News 8 Primetime 585 Elite Awards: Boys field
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Here are the News 8 Primetime 585 Elite Award winners for boys field. Our large school boys award goes to one of the best high jumpers in the nation! This junior is his school's record holder in the high jump for both indoor and outdoor seasons. His regular season featured a 15th place finish at the New Balance Nationals. He finished 4th in the high jump at sectionals, but turned it on for the state competitions. He was first in the state qualifying event with a jump of 6-foot-9. He took that up an inch at the state finals, clearing 6-foot-10 to finish number two in New York. That height placed this athlete among the top 15 high jumpers in the country this winter. Our large school boys field athlete Elite Award winner is Beckham Taylor from Pittsford Sutherland. Our small school winner is another two-time Elite Award winter champ. This junior had a dominant regular season which featured a variety of event wins including a long jump and triple jump championship at the Virginia Showcase, which invites the best high school athletes in the country. At sectionals he won the long jump by five feet, and the triple jump by seven feet! He was first in both events at the state qualifier as well, but elected not to compete in the state championships. His long jump of 24 feet, 10.75 inches was the second-best distance of any jumper in the country. His best triple jump, at 50 feet and 8.5 inches, was number one in the country, by more than five inches. News 8 Primetime 585 Elite Awards: Boys track
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – It is time for our Primetime 585 Elite Award winners for boys track. This senior had remarkable improvement this indoor season. He broke school records in the 3200 and the 1600. He then won three individual sectional titles helping his team to a championship by over 100 points. At the state finals he broke his own school record for the 1000 and placed in the top 10. He then competed at Nike Indoor Nationals where he anchored a sprint medley and ran the 800 meters in a minute and 55.14 seconds to win the Emerging Elite division. The News 8 Primetime Elite Award winner for small schools goes to Cameron Garafalo of Batavia. Our large school winner is a Junior who has been a force in Section V Track and Field since grade 8. This season he was undefeated in the 55-meter dash. He placed first in sectionals and first in the state qualifying event and first at states in the 55. Winning both the Public and Federation State title that makes him the fastest high schooler in New York State. His time of 6.35 in those meets is the second fastest in Section V history. His season also featured three trips to national events including a sixth-place finish in the 200 at the Virginia Showcase. Primetime 585 Shining Star: Rhoan Kaulder
ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) – Our Wednesday Primetime 585 Shining Star puts the spotlight on Rhoan Kaulder, a junior at McQuaid Jesuit High School! This young track star was thrown into the limelight at a young age, and his talent truly speaks for itself. He started his track career at age 6. Provided: Primetime 585 By 7 years old, Kaulder was competing in USATF Jr. Olympics where he was All-American, coming in 7th in the 100-meter dash. He set records in this event, and at this same age, he found himself doing quite well in the long jump and began competing in his first field event. Through his discovery, he eventually began expanding his talents, running indoors at the Ocean Breeze under the same circuit, USATF. Throughout his track career, he managed to maintain his All-American status and has gotten onto the podium in 1st-8th places for his sprints and long jump, including just last summer during the Jr. Olympic meet. He was All-American in both the 100-meter and long jump events. In 8th grade, he became the first ever in the history of Section V and New York State to win a State Championship at his age, winning the long jump in 2022 with a leap of 22'10, setting an 8th grade state record. He has been in All State competitions from eighth grade forward, and has made All Greater Rochester first team for every year in track and field from eighth grade on. He always makes it to the national meets for both indoor and outdoor track at New Balance, and has been invited to many high-profile track and field meets, including the Virginia Showcase, Penn Relays, The Loucks Games, and more. This past weekend he won States for the 55m with a time of 6.35s, tying his season best.
