch every FIFA Club World Cup game for free. What happened? 📝 Manchester City were at their swaggering best as they hammered Juventus 5-2 in Orlando. Erling Haaland got in on the goals whilst Rayan Cherki looked superb in the City attack. Advertisement Elsewhere in Group G, Al Ain won their first game of the competition edging past Wydad 2-1 to send the Moroccans home in ignominy. Group H was the final foursome to finish and Real Madrid comfortably booked their place in the knockout rounds with a 3-0 victory against Salzburg. That meant Al Hilal needed three points against Pachuca to qualify, and that's exactly what they did with Salem Aldawsari starring from midfield in a 2-0 win. Player of the Day 🔥 It was no Kylian Mbappé, no problem for Real Madrid with Vinicius Jnr looking better than ever for Los Blancos. The Brazil international opened the scoring against Salzburg before brilliantly assisting Federico Valverde for their second. Stat of the Day 📊 A genuine goal machine ... What this means 🤔 The group stage is now complete with the tournament entering its last 16 phase. Advertisement Manchester City will face Al Hilal in a fascinating encounter on Tuesday evening whilst Miami will host a battle of the European heavyweights between Real Madrid and Juventus. What they said 🗣️ 📸 CHARLY TRIBALLEAU - AFP or licensors "We rediscovered a style of play we haven't had in a long time. We had a lot of injuries and we had lost the energy we had. It was very good for us to be together during this time. We played against a strong team today and we did very well. Now we're going to dinner and we'll see who we'll face on Monday." Pep Guardiola, Manchester City coach Advertisement "We are delighted with the performance, with the result. Now we have gone through first in the group and we carry on. Juventus are one of the historic teams in Europe, they have a good team and it's going to be really tough." Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid coach "[Against Manchester City], we just have to play as a team. Like we did against Real Madrid, like we did the last game and today. So we need to do the same. We are playing against, for me, one of the top three teams in the world. I know them very well. They changed a lot of players, but I know them very well, the coach [and] some friends that I have there from Portugal as well. I played against them a few times when I was in England, and it was not easy. But we'll do our best, of course. We will prepare the game like we did on these three games, and let's see what happens." Ruben Neves, Al Hilal midfielder What's next? 👀 For the first time in almost two weeks we have a break in play which means you can enjoy France taking on Brazil in the women's game later this evening. 📸 CHANDAN KHANNA - AFP or licensors

Real Madrid 'consider letting Vinicius Jnr move on amid tense contract discussions' - with Brazil star demanding nearly DOUBLE Kylian Mbappe's salary and using a multi-million-pound Saudi deal 'which doesn't exist' as leverage
Vinicius Jnr is believed to be seeking to improve upon his contract extension terms with Real Madrid by leveraging his deal against an offer with Saudi Arabia - which reportedly does not exist - with some at the club would be reportedly keen for him to take up. The Brazilian forward is one of the brightest stars amongst Los Blancos ' galacticos and was thought to be close to signing a deal to prolong his stay at the Bernabeu. Vinicius is currently contracted through until 2027 and is one of the highest earners at the club, but the finer points of a new deal are still yet to be confirmed. The ongoing negotiations come against the backdrop of an imperfect season for the LaLiga giants, who could end the campaign without silverware after all but confirming the title for Barcelona after defeat in Sunday's El Clasico. Earlier this year, it was claimed Vinicius was offered a five-year deal worth £830million to play in Saudi in a deal that would also see him become an ambassador for the 2034 World Cup. But a recent report by Marca has stressed that not only does the player not have a Saudi deal to firm up his negotiating with Real Madrid, finalisation of the extension is some way off. As per the Spanish outlet, there remains some difference between the salary increase requested by the player - which would take his deal from less than £14.3m (€17m) per annum, to a staggering £25.5m (€30m) - and Real Madrid's expectations. Vinicius' current deal, which he signed in 2022, is similar to fellow high earner Kylian Mbappe, who joined the club last summer in a much-anticipated move. It is still higher than that of Jude Bellingham, who was reportedly offered much more favourable terms on the heels of his blockbuster debut season in 2023-24. But in a bid to get the deal over the line, representatives of Vinicius at Roc Nation Brazil are purported to have talked up their discussions with Saudi Pro League sides, which are thought to be proactive. However, no concrete rival deal is believed to exist at present. Vinicius will be hopeful of extending him time at the Bernabeu despite his brief dip in form over this term, but as per the Spanish outlet, there are thought to be rumblings of discontent among the club's hierarchy over his behaviour. Should a Saudi deal materialise, it is thought that there are a few voices who could advocate for the player's move to the Gulf state, just one year on from the campaign which almost secured him the Ballon d'Or. For his part however, Vinicius has been confident that an agreement will be reached ahead of the club's welcoming of soon-to-be-appointed head coach Xabi Alonso. 'I have a contract until 2027, but I have always said that I want to play here for a long time, to be able to make history and to receive the affection of the fans along with the president, all the players and the coaching staff,' he said in February. 'And God willing, hopefully in the next few days all the negotiations can be resolved and I can stay here for much longer.'

Vinicius Jnr 'makes decision on Real Madrid future amid £830m five-year deal on offer from Saudi Arabia'
Vinicius Jnr is reportedly closing in on committing his future to Real Madrid by signing a new deal. Vinicius, 24, has shone for Real since joining the club from Flamengo for £38million at the age of 18, scoring 105 goals and adding 79 assists. The forward has developed into one of the best players in the world during his time at the Bernabeu and he has won 14 trophies with the Spanish giants, including two Champions League titles. However, with the Brazilian's contract set to expire in the summer of 2027, his future has been a hot topic of conversation in recent months. Reports have continued to link Vinicius with a move to Saudi Arabia, while he was said to have rejected an original contract offer from Real. Earlier this year, it was claimed Vinicius was offered a five-year deal worth £830m to play in Saudi in a deal that would also see him become an ambassador for the 2034 World Cup that takes place in the kingdom. But, according to Marca, Vinicius is set to end the speculation by extending and improving his contract with Real. The report claims an agreement is close to being finalised, with the Brazilian's new deal set to run until 2030. Both Real and Vinicius are on the same page over their future plans and the club is confident that it is a matter of time until the new deal is signed, potentially before the end of the season. When pressed on his future back in February, Vinicius - who has won 39 caps for Brazil - had hinted his future lies with Real. 'I have a contract until 2027, but I have always said that I want to play here for a long time, to be able to make history and to receive the affection of the fans along with the president, all the players and the coaching staff,' he said. 'And God willing, hopefully in the next few days all the negotiations can be resolved and I can stay here for much longer.' Real boss Carlo Ancelotti has also previously poured cold water on rumours linking Vinicius with Saudi Arabia. Speaking back in February, he added: 'Yes, I'm tired of this topic but I'm not worried. I see him happy and we are happy with him. There's nothing more to add with respect to what I said a week or two weeks ago. 'It's not a topic that we discuss here. He [Vinicius] doesn't discuss it. All I can tell you is what I see here, he is happy, eager to do things well and make history with the club. 'I see the same Vinicius as always, very eager to do things well.' The news comes amid what has been a mixed season for Vinicius and Real. Los Blancos are currently second in LaLiga, seven points adrift of arch-rivals Barcelona, while they were comfortably knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Arsenal. They face Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday, but given their poor run of form in recent months, Ancelotti is widely expected to leave the club come the end of the season. Meanwhile, Vinicius missed out on winning the Ballon d'Or last year and while he has still scored 20 goals in 46 games, the Brazilian struggled to impact both legs of their damaging defeat by the Gunners in Europe.
