WFISD students wins scholarships

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Many Wichita Falls Independent School District students celebrated after the WFISD Foundation handed out scholarships. On Tuesday evening, May 13, students and teachers gathered at the Region 9 Education Center, where 68 scholarships were awarded to students. Forty-one students went home with some extra money towards their college funds. A total of $78,450 was awarded in scholarship funds. WFISD Foundation officials said it's great to have this kind of support for the students. 'We're grateful to have organizations and families supporting our students and investing in their future,' Nikki Davis, Executive Director of WFISD Foundation said. Among those students was Aniyah Bascombe from Memorial High School, who received the Shatanya Clark 'Larger Than Life' scholarship. That scholarship was started after Shatanya Clarke passed away during her battle in 2022. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. MAVA president Jose Villastrigo and Gonzalez' daughter Renae Gonzalez Murphy said it's an honor to see the city remember its veterans. 'It's a tribute to a life well-lived. A legacy of service and a symbol of the values that hold dear faith, perseverance, and community. Dad is proud to call Wichita Falls home. He loved the city, and served it with everything he had as a soldier, as a small business owner, and as a public servant.' Gonzalez-Murphy said. The resolution will now move to TxDOT officials to move forward with putting up the sign. 'He never sought recognition for his service or his sacrifice, but we know this moment would fill his heart with gratitude and pride,' Gonzalez-Murphy said. 'Thank you for persevering, for preserving his memory in a place that represents both his life's work and his lasting impact on the community.' according to Gonzalez Murphy; Gonzalez is the first Purple Heart recipient to be recognized in this way. Olney 6 y.o. starts nonprofit to decorate graves ‘across the world': Help here

OLNEY (KFDX/KJTL) — An Olney girl is hoping to make her mark on the world with her own nonprofit, and she's only 6. Raylee Cawthon started Sorrow to Sunshine in January 2025, and it's already amassing a great community response, according to her mom, Malia. 'I'm keeping it going for a long, long time,' Raylee said. It's been her dream for the past year. Local non-profit receives nice donation through an OBI campaign 'She kind of kept bugging me about it, so finally, we were like, 'Ok, let's do it,'' Malia said. Her mission? 'I'm putting flowers on all the graves that don't have any,' Raylee said. 'She didn't understand why some didn't have flowers, so the ones that don't have family here, or the family's already passed on,' Malia said. Raylee made the decision after visiting her grandmother's grave, which is always overflowing with flowers and decor. For Malia, it makes her proud to see her late mother's love bloom through her young daughter. 'It's really great just seeing her be so generous, and my mom, her Nan, was very generous,' Malia said. 'She always was doing for others, so it's really neat to see her light shine out through her.' 'I feel like my grandma always gets a lot more than others,' Raylee said. The idea she had at age 5 is now a full-blown nonprofit dedicated to spreading her light. 'The first two days of having the Facebook page up and going, we had enough money for PVC pipe, plenty left over for flowers,' Malia said. The 6-year-old… 'She always wants to make other people happy, and being around her is just a joy,' Malia said. 'She's just a happy little girl.' 'I hope it happens because it makes it happen to other places, and it makes it happen all around the world,' Raylee said.
