Pope Francis Cardinal Classic Returns to West Springfield
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Pope Francis Cardinal Classic returns to West Springfield for the 16th annual year. Dozens of fans filled the rink at Olympia Ice Center for the 2-day tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday. Annually, the event is held around President's Day Weekend. The tournament included some of the best Division One high school teams in the region. Four high school teams, took part including, Belmont, Pope Francis, Saint Mary High School from Lynn, and Central Catholic High School from Lawrence. Pope Francis played Belmont in the championship game Wednesday and fell 2-0. 'We have just been working on our defense, primarily we're a very offensive-minded team and very good offensively,' says Michael McGrath, Co-Captain of Pope Francis Hockey. The state championship kicks off next Wednesday. Pope Francis is looking forward to a game at home, because of their high ranking.
