Cops claim deceased youth had no links with Karchhana violence
1 2 Prayagraj: The Prayagraj police Wednesday clarified that the 25-year-old youth, who died at SRN Hospital late Tuesday night, had nothing to do with Karchhana violence and police actions. The police were forced to issue a statement after a group of unknown people had uploaded a video on social media alleging that Sunil, a resident of Singhpur Khurd, died at SRN hospital due to police highhandedness after the Sunday's Karchhana violence. DCP (Yamuna Nagar) Vivek Chandra Yadav told TOI: "Police came forward to dispel the rumour regarding the youth's death, who in fact died at SRN Hospital late on Tuesday night due to serious illness. The youth's death had nothing to do with Karchhana violence and police actions." Later, the family members of the deceased also came before the media and stated that Sunil died of a serious illness. The DCP said the family members told police that Sunil went to Meja on June 29 on his e-rickshaw and later came to know that he (sunil) was lying unconscious near Kohdar Road. "He complained about serious abdominal pain when family members rushed to the spot. Sunil was later taken to a local hospital for treatment. He had no injury marks. On June 30, he again complained of abdominal pain and was taken to SRN Hospital by the family members, but he died late Tuesday night. The body has been sent for postmortem," the DCP said. Cops have warned of legal action against those who circulated the fake news on social media. Violence had erupted in Karchhana on Sunday when supporters of Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad went on a rampage for over two hours, damaging about a dozen vehicles and pelting police with stones. They accused police of not allowing the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) chief to meet the family of a Dalit man allegedly burnt to death in Karchana and that of a 'rape survivor' in the nearby Kaushambi district.

Ten Hindu pilgrims killed in highway crash on way to Maha Kumbh festival
At least 10 people were killed after a car carrying Hindu pilgrims to the Maha Kumbh festival collided with a bus in the north India state of Uttar Pradesh. Nineteen people were also injured in the accident, which took place on the highway from Mirzapur to Prayagraj at around 2am on Saturday. The victims were on their way to Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the holiest Hindu festivals that is held once every 12 years in Prayagraj city, at the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers. Police said the car driver likely dozed off, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the bus. The car was carrying pilgrims from central Chattisgarh state's Korba city to take a 'holy bath' at the Kumbh while the bus was ferrying devotees from Madhya Pradesh's Rajgarh. The bodies were sent to nearby Swaroop Rani Nehru Medical Hospital for postmortem examinations, additional superintendent of police Vivek Chandra Yadav said. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath said he had instructed local officials to reach the site of the crash and provide relief to the pilgrims. He also asked authorities to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured. Indian president Droupadi Murmu expressed condolences to the families of the victims. "The news of the death of many people in a road accident on Mirzapur highway in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is extremely sad," she said on X. The accident was just the latest involving pilgrims to Maha Kumbh Mela, the largest religious gathering in the world that attracts millions of people over the course of several weeks. Last month, at least 30 people were killed and dozens injured in a crowd crush at the festival. Nearly 500 million people were expected to take a 'holy dip' at Sangam, the confluence of holy rivers in Prayagraj, during the festival, according to Uttar Pradesh's state government.
