BorgWarner secures turbocharger contract with East Asian carmaker for hybrid SUVs

BorgWarner has signed a new contract with a major East Asian original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to supply turbochargers for its 1.6-litre engine platform used in hybrid electric SUV models. The programme marks a continuation of an 18-year relationship between the two companies. The agreement covers the supply of wastegate turbocharger systems designed for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) applications. These systems are intended to improve fuel efficiency, acceleration, and drivability in the customer's upcoming SUV models. 'This award underscores our commitment to delivering high-performance, efficient turbocharging solutions that support the customer's ambitious HEV growth strategy,' said Volker Weng, Vice President, BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, Turbos and Thermal Technologies. 'Our advanced wastegate turbocharger technology is a key enabler of fuel economy and driving performance, and we are proud to continue our trusted partnership,' he added. Focus on thermal durability and local production The wastegate turbocharger system includes a robust actuator and refined valve design that enables precise boost control under varying engine loads and driving conditions. It is built to withstand high thermal loads, a common requirement in hybrid duty cycles, and aims to reduce friction and thermal losses for improved overall efficiency and lower emissions. Production will commence in 2027 at BorgWarner's Pyongtaek facility in Korea, aligning with the OEM's localisation strategy and ensuring supply chain efficiency for the regional market.

BorgWarner wins turbocharger contracts for global OEM's compact and hybrid vehicles

BorgWarner has secured two major turbocharger supply contracts with a global original equipment manufacturer (OEM), expanding its market share in both Europe and North America. The deals mark a significant step forward in BorgWarner's long-term commitment to supporting combustion and hybrid engine platforms, even as other suppliers pivot away from internal combustion technologies. Under the first contract, BorgWarner will supply its cost-effective and durable wastegate turbochargers for 1.0-litre gasoline engines to be used in next-generation compact and light commercial vehicles in Europe. Production is scheduled to commence in August 2027. The second contract covers a high-performance turbocharger program for 3.0-litre gasoline hybrid engines, targeting the North American market. Deliveries under this deal are slated to begin in September 2028. 'This award underscores our ability to win in highly contested markets by offering reliable, cost-effective solutions and long-term supply commitments,' said Dr. Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, Turbos and Thermal Technologies. Manufacturing for the new turbochargers will take place at BorgWarner's facilities in Rzeszów, Poland, and Ramos, Mexico, aligning with the company's emphasis on localisation and operational excellence.

BorgWarner expands dual-clutch programmes in China

BorgWarner has announced two new contracts, reinforcing its presence in China's dual-clutch transmission (DCT) market. The company has secured a seven-year extension for its DCT clutch assembly with a German automotive manufacturer operating in China. This follows more than ten years of collaboration between the two companies. The components, produced at BorgWarner's facility in Tianjin, are used in vehicles with internal combustion engines and mild hybrid systems. The design offers improved performance through reduced rotational inertia and lower friction losses, contributing to greater transmission efficiency and smoother operation. BorgWarner vice president and Drivetrain and Morse Systems president and general manager Isabelle McKenzie said: 'Our success in securing new projects in the Chinese market underscores BorgWarner's commitment to delivering innovative solutions in the region. We are dedicated to helping our customers grow their business in China and succeed in international markets.' In addition to the contract extension, BorgWarner has entered into a new supply agreement with a Chinese transmission manufacturer. Under the deal, BorgWarner will provide DCT clutch modules for a Chinese automaker's SUVs and sedans destined for domestic and export markets. Production will take place at the company's Taicang facility, with mass production expected to begin by the end of 2025. The modules are designed to meet varied driving conditions and are noted for their compact design, thermal durability, and cost efficiency. Earlier this year, in February, BorgWarner also announced extended supply contracts with a major North American automaker for wastegate turbochargers. BorgWarner vice-president and turbos and thermal technologies president and general manager Volker Weng said: 'BorgWarner has a longstanding and trusted relationship with this OEM, having supplied them with our turbochargers for more than 10 years. 'These platform extensions are a testament to the strong collaboration between our engineering teams and we look forward to continuing our work together through the rest of this decade and beyond.' BorgWarner Obtains High-Voltage Coolant Heater Contract with Global OEM

400V high-voltage coolant heater (HVCH) technology to be used in series of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles HVCH offers flexible and compact design with high thermal power density Marks the company's largest eHeater contract for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in North America AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- BorgWarner, a global product leader in delivering innovative and sustainable mobility solutions, has secured a contract with a major, global OEM to deliver its 400-volt HVCH on a series of the automaker's plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) platforms. This HVCH PHEV deal spans mid-size pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans, and production is expected to begin production in 2027. The deal marks BorgWarner's largest HVCH PHEV award in North America to date based on expected volumes. BorgWarner has secured a contract with a major, global OEM to deliver its 400-volt high-voltage coolant heaters (HVCH) on a series of the automaker's plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) platforms for mid-size pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans. The company's 400V HVCH offers a flexible and compact design enabling it to meet the OEM's distinct vehicle environments without requiring changes to the vehicle platforms. The technology also offers high thermal power density through its unique brazed aluminum fin technology with a power ranging up to 10 kW. The thick-film heating and brazed fins enable optimal heat transfer, improve flow distribution and help to degas and prevent bubble accumulation. "BorgWarner has been collaborating with this global OEM on a variety of projects and is looking forward to furthering our relationship by providing this efficient solution for battery and cabin heating," said Dr. Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, Turbos and Thermal Technologies.
