KOTA KINABALU (Aug 3): A wave of nostalgia will sweep through Sabah as 70 senior citizens from across Malaysia take the stage for the Voice in the Shadows – Our Concert, a Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese singing competition celebrating veteran performers. The event will be held on August 17 at the Putera Ballroom in Bukit Padang, with a 4D stage setup to recreate a mini concert experience. A preliminary round will take place on August 16 to select the finalists. Organising chairperson Datuk Eliza Goh said during a press conference that participants hail from Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia. Adding star power to the event is veteran Malaysian songstress Irene Tan, a former Astro talent, who will be launching her fourth album titled One Seed. The album symbolises her effort to plant a seed for the competition to grow in Sabah. 'One of the goals is to promote tourism in Sabah, especially to senior citizens from Kuala Lumpur who have never been here,' said Eliza. 'We'll also be showcasing Sabah's beautiful tourist destinations to our guests.' The event also aims to foster closer interaction between participants from Sabah, West Malaysia and Sarawak. Notably, several businessmen — including a Musang King plantation owner — are expected to attend. Eliza shared that proceeds from the sale of 40 to 50 banquet tables will go toward helping Primary Six students who have excelled academically continue their education at private independent schools. 'All profits will support underprivileged pupils and will be managed by the Kian Kok Alumni Association,' she added. Also present at the press conference were co-organiser Dato' Tan Seng Huat and Irene Tan. The event is expected to be officiated by Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew.

Senior singing competition to promote entertainment tourism
Published on: Friday, June 13, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 13, 2025 By: Wu Vui Tek Text Size: Eliza (fifth, right) and Irene (centre) with the organising committee members. Kota Kinabalu: Over 100 people will descend here to compete in a senior citizen solo singing competition dubbed 'Voice in the Shadows – Our Concert'. 'Although this is a small event, I believe it has a big impact on the tourism industry,' said main organising chairperson Datuk Eliza Goh during a press conference at a hotel here. Advertisement She said such a competition could be developed into an entertainment tourism product to promote Sabah. 'We try to promote tourism in many ways, including through the music video of the songs, which will be released throughout Malaysia and can be viewed overseas,' said Eliza. The competition, which is open to Malaysians aged 40 and above, aims to foster friendship among those who love to sing from Sabah, Sarawak and the Peninsula, she said. 'We want to attract people from this 40-and-above age group to explore Sabah, as many still do not know much about the state,' she said. 'We want them to see that Sabah is actually quite modern now, and we have a lot of products to offer them,' she added. 'So as a Sabahan, I would like to do this as a contribution to the state in helping the tourism ministry attract more visitors.' She added that the competition also has the potential to boost domestic tourist arrivals, as the state cannot rely solely on international travellers. The competition will feature 50 singers, each bringing along supporters – about 50 in total – who are expected to take the opportunity to explore the state's tourist attractions. Co-organiser and Malaysian songbird Irene Tan said the event will be held on August 16 (preliminary round), followed by the finals on August 17 at the Putera Theatre Ballroom in Bukit Padang here. 'The competitors can select their own songs in one of three languages: Mandarin, Cantonese, or Hokkien,' she said. Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew is expected to officiate the concert. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
