Blind Melon, Everclear, Melvins, Red Kross coming to Vinyl Music Hall
The Rolling Stones once wrote "it's the singer, not the song." But what if it's a little of both?
Blind Melon is hoping for the latter. Years after the band's early 1990s success with "No Rain" and its ubiquitous video, and the 1995 death of neo-hippie guru frontman Shannon Hoon, Blind Melon is back, and will perform at Pensacola's Vinyl Music Hall on Aug. 15.
The band reformed in 2006 with new frontman Travis Warren and are currently touring the United States.
The band's last album, and the only one featuring Warren on vocals, is 2008's "For My Friends." General admission tickets for the Vinyl Music Hall show are $44.79 and are available at
Blind Melon exploded onto the rock scene in late 1992 with its self-titled debut album and soon became an MTV staple with a groovy haze and the "Bee Girl" featuring a young girl, Heather DeLoach, in a bee costume tap dancing around throughout the song.
"I loved it,'' said Kathy Calhoun of Pensacola, who was a "teen" when the video came out. "I never got a chance to see them live because I was too young, but I've always loved that album. It was a part of growing up."
Hoon, a Louisiana native, died in 1995 at the age of 28 just months after the release of the band's second album, "Soup." Of the current Blind Melon, three are original members − lead guitarist Rogers Stevens, rhythm guitarist Christopher Thorn and drummer Glen Graham. Bassist Nathan Towne joined Blind Melon in 2017, replacing original bassist Brad Smith.
Opening act for Blind Melon in Pensacola is Glazed Eyes.
Blind Melon is just one of the bigger names coming to Vinyl Music Hall in the upcoming months.
Alternative rock favorites from the 1990s, Everclear, will perform at Vinyl Music Hall on Oct. 5 celebrating the 30th anniversary of the band's of-the-moment "Sparkle & Fade" album. "Sparkle & Fade" was the band's sophomore album and featured the singles "Santa Monica,'' "Heroin Girl'' and "Heartspark Dollarsign."
Tickets are $58.63. Opening bands are Sponge and Local H.
The mighty Melvins along with (a personal favorite) Red Kross will perform Oct. 10 at Vinyl Music Hall.
Melvins is a much-loved sludge-grunge-metal outfit who have consistently and confoundingly at times produced a rich body of work that is often dissonant, often abrasive, often exhilarating and cathartic. Red Kross, which held its first practice in April of 1979, features brothers Steve and Jeff McDonald, who, through the decades, have crafted albums that range from ear-candy power pop to pure punk rock.
Tickets for the Melvins/Red Kross show are $37.88.
