Vornado Realty Trust VNO recently announced that its 55%-owned joint venture (JV) sold 512 West 22nd Street, a 173,000-square-foot Class A office building, for $205 million. Surprisingly fancy for its price and size, it includes three speed settings, and it's even rechargeable via USB — no more scrounging around for your last set of AAs to power it. Promising review: 'Nice little fan! I hook it up for my toddler when we go for little bike or stroller rides and he really enjoys it. I really like the green color, too.' —KwatkinsPrice: $11.99 (originally $14.99; available in four colors) A cooling towel to keep on hand during the hottest of days, because overheating is the worst. When it's dry, this handy pick wicks sweat and moisture away quickly; dampen it with some water, though, and it'll actually help cool you down quicker. Promising review: 'It cools and it's cool! Bought this for my husband who is a truck driver for a concrete company. His A/C went out during the brutal summer heat so I bought this to help keep him cool until they fixed his air. It worked as described.' —Tatooed mamaPrice: $10 A shaved ice maker, so you can have an icy treat whenever you want (as long as you remember to keep your ice cube tray full). This neat-o little machine makes snow cones, slushies, and even frozen drinks in minutes: Just pop in your ice cubes and let 'er rip. You can finish off your little pile of fluffy, frozen fun with whatever flavoring or syrup you like. Promising review: 'Summer fun! Got this for my grandkids for something to do with their friends. This cute gadget makes a mug-sized serving with each batch. Who knew making ice cream (or sorbet, or gelato, or whatever your icy little heart desires!) at home could be so easy? Promising review: 'Easy treat without taking up all the space in the freezer! I've been using this to make frozen yogurt — just add a little pudding mix and milk to Greek yogurt and churn for 15–20 minutes. So easy and a nice treat. I have a large ice cream maker and never use it because it takes up so much space in the freezer; I can never justify using it. This is not for people who want to make ice cream for a family, and it's not advertised as such. It's just a nice little treat maker and works great at that. I just wish I could buy a second cup since they take 24 hours to freeze and I don't want a second motor.' —Kay Price: $21.99+ (available in two colors) A stick of anti-friction balm that'll stop heat-fueled chafing in its tracks. Just apply a little of this soothing balm wherever you tend to experience discomfort — your thighs, your neck, the backs of your ankles or heels, you name it — and it'll help everything, y'know, glide instead of stick. Promising review: 'This worked well in Disney, with long days, lots of walking, and humid weather. Although I had to reapply once or twice, this seemed to work well against thigh chafing.' —Danielle535 Price: $9.99 An insulated drink tumbler capable of keeping your beverages cold for hours. Hydration is key, especially when it's blistering hot out… but no one likes to drink tepid water that's been getting warmer as each minute ticks by. With this double-walled pick from Simple Modern, though, you can make sure your beverages stay icy until the very last drop. Problem solved! Promising review: 'Great purchase! This tumbler is amazing! After 24 hours, I still had ice in my tumbler, and the water was ice cold. I love the pretty colors it comes in. Definitely worth getting. I love the fact that it's dishwasher-safe. Put it in the dishwasher and it came out perfect!' —SuesuePrice: $29.99+ (available in nine colors) Or a can cooler so versatile, it'll work for almost all your picnic, poolside, or beach blanket faves — no matter what size or shape the can or bottle actually is. Thanks to the flexible design of this stainless-steel piece of insulated magic, it can adapt to fit regular cans, slim cans, and bottles — or you can even use it as an insulated tumbler all on its own. No more gross, warm sodas for you! Price: $13.19 (originally $14.99) AND a pair of lidded ice cube trays, because, I mean, what's a cold, refreshing beverage without a couple of chilly cubes clinking around inside it? These trays from Oxo include lids to prevent spillage — but the real magic trick is this: The trays and lids are designed in such a way that you can release only the cubes you need at any given time, keeping the rest safely in the tray for a later drink. Promising review: 'Literally a perfectly designed ice cube tray. The ice cubes release so easily, unlike my last one. Plus, if they get a little stuck, you can run them under water for a moment and they pop right out. Didn't know I needed it 'til I got it!' —Random ReviewerPrice: $10.99 for a pack of two A pair of pull-on gauze trousers for those times when you need to look put-together, but absolutely CANNOT handle anything tight, constricting, or sweat-inducing. Loose, lightweight wardrobe options are a must for summer — and these high-rise, wide-leg pants fit the casual-cool bill in more ways than one. Promising review: 'These fit like a dream: Waist hits just right and the length is great for me at 5'6'. I've had one for a few months and just purchased two more (black). Machine wash and dry low and they look great still.' —Marnor Price: $30 (available in women's sizes XS–4X and in four colors) Or a seersucker mini dress, because when it's really hot out, you do NOT want ANYTHING on your legs. AT ALL. In the immortal words of Emperor Kuzco, "no touchy." That's what this absolutely adorable pick is for: It's lightweight, it's breathable, and — key point! — it lets your gams run free, literally and figuratively. Promising review: 'Carefree LBD for summer! Bought this on a whim wanting a new LBD for summer, fit perfectly, has pockets, adjustable straps to adjust how much of the girls you want to show, perfect length without showing too much thigh. Great price and a piece I'll be wearing for a few summers to come. Love the textured fabric too, easy to steam and wear.' —MsAnonymous Price: $30 (available in women's sizes XS–4X and in two colors) A packable floppy straw hat as chic as it is practical. Promising review: 'Was skeptical to buy at first because I thought it's just water in a can, but upon using it, I found it leaves my face feeling and looking TOTALLY different than it does with tap water. It's so soothing and refreshing! I like to use it as a toner. Because my skin and I love this so much, I'll continue to repurchase it. The price is worth it to me.' —Courtney Price: $13.99 A handy window shade or two for your car, so you can keep your vehicle's interior cool even if it's baking in the sun all day. This magnetic shade stretches to fit most passenger windows — even in SUVs! — keeping both harmful UV rays and unbearable blasts of heat out. Promising review: 'Worth it! I got this after reading a few reviews, and it is worth it! It depends on what kind of vehicle/windows you have, but I was able to make mine fit pretty well on a Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has little tabs on it so you can adjust it smaller or bigger on your window. I folded in a couple of the magnets to make it a little smaller as well. You do need to have exposed metal to be able to make it stick the best, and the magnets are quite strong. I never had a problem opening and closing my door with the magnets in place. We like being able to put the window down on nice days while having the shade still on. We also like being able to move it to a different window or vehicle in a pinch if needed!' —JPete13Price: $18.99 per shade A set of moisture-wicking bed sheets that'll help you stay comfortable while you snooze in the summer heat. Designed to pull moisture away from your skin, these lightweight, microfiber sheets can work wonders when it comes to making sure you're not constantly waking up in a pool of your own sweat (yuck). Promising review: 'I'm a hot sleeper and I hate waking up in soaked sheets. These somehow keep me cool while having a pleasant weight to them. They feel expensive. So far, they're holding up to washing well. I just purchased a second set because I find myself washing the ones I have constantly, just so I can use them again! The ivory color is genuinely ivory too, not too yellow.' —Target reviewerPrice: $27.99+ (available in sizes twin–California king and three colors) And a cooling duvet insert for those of us who NEED the weight of a blanket to sleep comfortably, but who also run stupidly hot at the best of times, let alone during the warmer months. (Hi, hello, it's me, I'm talking about me, although possibly also you, too, fellow oh-no-I-am-a-furnace-when-I-sleep friends.) This down-alternative pick from Target's Threshold line has a wacky cooling pouch inside that really, really helps pull heat away from the body, making for an ideal sleeping environment all summer long. Promising review: 'Feels amazing. 100% cool to the touch. Ties on each corner to fasten to the duvet cover. Highly recommend.' —Gigi Price: $65+ (available in sizes full/queen–king/California king) AND a cool-touch memory foam pillow so your noggin won't overheat in the middle of the night, either. Bonus: It's designed for all sleep styles, so whether you're a flat-on-your-back sleeper or a curled-up-in-the-fetal-position one, it'll give you all the support you need. Promising review: 'My heaven-sent pillow! Love how it keeps my body aligned. I usually have a problem with pillows making me hot. This one is perfect and I am not hot. So far, two nights of great sleep without waking up! My arms and hands were falling asleep and waking me up with numbness. No more numbness or waking up!' —Oldendorf Price: $30+ (available in two sizes) A surprisingly classy inflatable fountain pool, because who says kiddie pools have to be, well, only for the kiddies? This pretty pearlescent pool is legit big enough for two adults to sit in. And those built-in fountain jets at the back? *Chef's kiss* Promising review: 'Super cute and just enough for all ages! Not too big or too small. Great for chills on a sweaty hot day. Super easy to install and disassemble. Doesn't take all day to get the water reasonably warm! Love the MINNIDIP brand.' —TargetloverPrice: $39.99 (originally $49.99) An impossibly cute patio umbrella that'll provide both shade and style for your outdoor spaces. This outdoor 'brelly boasts a crank-lift system for easy raising and lowering of the canopy. And if the sun moves while you lounge? Not a problem — it also tilts, so you can adjust the angle of the shade as needed to account for the shifting light. Don't forget to grab yourself an umbrella base while you're at it — you'll need one to get this set up. Promising review: 'The perfect backyard umbrella! Sturdy, great quality umbrella. It tilts to the sides with the latch under the umbrella, which is an added bonus! Big coverage, very stable and such a nice neutral color! We love it in our backyard!!!' —jnbeasley Price: $90 A hard-sided 14-can cooler perfect for picnicking, beach-going, or just those long and lazy lounging-outside-on-your-patio-with-your-friends-because-why-the-heck-not days. It might not be fancy, but it's still just darling — and nothing beats being able to reach into a fun cooler to grab your icy cold beverage of your choice hour after hour on those long, hot summer days, am I right? Promising review: 'Great! Love this little cooler! It's lightweight and ice stays frozen for hours even in the 95-degree weather at the beach!' —LyndziePrice: $10 (available in three colors) An ice roller, because nothing beats the heat like a blast of cold applied directly to your way-too-warm skin. Keep this stainless steel roller in the freezer and it'll always be ready to help cool you down — or depuff your eyes, or soothe bug bites, or solve any number of other summer ills. Promising review: 'Own one and gifted two! Months of triple-digit temps here in the West Valley of Arizona are wicked. No, make that brutal. Nothing feels cooler or more refreshing on your face than a skincare roller — right out of the freezer! EcoTools has a beautiful line of budget-friendly skincare tools. This ice roller makes a nice gift for folks who wish to improve their lymphatic drainage. Helps your skincare products to absorb better, as well.' —MelaniePrice: $11.99 And a cooling gel bead eye mask for those times when it's too hot to do anything but lie down in a quiet room with the lights off. Just keep it stashed in the freezer, and it'll be all ready to help cool you down when you've overdone it in the sun a little bit. Bonus: It's great for allergies, dry eyes, and a variety of other ailments, too — and you can use it heated, if you need something to warm you up or soothe your face in the colder months, too. Love a good review: 'Great eye coverage! This eye mask provides full coverage for the eyes and is simply the best when left in the freezer and used in the morning for puffy eyes. It also provides great eye relief when suffering from allergies. I use mine every day.' —LJMNPrice: $8.79 And lastly, a Keurig Hyper Chiller that'll turn hot coffee into iced coffee in a mere 60 seconds. The 7 Best Fans To Keep Any Room Cool And Comfortable
A good fan should make your space feel better the moment you turn it on. But plenty of models simply move air without actually cooling things down, often because of weak motors or limited airflow. The best fans do much more: They circulate air throughout the entire room, run quietly enough for sleep or work and include useful features like adjustable speeds, oscillation and timers. Our top pick, the Vornado 630 Medium Air Circulator, moves a surprisingly strong volume of air with minimal noise, making it especially ideal for bedrooms and home offices. The best fans help cool down any space quickly and efficiently. Illustration: Forbes / Image: Retailers In addition to strong airflow and low noise, it's important to choose a fan that's built to last. As Gerrit Jan Reinders, CEO of climate systems company Reinders Corporation, puts it: 'Never buy a fan just because it's the cheapest. Cheap fans are loud, break quickly and don't move much air." In fact, he warns, "you'll end up buying two or three cheap fans instead of one good one." To help you find a fan that's actually worth it (and right for your space), we spoke to experts about the features that matter most, including quiet operation, reliable performance and thoughtful design. If you need something powerful for a bigger room, consider the adjustable-height Dreo PolyFan 704S pedestal fan; for bedrooms or smaller areas, the sleek Dreo Smart Tower Fan is a quiet, space-saving option. Ahead, find all of the best fans on the market to help keep your space comfortable. Dimensions: 8.6 x 12 x 13.6 inches | Number of speeds: 3 | Timer: No | Remote: No | Oscillation range: Multi-directional tilt (no oscillation) What you'll love: Effectively circulates air across an entire room Easy-to-adjust tilt directs airflow precisely Simple three-speed manual controls Easy to clean due to removable grill Keep in mind: Doesn't include a remote or timer No automatic oscillation This compact model uses what Vornado calls 'Vortex circulation' to efficiently move air around the whole room, instead of just blowing it in one direction. Experts consistently point to airflow as the single most important factor when choosing a fan; Reinders notes that a fan's ability to effectively move air doesn't depend on how big the blades are, but rather on how well they're designed and positioned. With steeply pitched blades and an inlet guide cone, this Vornado model creates strong and focused airflow that quickly evens out temperature and makes stuffy rooms comfortable almost immediately. The adjustable tilt head also lets you direct airflow exactly where you want it, whether toward your desk or across a warm living room. While this fan is powerful, it's definitely not whisper quiet, especially at the highest speed. On low, the sound is fine for sleeping, but you'll still hear noticeable white noise. If you prefer total silence, this fan isn't ideal. But if you don't mind ambient fan noise, it's steady and smooth, without any rattling or mechanical hum. It's also helpful that this fan has a removable front grill, because dust inevitably builds up on the blades over time. Instead of taking the whole fan apart, you can just pop the grill off and easily wipe the blades clean. I've had mine for years and it's noticeably sturdy; nothing has loosened or broken, and it stays perfectly stable even after running all night. Dimensions: 8.94 x 6.3 x 10.91 inches | Number of speeds: 3 | Timer: No | Remote: No | Oscillation range: No oscillation; pivots 90 degrees What you'll love: Fan head pivots 90 degrees Easily mounts on a wall Quiet compared to similar models Keep in mind: No oscillation feature Smaller size limits airflow range The Honeywell Turbo Force fan is small but surprisingly strong. It pushes a noticeable breeze several feet out and the fan head pivots vertically up to 90 degrees, which helps direct airflow exactly where you need it most. While there's no oscillation feature, mounting the fan on a wall lets you position it higher for better air circulation in tight spaces. Even though it's inexpensive, this fan doesn't feel cheaply made. It has a lightweight build, but the plastic casing is sturdy rather than flimsy. Honeywell says it's about 25% quieter than comparable compact fans, but that doesn't mean it's silent; on higher speeds, you can expect noticeable, steady fan noise. If typical white noise from a fan doesn't bother you, it works well in bedrooms, home offices or other smaller spaces. Dimensions: 10.5 x 13.7 x 17.6 inches | Number of speeds: 3 | Timer: No | Remote: No | Oscillation range: Yes | What you'll love: Elegant, vintage-style Art Deco design Sturdy die-cast metal construction Oscillation and tilt adjustment for better airflow Keep in mind: Heavier than typical table fans Pricier due to premium materials and design Most fans aren't attractive; usually they're just something you tolerate because you'd rather not be hot. The Silver Swan is an exception. With its vintage-inspired Art Deco curves and sturdy metal construction, this is a fan you'll actually want visible in your room. It circulates air just as effectively as other powerful fans from Vornado, with three speed settings, tilt adjustment and smooth oscillation. It also feels noticeably solid when you pick it up, thanks to the all-metal build, and it won't wobble or vibrate even on higher speeds. But the real upgrade here is aesthetic: Instead of hiding it behind a plant or in a corner, you can keep this one out as part of your decor. Dimensions: 12.8 x 12.8 x 42.5 inches | Number of speeds: 12 | CFM: 1,475 | Timer: 1 to 12 hours | Remote: Yes | Oscillation range: 30 to 120 degrees | Noise range: 25 to 48 decibels What you'll love: Smart controls via app, Alexa or Google Assistant Wide, customizable oscillation angles Ultra-quiet operation on lower settings Removable rear grill for easy cleaning Keep in mind: Higher price point App is easier to use than the remote The Dreo Pilot Max S tower fan connects to the Dreo app, Alexa or Google Assistant, so you can control it without getting up from the couch. It produces strong airflow at speeds up to 27 feet per second, which is enough to cool off even a larger bedroom or living area. There are 12 speed settings to give you much finer control compared to typical fans that have only two or three. Or, if you'd rather not adjust settings yourself, the auto mode senses the room temperature and adapts the fan speed accordingly. It's especially quiet at lower speeds. At the lowest setting, the Pilot Max S runs around 25 decibels, quiet enough for comfortable sleep or work calls. To clean dust from the blades, the back grill pops off easily, so you don't have to take apart the whole fan. Dimensions: 8.7 x 13.7 x 43 inches | Number of speeds: 9 | Timer: Up to 12 hours | Remote: Yes | Oscillation range: 150 degrees horizontal, 120 degrees vertical | Noise range: As low as 25 decibels What you'll love: Oscillates horizontally and vertically Adjustable pedestal height Smart controls via app, Alexa or Google Assistant Energy-efficient and quiet DC motor Keep in mind: Higher price than basic pedestal fans Primarily plastic construction This Dreo pedestal fan lets you get highly specific with airflow direction and strength. It offers nine different speeds and oscillates horizontally and vertically, which helps move air evenly throughout the entire room. The DC-powered motor is quiet and energy efficient; at the lowest speed, it runs at just 25 decibels, which is quieter than typical whisper-level noise. It also adjusts in height from about 38 to 43 inches, so it's easier to position for better coverage in larger spaces or rooms with high furniture. You can control this fan in several ways: using the included remote, the Dreo app, or voice commands through Alexa or Google Assistant. There's also a built-in timer that lets you schedule when it turns off, which is helpful if you use it overnight. Cleaning the fan is simple, too, since the grille and blades detach easily rather than requiring you to take apart the entire unit. Dimensions: 5.6 x 20.6 x 21.3 inches | Number of speeds: 3 | Timer: No | Remote: No | Oscillation range: None | Noise range: Around 40 decibels What you'll love: Lightweight and portable Simple three-speed control Safety grill protects blades Keep in mind: Noticeably louder than other fan types No oscillation feature The Pelonis 3-Speed Box Fan is exactly what you'd expect from a classic box-style fan. It's lightweight, easy to carry and fits neatly on a windowsill or tabletop. The dial control offers three simple speed settings, without extra features or complicated controls. And while this fan isn't quiet, the sound it makes is a steady and predictable white noise rather than rattling or buzzing. The protective safety grill covers the blades to prevent accidents, and the durable plastic housing can survive daily bumps or knocks. Because it's light and compact, this Pelonis model works especially well in garages, workshops or any space where you need extra airflow without delicate parts or extra maintenance. Dimensions: 5.7 x 26 x 7.2 inches | Number of speeds: 4 | CFM: 1,315 | Timer: No | Remote: Yes | Oscillation range: None (reversible intake/exhaust) | Noise range: Around 45 decibels What you'll love: Slim design doesn't block window views Switches easily between intake and exhaust Auto temperature control adjusts fan speed Keep in mind: Only fits windows between 26 to 40 inches wide Must be installed horizontally The Vornado Transom window fan has a slim, low-profile shape that fits neatly into your window without blocking the view or drawing too much attention. You can easily switch between intake mode, which draws fresh air indoors, and exhaust mode, which pushes stale air outside. There are four different speeds, plus automatic temperature control that adjusts airflow based on the room's temperature. This fan is easy to install, as long as your window measures between 26 and 40 inches wide; foam blocks help create a secure fit and seal out drafts or gaps. It also includes a remote control so you can adjust settings from across the room. If you live somewhere mild and don't always need air conditioning, this model helps circulate fresh air comfortably. Airflow Good airflow is essential if you want your fan to noticeably cool down your space. Reinders notes that blade design is key: "Blades angled at 12 to 15 degrees push air much better than flat blades," he explains. He also emphasizes motor quality, pointing out that "CFM (cubic feet per minute) is what really matters," and suggests aiming for "at least 1,000 CFM for small rooms and 3,000+ CFM for bigger spaces." Our top overall pick, the Vornado 630, uses steeply pitched blades and focused airflow technology, providing powerful, even circulation throughout the room. Noise Level If you're sensitive to noise or plan to use your fan in a bedroom or office, decibel rating matters. Geno Caccia, CEO of Caccia Homes & Services, recommends "looking for decibel ratings under 50 dB for nighttime or office use." Brushless DC motors also run quieter, making them ideal for spaces where noise matters. Both the Dreo PolyFan 704S pedestal fan and Dreo Pilot Max S tower fan operate around 25 decibels on lower settings, quieter than typical whisper-level noise, making them great choices if you plan to use them while sleeping or working. Convenient Settings Fans with multiple speed settings, oscillation and smart controls are simply easier and more convenient to use. Tim Alagushov, co-founder of IRBIS Air, Plumbing & Electrical, notes that "oscillation is really helpful because it spreads air around the whole room instead of just one spot," and he also recommends looking for features like remote control or app integration for convenience. Our best tower fan pick, the Dreo Pilot Max S, includes customizable oscillation angles, 12 speed settings and app connectivity, letting you control airflow without repeatedly getting up to adjust it.
