President Xi: China, Russia find right path of state-to-state interactions

He made the remarks in a written statement upon his arrival in Moscow for a state visit to the country and attendance at the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War. Xi noted that the two sides, as good neighbours that cannot be moved away, true friends who share weal and woe, and good partners of mutual achievement, have forged a spirit of strategic coordination for a new era, which features permanent good-neighbourly friendship, comprehensive strategic coordination and mutually beneficial cooperation. The independent, mature and resilient bilateral relationship, Xi said, not only brings great benefits to the two peoples, but also makes important contributions to maintaining global strategic stability and promoting an equal and orderly multipolar world. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, he noted. China and Russia, both major countries of the world and permanent members of the UN Security Council, will join hands to safeguard the victorious outcome of World War II, firmly safeguard the UN-centered international system and the international order underpinned by international law, resolutely oppose hegemonism and power politics, practice true multilateralism, and promote the building of a more just and equitable global governance system, Xi said. The Chinese president also said that during the visit he will have in-depth communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin on bilateral relations, practical cooperation as well as major international and regional issues of common concern, which will inject strong impetus into the development of the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era. Noting that he will attend Russia's May 9th Victory Day celebrations again after a decade, Xi said he looks forward to working with leaders of other countries and the Russian people to deeply commemorate the martyrs who heroically sacrificed their lives for the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, and send out a strong voice of the times to safeguard international fairness and justice. Xi's plane was escorted by Russian Air Force aircraft after it entered the country's airspace. Muscat: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik arrived in the Russian Federation this evening for a two-day state visit. An official reception ceremony was held for His Majesty the Sultan at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow. His Majesty the Sultan was received at the plane's steps by Maxim Reshetnikov, Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, officials from the Russian Federation, and members of the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Moscow. His Majesty the Sultan inspected the Guard of Honor, then proceeded to the podium, where the Omani Royal Anthem and the Russian National Anthem were played. An official reception ceremony will be held for His Majesty the Sultan on Tuesday at the Kremlin in the Russian capital, Moscow, during which he will meet with President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders will hold official talks. His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik visits the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Alexander Garden in the Red Square in Moscow. US citizen detained in Russia over cannabis-laced marmalade
(NewsNation) — A United States citizen was detained earlier this month at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow for carrying cannabis marmalade in his luggage, according to Russian state media outlet TASS. A statement to TASS from the Russian Federal Customs Service says the citizen, who was not named, arrived from Istanbul on Feb. 7. During customs control, a law enforcement dog sniffed his suitcase, and officers inspected it. They discovered two plastic jars and one pack with gummies, which had cannabinoids in them, a chemical analysis showed, according to the Russian Federal Customs Service. The cannabis had been prescribed by a doctor, the man said. He was taken into custody and now faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of a million rubles, or about $11,000. In a statement to NewsNation, a State Department spokesperson said the agency is aware of reports of a United States citizen detained in Russia. 'In all cases when a U.S. citizen is arrested abroad, the Department monitors the case closely and provides consular assistance,' the spokesperson said. The U.S. citizen's arrest comes on the heels of the release of American Marc Fogel, who had also been detained by Russia. Fogel, a teacher, has been sentenced to 14 years in a Russian prison for possession of medical marijuana. A Trump administration official confirmed to NewsNation on Wednesday that the United States is releasing Alexander Vinnik as part of the exchange. Vinnik is a Russian national who used to operate BTC-e, one of the world's largest virtual currency exchanges, until it was shut down in 2017. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering last year. Last year, retired U.S. Marine Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich were released into U.S. custody after spending 16 months and more than 5 1/2 years, respectively, in Russia. WNBA player Brittney Griner is another American formerly in a Russian prison. She was detained in February 2022 at a Moscow airport after a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis.
