Representative image PALGHAR: A 17-year-old girl accidentally shot herself in the neck with her 18-year-old male friend's illegal country-made gun at a homestay in Kelwa, in Maharashtra's Palghar district, on Friday, reports Vishal Rajemahadik. The girl is undergoing treatment in the ICU of a hospital in Boisar, said police who have arrested the friend and booked him for kidnapping and attempt to murder under the BNS as well as under the Arms Act. They are also verifying if the homestay, Raut Residency, where the couple had rented a room, had followed the mandatory check-in formalities as the girl is a minor. Palghar superintendent of police Yatish Deshmukh said that when the 18-year-old was in another room, the girl got her hands on the firearm and accidentally pulled the trigger and got shot in the neck. On receiving an alert, police reached the homestay and rushed the girl to a nearby hospital. Later, she was shifted to the Boisar hospital. Police also seized the illegal firearm and detained the boy for questioning. He was later placed under arrest. Police said they will produce him in court on Saturday to seek his custody. Deshmukh confirmed that the firearm was sent for forensics analysis and the report is awaited.

Mira Bhayandar : An autorickshaw driver has been arrested for allegedly abusing and assaulting a 28-year-old woman passenger near Mira Road station around 8.15 pm on Saturday following a dispute over payment of fare. A complaint filed by the woman at Nayanagar police station says she had hired an autorickshaw to reach Mira Road railway station. She has stated that she had to pay Rs 51 as fare, but did not have enough cash on her, and so she offered to pay via online mode. The driver refused to accept online payment and insisted that she pay cash. The woman said that since she was in a rush, she placed Rs 45 — all the cash she had on her -- on the driver's seat and was about to leave when the driver hurled abuses at her. —Vishal Rajemahadik

Vasai: A 37-year-old man from Nalasopara was arrested on Friday by the Tulinj police following allegations of making disrespectful remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in a society WhatsApp group. The incident occurred during a discussion about language-related matters, according to the complainant. Group members initially attempted to address the issue through phone calls and messages, but the accused responded with offensive language and showed no remorse for his statements, police said. Mira Bhayandar: The Vasai Government Railway Police (GRP) registered a case on Friday against an unknown person after two empty wooden boxes usually used for fruit packaging were found on the railway tracks. The case was filed for criminal trespass , wrongful restraint and endangering human life or personal safety along with sections of the Railway Act. The incident happened on Friday night around 9pm after the motorman of the Virar bound local train saw some objects on the tracks the moment it left Mira Road railway station, on the western line. After stopping the train, the motorman alerted the station manager, who in-turn called the GRP. The GRP visited the spot and then registered a complaint at Vasai GRP station. The spot where the object was placed, was close to Mira road railway station, after the train had left for Bhayandar. —Vishal Rajemahadik

Vasai: Bolinj police in Virar have arrested a Pune man for allegedly defrauding two people of Rs 12 lakh under the pretext of starting an animal birth control (ABC) centre. The accused was arrested from Pune last Saturday and remanded in five days of police custody with Bolinj cops. More FIRs are filed against the accused, Harshvardhan Chaudhary, at Ghatkopar's Parksite and Khar police stations as well. Bolinj residents said they met the accused in 2023, who said an investor who was willing to shell out Rs 45 lakh to start an ABC centre, had backed out. They then transferred money into his mother's account. Later they learned he had bought a car and refused to return their money and threatened them.
