Wetherspoons to make huge menu change from today with three items axed

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WETHERSPOONS is shaking up its menu today – and fans of steaks and grills won't be happy. From Wednesday, May 14, the pub giant will be ditching three major dishes – steaks, mixed grills and gammon – in a shock menu overhaul. The move comes as bosses aim to freshen up the food offering and cut back on items branded 'loss-makers' after meat prices shot up. In an email sent to staff, Wetherspoons chief John Huston confirmed that the meats were being ditched 'after much debate', as part of a planned menu change. But in their place comes a 'mouthwatering' new selection, with Wetherspoons confident customers will lap it up. Here's what you can expect from today. What's being axed? From May 14, the following dishes will vanish from menus nationwide: All steaks Mixed grills Gammon The dishes have long been Wetherspoons staples, but have reportedly become too expensive to keep serving. What's new on the menu? In their place, a gourmet burger trio will land on plates across the UK – and it's not your average pub grub. The Big Smoke – Pulled BBQ beef brisket, American-style cheese and maple-cured bacon. Buffalo Burger – Fried buttermilk chicken breast with blue cheese, naga chilli sauce and melted cheese. Cheese Meltdown – American cheese layered with gooey Emmental and Cheddar cheese sauce. Prince William visits a J D Wetherspoons pub Each one will be built around a new 6oz patty, which becomes the new standard burger size going forward. Other Wetherspoons news Spoons also launched a £2.99 breakfast deal in February, with customers able to get a breakfast muffin or small breakfast with soft or hot drink. There are also veggie options available, which is served between 8am and midday. Meanwhile tea and toast, which comes with two slices and either jam or marmalade, is just £2.49. It's not been all good news for Wetherspoons punters in recent months though. The pub chain exclusively revealed to The Sun in January it had increased the price of a host of drinks and meal deals by up to 30p. The chain hiked prices on drinks by 15p while meal deals were bumped up by 30p. The price rises saw the cost of a Guinness at the London and South Western branch in south west London go from £4.66 to £4.81. Meanwhile, the price of a Strongbow increased from £3.24 to £3.39.

Major Wetherspoons menu shake-up to land next week with new US-style gourmet food range

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WETHERSPOONS is preparing for a major shake-up next week with its new "gourmet" menu. The highly anticipated change is set to introduce a selection of US-inspired dishes. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Wetherspoons menus are set to change on May 14 Customers can tuck into a new range of three Gourmet Burgers from May 14, just in time for alfresco dining. Up first is The Big Smoke which includes pulled BBQ beef brisket, American-style cheese and maple-cured bacon. This sweet and salty burger is stacked high and packs a crunch in between two buns. Next up is the Buffalo burger which serves up a fried buttermilk chicken breast, blue cheese and naga chilli sauce and American-style cheese. The crispy chicken dish arrives at your table with a spicy chicken wing skewered onto the top of the burger, giving you an extra snack with your meal. Finally is the Cheese Meltdown which includes American-style cheese smothered with Emmental and Cheddar sauce. Pictures show cheesy sauce dripping down the sides of the burger with the filling stacked on lettuce and tomato. Both The Big Smoke and the Cheese Meltdown come with the choice of a 6oz beef patty or a fried buttermilk chicken breast. All three mouthwatering dishes are served with chips, onion rings and a drink to get that full burger joint experience. If burgers aren't your bag, Wetherspoons is also adding a range of Korean-style chicken meals to the improved menu. The big change is bittersweet though, as bosses have decided to remove major players from the menu. Steaks, mixed grills and gammon will no longer be served at the pub chain. The details are yet to be announced, but a spokesperson said: "Wetherspoon is making changes to its menu in May. "This includes the removal of steaks, mixed grills and gammon on May 14. "A new range of Gourmet Burgers will be introduced; The Big Smoke, Buffalo Burger and Cheese Meltdown, on Wed 14 May. "There will also be a range of Korean-style chicken meals added." Steak, mixed grills and gammon are all set to be scrapped from the menu after being branded the "biggest loss-makers." The spokesperson continued: "Wetherspoon is confident that its menu provides a variety of choices and value-for-money meals. "We appreciate that some customers will be disappointed with the decision to remove steaks and grills." 3 The new menu is expected to be gourmet, but it means three major dishes will be removed Credit: Reuters 3 The US-inspired burgers will come with fries and a drink Credit: JD Wetherspoon

Wetherspoons to open 15 new pubs starting in DAYS – see the list of locations and if one's near you

The pub giant revealed like-for-like sales had jumped 5.6% in the 13 weeks to April 27 this morning. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Wetherspoon currently operates 795 pubs Credit: Getty With two new pubs already unveiled this year - in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, and at London Waterloo station - Spoons has ambitious plans to add up to 15 more, with six locations and opening dates already locked in. First on the list is The Conister Arms in Douglas, Isle of Man, set to open on Wednesday, May 14. Next is Walham Green at Fulham Broadway, South West London, opening on Tuesday, June 17. The Dictum of Kenilworth in Warwickshire will follow, opening on Wednesday, July 30. On Tuesday, August 26, The Sun Wharf on Tooley Street near London Bridge will welcome punters. The King of Essex in Basildon is scheduled to open on Tuesday, September 23. Finally, a new pub in Merchant Square, Paddington, is also set to open later this summer, though the exact date has yet to be confirmed. In the last quarter, Wetherspoons also opened four new franchised pubs in partnership with Haven Holiday Parks. These include The Red Rocks at Devon Cliffs, The Humber Stone at Cleethorpes Beach in Lincolnshire, The London Stone at Kent Coast, and The Sir Thomas Haggerston at Haggerston Castle in Northumberland. Wetherspoons currently operates 795 pubs. Why are so many pubs and bars closing? Full list of new pubs on the way WHETHERSPOONS is gearing up to open pubs in six brand-new locations, with the first set to welcome punters in just a few days. Douglas, Isle of Man - May 14 Fulham, SW London - June 17 Kenilworth, Warwickshire - July 30 Tooley Steet, London Bridge - August 28 Basildon, Essex - September 23 Merchant Square, Paddington - late summer The pub giant is also planning to launch an additional nine pubs over the next financial year. What else is happening at Wetherspoons? Last month, figures from the British Beer and Pub Association revealed that around six pubs permanently closed every week last year, leading to the loss of 4,500 jobs across England and Wales. The trade body reported that 289 pubs called last orders for the final time in 2024, and with rising costs - including higher National Insurance contributions and increases to the minimum wage - more closures are expected this year. It hasn't been all good news for Wetherspoons fans either. While total sales in the most recent quarter rose by a modest 5%, and by 4% for the year so far, Wetherspoons has sold off seven venues during this period. In January, the pub chain told The Sun it had raised the price of some drinks and meal deals by up to 30p. Drinks went up by 15p, while meal deals increased by 30p. However, Wetherspoons confirmed that prices for certain drinks, including all draught lagers like Budweiser, Carling, and Coors, remained unchanged. Despite recent challenges, Wetherspoons has said it expects a "reasonable" full-year result, thanks in part to good weather boosting sales, even as staff costs continue to rise. Chairman Tim Martin said: "The company's main ambition, as always, is to improve its appeal to staff and customers. "In this connection, for example, the company has invested in new staff facilities in 520 pubs (49 in the current year), including staff rooms and changing rooms, with approximately 270 planned for the future. "The investment per pub is approximately £100,000. The product range for customers continues to evolve. "Bearing in mind that recent trading has been helped by favourable weather, the company anticipates a reasonable outcome for the financial year, notwithstanding previously reported wage and tax increases of approximately £1.2million per week."
