Indian youngsters bag handful of medals
Kolkata: Indian chess looks to be in good hands as the country's youngsters shone brightly at different world age-group meets this week. While India clinched seven including three gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the World Cadet Chess Cup that concluded in Batumi, Georgia, they ended the Asian Junior and Girls meet in Kalutara, Sri Lanka, with a haul of six medals across classical, rapid and blitz formats in open and girls sections. India got a new World champion when Sarbartho Mani won gold in the U-10 open section in Batumi. India swept the category as Oishik Mondal and Kapil Aarit came second and third respectively. It has been a phenomenal rise for Mani who had previously won gold in Commonwealth and Asian age-group chess too. Mani (1847) recently played alongside his idol Viswanathan Anand, Anna Muzychuk and others to win bronze in rapid for Team Freedom at the World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships in London. The Kolkata boy drew both his classical games against Mondal (1857) in Stage 2 and then went on to win the next two rapid games (15'+2") each to top the podium while Mondal settled for silver. CM Aarit Kapil (2078), who recently came close to defeating world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen before settling for a draw in the 'Early Titled Tuesday' online chess tournament, defeated Iman Nabiyev (Kaz, 1716) twice to bag the bronze medal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure your family's future! Northern Hemisphere Heatwave Underscores Value Of Early-Warning Alerts
1 July 2025 Three days after Spain's national weather service confirmed a record 46°C reading in the southern town of El Granado, there's been little let-up in stifling day and night temperatures across the continent and beyond. In Barcelona, a road sweeper reportedly died on Saturday after completing her shift, prompting an investigation and widespread public appeals to keep out of the sun wherever possible. 'Everybody is at risk,' insisted Clare Nullis, spokesperson for the World Meteorological Organization (WMO): 'If you go out without water in the middle of the day, to do jogging, have a bike ride, you will probably have health problems or even die.' Fossil fuel factor If part of the reason for Europe's heat misery is because it is in the grip of a strong high-pressure weather front trapping hot air from northern Africa, Ms. Nullis noted that 'human-induced climate change' is the source of these acute weather events. Another part of the climate puzzle is that sea surface temperatures in the Mediterranean are exceptionally high for this time of year. 'It's the equivalent of a land heatwave', the WMO spokesperson said. 'Extreme heat creeps up on you,' she added, while dangerously warm conditions are becoming 'more frequent, more intense' because of global warming caused by burning fossil fuels. ' It's something we have to learn to live with,' Ms. Nullis maintained, highlighting the importance of early warnings from national meteorological and hydrological services to prevent more deaths from extreme heat events – which are often 'under-reflected' in official statistics. Hot days – and nights According to the UN agency, night-time minimum temperatures and daytime maximum temperatures broke monthly station records for June in parts of Western and Southwestern Europe, partly explaining why the heatwave is so draining. ' The frequency and intensity of extreme heat events is increasing in Europe and by 2050 about half the European population may be exposed to high or very high risk of heat stress during summer,' Ms. Nullis explained. 'What is exceptional - and I would stress exceptional but not unprecedented - is the time of year. We are 1 July, and we are seeing episodes of extreme heat which normally we would see later on.' WMO insisted that warnings from national weather services and coordinated heat-health action plans are increasingly important to protect public safety and wellbeing. The UN agency is promoting these efforts through its Early Warnings for All platform. A key component is the WMO Coordination Mechanism (WCM) which supports crisis-prone and conflict-affected regions with advice. WMO curates authoritative weather, climate and water information from countries such as its WCM Global Hydromet Weekly Scan.

Head of local weather warnings takes early retirement as NOAA cuts continue
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Paul Yura, the warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio office, has announced he has taken the early retirement offer as part of NOAA's recent cuts to personnel and budget. Yura has over 32 years experience, spending more than half of his career at the NWS Austin/San Antonio office. In the process, he gained tremendous experience understanding local weather patterns while ensuring timely warnings get disseminated to the public in a multitude of ways. The warning coordination meteorologist (WCM) is a senior role at a local NWS office. According to NOAA, 'The WCM coordinates the warning function of the office with the outside world. This would include heading the Skywarn Program, conducting spotter training and being a voice to the local media for the office.' Only the 'meteorologist in charge' (MIC) has a higher position within a local office. Yura's retirement is part of an early retirement package offered to National Weather Service employees as the Trump Administration works to slash the budget at NWS and the larger NOAA organization. In an e-mailed message to media partners, Yura said, 'I cannot have asked for a more rewarding career that has spanned over 32 years, with over half of that career right here in South Central Texas as the WCM for the NWS Austin-San Antonio office. And while I am sad that it is ending a few years earlier than I had planned, the friendships and relationships that I have made while being your WCM cannot be replaced.' As for a replacement to the WCM, the current hiring freeze, as mentioned by Yura in his message, may make filling that role more challenging. This comes less than a week after several Regional Climate Center's across the county had their funding 'lapse' with no certainty of it returning. Funding 'lapse' cuts Southern Regional Climate Center at Texas A&M The importance of experience in the WCM role cannot be understated. Ensuring ample and timely warning to the Central Texas counties covered by NWS Austin/San Antonio is among the chief responsibilities. Yura's final date of employment, April 30, comes just before severe weather season in Central Texas typically peaks in the month of May. According to the NWS Austin/San Antonio website, the office is already short two meteorologist positions currently listed as vacant. The positions of 'lead meteorologist' and 'meteorologist' remain open. Separately, NWS Austin/San Antonio have a vacant 'electronics technician' position. In addition to Yura, Science Operations Officer Jon Zeitler is also retiring on April 30, but it is not an early retirement as part of NOAA personnel cuts. Zeitler has worked at NWS Austin/San Antonio for the past two decades and across all types of impactful severe weather and winter weather events in this area. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
