Ashadhi Ekadashi festivities to unfold over weekend
Mumbai: Little schoolboys and girls dressed in dhoti-kurta and nine yard saris with garlands of tulsi leaves made a pretty picture as they led processions dressed as Lord Vitthal and his consort Rukmini along the streets of Dadar on Friday.
The Maharashtrian festival of Ashadhi Ekadashi is scheduled Sunday July 6. Celebrations began at Navami Friday with palkhi processions across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. Vitthal temples across Sion, Wadala, Bandra, Andheri, Kandivli, Dahisar and Borivli are planning elaborate festivities. The main ceremony in Pandharpur where the CM usually officiates with his wife, will be telecast live on Doordarshan Sahyadri at 2.00 am on the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday.
The city's dabbawallahs, many of whom belong to the Warkari clan, are heading for the annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur and will not deliver tiffins Monday July 7, said union leader Subhash Talekar.

Devotees of all social backgrounds arrive at the Deshastha Dongrikar Namdev Shimpi Mandal's Vithal-Rakhumai temple at 6th Lane Khetwadi in Girgaum. At Marathi Chawl near Malwani Gate no. 8, Malad, the local shrine will start the day with kakad aarti at 7.00 am followed by a three-hour long 'dindi' and bhajans by evening, said president Mangesh Kachrekar.
In Borivli East, the Vitthal Rakhumai Seva Mandal is conducting a five-day event from July 4-10, said organiser Aniket Kadam.
"On Friday, which was Navami, we held a 'dindi' procession at 5.00 pm. At Saturday's Dashami, we will conduct mahapuja from 5.30-7.00 am. Vaibhav Maharaj Kadam from Virar will perform kirtan from 8.00-10.00 pm. Sunday's main celebration stats with mahapuja in the morning followed by bhajans.
Two 'palkhi' ceremonies will take place. In the evening there is bhajan by women's groups, Haripath seva and kirtan. Festivities will continue till July 10 Guru Purnima."
A grand celebration will unfold at Dahisar Sri Kashi Math from 6.00 am to 12.00 midnight. Convenor Amit Pai said, "Our Vittal Rakhumai Mandir is known as Prati Pandharpur because the idol of Vittal Rakhumai was presented to our seer Shrimad Sudhindra Thirtha Swamiji by the authorities of Pandharpur temple. Around 24,000 devotees including Warkaris visit this day. The deities are adorned with a silver armour and colourful flowers.
