The New Bentley Bentayga Speed V-8 Outpunches the W-12
It's been nearly a year since Bentley assembled its final W-12 engine , concluding more than 20 years of producing twelve-cylinder cars. Although the venerable powertrain is gone, the Volkswagen Group's ultra-luxury brand is confident its replacement is better. I mean, they weren't going to say it's worse, right? The new Bentayga Speed replaces the old 6.0-liter unit with a significantly smaller 4.0-liter engine, still featuring a twin-turbo setup. The latest Bentayga Speed packs 641 horsepower, or 15 hp more than the now-defunct W-12. However, the downsized engine generates "only" 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque, which is 37 lb-ft (50 Nm) less than the previous model. It's still not the most potent SUV out there, considering the Aston Martin DBX S, Ferrari Purosangue , Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat, Lamborghini Urus SE, and Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid are all part of the 700-hp club. A few EVs are even more powerful. Photo by: Bentley As you can imagine, removing the chunky engine has had a positive impact on the SUV's curb weight. It now weighs 5,435 pounds (2,465 kilograms), making it approximately 95 pounds (43 kilograms) lighter than before. The engine transplant puts the 'Speed' in Bentayga Speed , cutting the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration time by half a second to 3.4 seconds. Bentley claims the posh family hauler reaches 193 mph (310 km/h), three mph faster than the old W-12. Beyond the improved spec sheet, the updated model should feel a bit more agile, thanks to the addition of rear-wheel steering. Carbon-ceramic brakes are optional, but only if the vehicle is ordered with the massive 23-inch Speed wheels. Bentley also tweaked the Sport driving mode, stiffening the suspension dampers by 15% compared to the Bentayga V8 S. The steering response has been quickened for a more engaging drive. Bentley believes you won't miss the W-12's soundtrack too much, as the new Speed features a standard sports exhaust system. For an even meaner noise, buyers can splurge on the optional Akrapovič titanium exhaust with quad tips instead of just two. 2026 Bentley Bentayga Speed 19 Source: Bentley Styling changes are discreet. In addition to the 23-inch alloys mentioned earlier, the Bentayga Speed gets darker headlights and taillights, along with an optional contrasting black roof available in either satin or gloss finish. Inside, the standard chrome accents can be replaced with a dark tint to enhance the sporty vibe. Rounding out the updates are subtle changes to the seat upholstery colors and quilted design. Even without the W-12, you're not 'losing an iota of what makes a Bentley, a Bentley." Those extra four cylinders were cut due to stricter emissions regulations. For the same reasons, time is running out for the pure ICE experience in a model from Crewe. The Bentayga is the sole-surviving gas model as the other members of the lineup are hybrid. The upcoming addition to the portfolio will skip the combustion engine altogether by becoming the company's first EV . It'll take the shape of an SUV smaller than the Bentayga. Bentley Bentayga Speed returns with even more power and 193mph top speed
The Bentley Bentayga Speed held the title as the world's fastest SUV for a while, thanks to its legendary W12 engine catapulting it to 190mph. Now the car is back – with V8 power. Bentley stopped building W12-equipped cars last year with the new Ultra Performance Hybrid powertrain acting as a replacement. The Bentayga Speed, however, gets a 641bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 without plug-in assistance – making it less powerful than the 771bhp Ultra Performance Hybrid and the recently-announced 671bhp High Performance Hybrid. Still, that's more than the old 6.0-litre W12 Bentayga Speed produced (626bhp), and while there's 50Nm less torque, the new V8-powered Bentayga Speed shrugs off the 0-62mph sprint 0.4 seconds quicker, taking just 3.4 seconds. The top speed has increased to 193mph as well. It's not only faster in a straight line, either. With the old model, we always felt the V8 S was the sweeter option for keen drivers thanks to its slightly more favourable kerbweight, and with the new Speed, Bentley has implemented several changes to give it the dynamism the name suggests. Advertisement - Article continues below Alongside the Comfort and Bentley driving modes which are unchanged from other Bentayga models, the Sport mode has been recalibrated for the Speed. It creates more responsive steering, helped by 15 per cent stiffer damping and brake torque vectoring, which is aimed at giving the Speed more agility in bends, too. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below There's also four-wheel steering, a new launch control function and a new ESC Dynamic mode to allow for 'exhilarating drift angles where appropriate', according to Bentley. With the Speed's supercar levels of power and near 2.5-tonne kerbweight, we'd imagine most buyers will specify the optional carbon ceramic brakes, which can be painted in no fewer than seven different colours. They sit behind a set of optional 23-inch wheels bespoke for the Speed, with 22-inch rims reserved for the steel brake set-up. Helping the Speed look distinct to the rest of the Bentley range is the black roof, finished in either gloss or satin. There's also a rear spoiler and dark-tinted exterior trim, with chrome Speed badging on the doors and unique headlights up front. Inside, you'll find the usual suite of Bentley extravagance full of diamond-quilted stitching and chrome, although the Speed also gets a unique driver's display with extra information on the car's performance set-up, Speed badging on the seats and the option of green accents – just like the exterior. Pricing for the Bentayga Speed hasn't been announced yet, but we expect it to cost more than the old W12 model, possibly sitting over the £250,000 mark. Check Offers If the already available V6 hybrid and powerful V8 powertrains are not enough, Bentley is ready to unleash more for its Bentayga SUV. The British luxury car maker is working on another Bentayga, and it promises to be even more potent than the previous W12 model. The carmaker has teased the new Bentley Bentayga ahead of its June 2 unveiling. While Bentley is keeping most of the juicy details a secret, the small teaser video released by the company on its official social media channel reveals the exhaust note. Bentley also claimed that it is going to be the most powerful Bentayga ever, which clearly indicates that the upcoming model will have a V8 engine churning out more power than the previous 12-cylinder Speed model. There will be a standard sports exhaust and even a new Sport calibration with a drift mode. Also Read : Upcoming cars in India The luxury auto company also claimed that this new Bentayga will be faster and more agile than any Bentley SUV before it, as well as the most emotional and engaging Bentayga to date. For reference, the Bentayga W12 churn out 592 bhp peak power and could race to 0-100 kmph in four seconds flat before it was discontinued last year. The new V8 hybrid powertrain of the automaker is capable of pumping out nearly 730 bhp peak power and offers up to 80 kilometres of pure electric range. In May 2024, Bentley said that this new hybrid powertrain would define the future of the auto company. Hence, expect the same engine to be under the hood of the upcoming Bentley Bentayga that is slated to break cover on June 2. As Bentley has taken pledge to become a more niche brand with focus on more performance and luxury, the new Bentayga is expected to play a crucial role in that strategy. Bentley Batur Convertible Makes Global Debut in Dubai
Bentley Motors has officially revealed the all-new Bentley Batur Convertible, making its global debut at an exclusive unveiling event hosted at Bab Al Shams Resort in Dubai, UAE. Designed by Mulliner, Bentley's bespoke division, this extraordinary open-top grand tourer marks the third bespoke commission in Bentley's modern coachbuilding era. Crafted as a significant evolution in the marque's design philosophy, the Batur Convertible delivers a luxurious open-air driving experience inspired by the dramatic landscapes of Batur. With just a handful to be produced, it joins the ultra-exclusive ranks of its predecessors—the Bacalar and Batur Coupé, both of which were instant sellouts. Under the hood lies a defining chapter in Bentley's engineering legacy: the final and most powerful iteration of its legendary W12 engine. This 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged masterpiece produces an astonishing 750 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque. Paired with refined intake systems, larger turbochargers, and enhanced intercoolers, this hand-built engine represents the peak of Bentley's powertrain innovation. As production of the W12 concludes this summer, the Batur Convertible becomes one of the last vehicles to carry this iconic motor—solidifying its status as a collector's treasure. Striking Design, Inside and Out Currently displayed in Dubai, the Batur Convertible features a bold exterior finished in Midnight Emerald, enhanced by high-gloss carbon fiber details. A standout front grille—framed in dark titanium and color-graded from gloss Mandarin to gloss Beluga—brings a striking dynamic to the face of the vehicle. Completing the look is the signature Batur Racing Stripe in Gloss Porpoise with Gloss Mandarin accents, which tie seamlessly into the Mandarin-highlighted cabin. Inside, the cabin mirrors the opulence of the exterior, showcasing Cumbrian Green and Porpoise leather, subtly contrasted by Mandarin stitching and piping. Mulliner's meticulous attention to detail is evident in elements like brushed titanium bull's-eye vents and organ stops, as well as a unique instrument panel adorned with a laser-etched W12 soundwave signature. The dashboard itself boasts a refined gradient that transitions from Gloss Beluga to High Gloss Carbon Fiber and back again. Modern Coachbuilding Meets Bentley Heritage Bentley's heritage of crafting convertibles dates back to 1919, and the Batur Convertible proudly continues that lineage. Inspired by the Bacalar's design language and performance DNA, this new model is engineered as a two-seat grand tourer that combines open-top freedom with the exclusivity of coachbuilt luxury. Thanks to advanced structural engineering, the Batur Convertible achieves both beauty and strength—offering a smooth, powerful driving experience while retaining a distinctive silhouette. Mulliner's expertise enabled them to blend design cues from both the Bacalar and Batur Coupé while introducing a new level of versatility through its convertible roof configuration. Bespoke to the Last Detail Every Batur Convertible will be a singular creation, shaped to reflect the unique tastes of its owner. Bentley invites each customer to collaborate directly with Mulliner's design team, choosing from a near-limitless array of customization options, including fully bespoke exterior paint finishes, rare materials, and even hand-painted detailing. Customers can personalize everything from the grille's gradient effect to the dashboard finishes. Premium materials such as titanium, high-gloss carbon, and hand-polished metals can be combined to create one-of-a-kind visual combinations. For those seeking the ultimate in exclusivity, select interior components—including the Bentley Drive Mode Selector and iconic Organ Stop vents—can be finished in solid 3D-printed rose gold. These elements are crafted in collaboration with master goldsmiths from Birmingham's historic Jewellery Quarter, merging artisanal heritage with cutting-edge automotive luxury. The rose gold finish can also extend to the steering wheel's center mark, adding yet another layer of bespoke refinement. A Final Chapter for an Iconic Engine The Batur Convertible is not only a statement of handcrafted artistry, but also a mechanical swan song for Bentley's W12 engine. This 750 hp powertrain has defined Bentley performance for over two decades, and with 40% more power and 25% better fuel efficiency than when it first launched, it remains a testament to relentless development and engineering brilliance. Each unit will be built by hand over several months at Mulliner's dedicated workshop within Bentley's carbon-neutral factory in Crewe, England—ensuring the highest levels of craftsmanship and exclusivity.

London school pupils handed detentions for lateness after TfL change bus routes
A north-east London school stopped giving out detentions to late pupils using public transport after realising changes to bus frequencies were impacting how quickly they could get to class. Students at Woodbridge High School in Woodford Green have complained they were being unfairly punished for lateness due to the buses they take not being reliable. Last year, Transport for London (TfL) reduced the frequency of the W14 from three buses an hour to one an hour, while the W12 had a route change, now diverting away from Walthamstow village. Deputy headteacher Jeremy Clifton has now taken action by writing an open letter seen by TfL telling of how the changes to bus frequencies have negatively impacted his students, the London Standard reports. He said that 'buses are frequently delayed and not running to the published times' and that 'late buses mean that we have 30–50 students waiting for long periods at stops'. Mr Clifton said the buses arrived at the end of the school day too full to pick up more passengers. 'I've witnessed buses just driving straight past, not stopping to pick up kids, literally one behind the other at some times,' Mr Clifton told the publication. He added in the open letter obtained by the Standard that the long wait times mean students end up walking home or battling to get onto the bus, 'raising safety concerns as students panic and push to get on the bus, not wanting to be left behind'. Mr Clifton explains he along with other teachers will often help students board the bus at the end of the day, trying to encourage more students to move down the vehicle, which some avoid out of worry they will miss their stop. He also flags that this is particularly concerning during the dark winter months, when 'personal safety can be compromised' by not being able to use the bus. The services affect students both leaving and arriving at school. The letter also states that the detentions for being late 'impacts our relationship with students as they complain about the bus service and say that we are not being fair by punishing them.' The 2,000-student school now no longer gives out detentions for lateness due to public transport as this has been judged as no longer in the student's control, the news outlet reports. Mr Clifton added that elderly and disabled people have also been affected: 'Without a good bus service, you become detached from your community.' Mr Clifton has called upon TfL to create a dedicated end-of-school service for students and wrote in the letter: 'I strongly urge TfL to reconsider introducing the new buses and to restore the W12 and W14 routes to the previous arrangement, or, at the very least, design a more effective route for each service.' Geoff Hobbs, TfL's director of public transport service planning, told The Independent: 'In September, we made changes to the local bus network that increase service by 10 per cent and took account of previous requests for better access to Whipps Cross hospital. 'The bus changes to W12, W13 and W14 mean these routes now run more frequently to major hubs, making it easier to travel in and around the area. 'Many users on route W12 have seen frequencies doubled and W13 passengers can travel to Leyton without changing. On the new route W14, passengers have a higher frequency at the northern end of the route as well as an evening and Sunday frequency for the first time. '26,500 more people now live within one bus journey of Whipps Cross hospital. Electric buses are being phased in as they arrive from manufacturers.' 'We continue to engage with the local community and have met local residents and their representatives. Our focus now is to improve the reliability of these routes." The Independent has contacted Woodbridge High School for further comment.
