Czech government launches 72-hour survival guide to aid unprepared citizens
PRAGUE – Most Czechs are not prepared for emergencies, lacking essential supplies, Interior Minister Vít Rakušan said on Thursday while launching a new emergency preparedness guide.
'We know that 73% of the population is not preparing for crisis situations. They don't have any emergency supplies or other essentials ready,' Rakušan said.
The data comes from a public survey commissioned by the interior ministry. While 97% of citizens trust firefighters, 76% trust the police, and 74% trust the army to help in emergencies, many also want to know how to take care of themselves, the study found.
The new guide, titled '72 Hours', offers practical advice for the first three days of an emergency and covers situations such as floods, fires, or outages of basic services.
It follows the EU's Preparedness Union strategy from March 2025, which encourages member states to promote self-sufficiency for at least 72 hours. The Czech initiative also draws inspiration from Nordic countries like Sweden and Finland, where similar guidelines are provided to households.
The guide is already available online, and printed copies will be distributed to every household in mid-October.
