Devotees pull Srirangam temple car amidst religious fervour
Spiritual fervour pervaded Srirangam on Saturday as a large number of devotees converged in the temple town to pull the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple car as part of the Chithirai Ther festival.
The festival, also known as Virupan Thirunal, commenced on April 18 and the temple car run on the ninth day is the highpoint of the 11-day event.
Early on Saturday, the processional deity, Sri Namperumal, was brought out in a procession from the Kannadi Arai and placed on the decorated temple car. The car run began at around 6.30 a.m. and was pulled by devotees around the Chithirai streets of the temple.
Ahead of the car run, traditional temple honours from Sri Andal Temple in Srivilliputhur, including garlands and holy 'vastram,' for Sri Namperumal were received by the Srirangam temple authorities on Friday.
The festival will conclude on April 28 with Aalum Pallakku.
