Several area jails to receive state funding for renovations, improvements
Several area jails will receive state funding for construction and renovation projects, according to a spokesperson from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's office. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] On Friday, DeWine and Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Director Annette Chambers-Smith announced that 19 jails across the state will receive grants totaling about $50 million. The jails in Champaign, Darke, and Logan counties will all receive funding, according to the spokesperson. The Tri-County Jail, located in Champaign County, will receive approximately $46,568 to renovate a space for court hearing video services and a private space for mental health services. The Darke County Jail, which opened in 1983, will get approximately $136,809 to conduct a needs assessment and feasibility study to determine the need for a new jail. The Logan County Jail will receive $549,012 to improve HVAC, mechanical, and plumbing systems. The funding will also help renovate the intake, booking, and medical areas of the building. 'This funding will not only support safer environments for those living and working in our local jails, but it will also help prepare inmates for release by creating improved spaces for workforce development, educational opportunities, and other programming,' DeWine said. Suspect in domestic situation shot after police chase in Ohio; 1 officer injured
A suspect was shot after shooting at law enforcement and then causing a chase in Marysville on Friday morning, according to our news partners, WBNS. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Officers were called to a domestic dispute on White Oak Court around 2:15 a.m. When they got to the scene, they found the suspect and interacted with him. During that interaction, the suspect reportedly pulled out a gun and fired shots at the officers from inside his vehicle, WBNS reported. The officers returned fire, but the suspect then drove off from the scene, hitting multiple vehicles, including a Marysville police cruiser, in the process. He then started going west on U.S. 33, leading to a chase with law enforcement. WBNS reported that the chase ended when the suspect's vehicle stopped in the median while on U.S. 33. The suspect got out of the vehicle with his firearm, and a Union County Sheriff's Office approached him. Shots were fired, and the suspect was hit multiple times. The suspect was taken to a Marysville hospital before being transported to a hospital in Columbus. His condition is unknown at this time. Police confirmed with WBNS that a Marysville officer was injured during the shooting incident at the original scene. That officer was taken to a hospital and was later released. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was contacted to help with the investigation. Police have also confirmed that the suspect is expected to face several felony charges. Unlicensed 15-year-old driver hits police cruiser in Ohio
An unlicensed teen hit a police cruiser while driving their parent's truck in Ohio. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The Whitehall Police Department said an officer was helping someone locked out of their car on April 28 when the cruiser got hit by a 15-year-old driving the truck, according to a social media post. 'Allowing an unlicensed, underage driver on the road puts everyone at risk—other drivers, pedestrians, and the teen themselves,' the department stated. Airport weather equipment not working moments before plane crash that killed Dayton musician
New information has been released about the moments leading up to a San Diego plane crash that killed three people early Thursday, including a local musician. The airport weather alert system and runway lights were not functioning properly at Montgomery Field Airport as the plane approached, the AP reported. A founding member of a popular band from Dayton died in the plane crash. The band, which Williams parted ways with in 2016, posted a tribute to their former drummer on social media Thursday afternoon. 'No words. We owe you everything. Love you forever,' the band posted along with a series of photos of Williams and music agent Dave Shapiro. In a statement obtained by Billboard, the agency confirmed that Shapiro and two other employees died in the crash. As previously reported, the plane crashed into a neighborhood in San Diego early Thursday morning, catching about a dozen homes on fire. San Diego Police have confirmed three people have died and eight people were injured. Police have not released any names of the victims at this time. The Associated Press reported that Shapiro was listed as the owner of the plane and that he had his pilot's license.
