Citizens form human chain against Dongri Metro car shed
Mira Bhayander: Around 6,000 citizens of Mira Bhayander took to the streets on a Sunday morning and formed a human chain, silently protesting against tree felling at Dongri for the Metro Line 9 and Metro 7A, reports Vishal Rajemahadik. Mira-Bhayandar's major natural oxygen source, biodiversity, and local agriculture is in grave danger with car shed plans at Dongri, alleged the protestors. Villagers have warned that the agitation would be intensified if the tree felling continues. Last week, there was a huge uproar as activists and locals alleged the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) axed down trees without proper permissions and alleged they had understated the age of trees in its official report to reduce compensatory planting requirements and evade higher penalties. As per environmental activists and locals, satellite imagery from 2013 clearly shows the presence of mature trees in the area, some over 15 years old. However, MMRDA's contractor-reported data claims these trees were only four to six years old. Cop assaulted in train, loses tooth
Mira Bhayandar : A newly recruited police constable in Mira Bhayandar was assaulted by four people when he boarded a Churchgate-bound local train at Bhayandar station on June 30 morning. He was headed to Pune for some official work. The incident followed an argument with a train passenger who was joned in by three others. He filed the complaint after returning from Pune on July 1 at Vasai Road. The main accused, Keyur Gosaliya, has been arrested. —Vishal Rajemahadik

Teen accidentally shoots herself with pal's gun in Maharashtra
Representative image PALGHAR: A 17-year-old girl accidentally shot herself in the neck with her 18-year-old male friend's illegal country-made gun at a homestay in Kelwa, in Maharashtra's Palghar district, on Friday, reports Vishal Rajemahadik. The girl is undergoing treatment in the ICU of a hospital in Boisar, said police who have arrested the friend and booked him for kidnapping and attempt to murder under the BNS as well as under the Arms Act. They are also verifying if the homestay, Raut Residency, where the couple had rented a room, had followed the mandatory check-in formalities as the girl is a minor. Palghar superintendent of police Yatish Deshmukh said that when the 18-year-old was in another room, the girl got her hands on the firearm and accidentally pulled the trigger and got shot in the neck. On receiving an alert, police reached the homestay and rushed the girl to a nearby hospital. Later, she was shifted to the Boisar hospital. Police also seized the illegal firearm and detained the boy for questioning. He was later placed under arrest. Police said they will produce him in court on Saturday to seek his custody. Deshmukh confirmed that the firearm was sent for forensics analysis and the report is awaited.

Auto driver held for assaulting woman over fare dispute
Mira Bhayandar : An autorickshaw driver has been arrested for allegedly abusing and assaulting a 28-year-old woman passenger near Mira Road station around 8.15 pm on Saturday following a dispute over payment of fare. A complaint filed by the woman at Nayanagar police station says she had hired an autorickshaw to reach Mira Road railway station. She has stated that she had to pay Rs 51 as fare, but did not have enough cash on her, and so she offered to pay via online mode. The driver refused to accept online payment and insisted that she pay cash. The woman said that since she was in a rush, she placed Rs 45 — all the cash she had on her -- on the driver's seat and was about to leave when the driver hurled abuses at her. —Vishal Rajemahadik

Man booked for derogatory comments against Shivaji
Vasai: A 37-year-old man from Nalasopara was arrested on Friday by the Tulinj police following allegations of making disrespectful remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in a society WhatsApp group. The incident occurred during a discussion about language-related matters, according to the complainant. Group members initially attempted to address the issue through phone calls and messages, but the accused responded with offensive language and showed no remorse for his statements, police said.
