VTU Kalaburagi Regional Centre distributes laptops among SC/ST students

In an initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide and promoting inclusive education, the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) Regional Centre in Kalaburagi distributed laptops to 70 eligible students from Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities. The distribution ceremony took place at the VTU's Regional Centre for Postgraduate Studies in Kalaburagi on Friday. Beneficiaries included students from MTech programmes (CSE, VLSI, CCT, and CHT), MCA, MBA, and undergraduate courses in Computer Science and Electronics. Addressing the students on the occasion, B. Shambhu Lingappa, director of VTU's Regional Centre for Postgraduate Studies, Kalaburagi, lauded VTU Vice-Chancellor S. Vidyashankar for consistently prioritising student welfare and holistic development. 'Mr. Vidyashankar's initiatives to distribute laptops among the students from marginalised sections for enhancing the academic and technical proficiency of students is commendable. This initiative, spearheaded by VTU's SC/ST Cell, is a significant step towards ensuring equal access to digital resources and fostering educational empowerment. It reflects the university's commitment to supporting students from disadvantaged communities in their academic pursuits. The procurement and implementation of the laptop distribution programme was made possible through the efforts of Pralhad Rathod, Liaison Officer (Belagavi), who played a pivotal role in its execution,' he said. He also reaffirmed VTU's dedication to providing all students with an equitable and technologically advanced learning environment by stating that the initiative marked another significant stride towards empowering students from underprivileged backgrounds and reducing the digital divide in higher education. Programme coordinators M.A. Waheed, Satish Upalonkar, and Brijbhushan, SC/ST Coordinator Rahul Moolbharati were present.

Holy texts desecrated, communal tension on Belagavi outskirts

BELAGAVI: In a disturbing incident, unidentified miscreants desecrated copies of the Quran and Hadith kept at a mosque in Santi Bastwad village on the outskirts of Belagavi. The religious texts were found at an under-construction site next to the mosque. The incident came to light early Monday morning when people came to the mosque to pray and found the Quran and Hadith missing from the ground floor of the mosque. After searching, they found the holy books in the plot. The situation quickly became tense at Santi Bastwad and adjoining areas. Belagavi Police Commissioner Iada Martin and DCP (Law and order) Rohan Jagadish rushed to the spot and arranged heavy police bandobast to prevent the situation from going out of control. A large number of Muslim youth protested in front of police officials, demanding that the culprits be arrested within two days. They said previous similar incidents had not led to any arrests as the police had not taken stringent measures. The protesting youth wanted to march from Chennamma Circle to the DC's office. When the police denied permission for protest at Chennamma Circle and instead told them to hold their march near Visvesvaraya Technological University premises the protesters shouted slogans and blocked the Belagavi-Goa road near VTU. Within a few minutes, hundreds of people gathered and marched from Santi Bastawad to Rani Chennamma Circle, a distance of 8 km, shouting slogans like 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'. A tense situation prevailed at Chennamma Circle, and roads leading to the circle were blocked as a precaution. The nearly one-hour protest caused traffic jams on several connecting roads. Two months ago, Santi Bastwad had experienced communal tension after a Hindu girl eloped with a Muslim youth on February 22. The girl's mother had filed a kidnapping case, but it came to light later that the girl had eloped willingly.

Private engineering colleges charging exorbitant fees for BBA and BCA courses, in violation of VTU order, allege students and parents

Despite Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) guidelines capping the fees for Bachelors in Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelors in Computer Applications (BCA) offered in engineering colleges, parents and students have alleged that many colleges have been charging several times beyond the prescribed fee cap. While VTU has capped the fees for these courses at private engineering colleges at ₹50,000, several private engineering colleges are charging as high as ₹2.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh for these courses. Many have pointed out that this is much higher than fees fixed for government quota engineering seats in private colleges, fixed at ₹1.7 lakh for 2024-25. Earlier, engineering colleges were not allowed to offer BBA and BCA courses. But the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) permitted engineering colleges with good infrastructure including buildings, teaching staff and other resources to offer these courses from 2024-25. Since admissions to these courses are not done through the Common Entrance Test (CET), many colleges are taking students through college-level exams. Following complaints of the unregulated fee structure for these courses at private engineering colleges, VTU, to which all engineering colleges in the State are affiliated, issued two orders over the past week capping the fee for these courses. As per these orders, the annual registration and other fees have been capped at ₹5,020, and tuition fees for Karnataka and non-Karnataka students capped at ₹45,000 and the same capped at ₹50,000 for foreign nationals and Non Residential Indian (NRI) students. 'I have decided to admit my son for a BCA course in a prestigious engineering college in the city. He has also scored good marks in the internal examination conducted by the college. However, the college has prescribed a fee of ₹2.5 lakh, which is outrageous. If you question the high fee, the management is asking us to go elsewhere,' complained Venkatesh, a parent from Bengaluru. 'An engineering college working under a prestigious private university is asking students to pay ₹2.3 lakh for a BBA course this year. Private engineering colleges are charging more fees for BBA and BCA courses than engineering courses. The government should bring fee regulation to degree courses as well. This will help poor and meritorious students,' urged Shashank N., a student from Bengaluru.
