Air India flight carrying 242 passengers crashes near Ahmedabad airport

NEW DELHI -- An Air India flight to London with 242 people on board crashed soon after takeoff in the western city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, the airline and TV channels said on Thursday without giving details about fatalities and injuries. "Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest," an Air India spokesperson posted on X. The post also said that the plane, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members, of whom 169 were Indian nationals, 53 are British, 1 Canadian and 7 Portuguese nationals. The plane crashed near the Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Airport in Ahmedabad in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India's Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said he was "devastated to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad." He posted on X: "We are on highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action. Rescue teams have been mobilized, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families." A local TV quoted the Directorate General of Civil Aviation as saying that the aircraft "made a mayday call just before the crash." Footage on Indian private TV channel, WION, showed the plane flying low before disappearing from view. A ball of fire followed by a thick plume of smoke engulfing the area quickly appeared from where the plane fell out of sight. Some injured being taken to hospital was also shown in separate footage. An airport spokesperson said in a statement that the flight crashed shortly near the airport. As a result, the airport in Ahmedabad "is currently not operational," the spokesperson said. "All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice." "Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates before proceeding to the airport. We request your cooperation and patience as authorities manage this evolving situation," the spokesperson added. Tata Group-owned Air India chairman N. Chandrasekaran mourned the crash. "With profound sorrow I confirm that Air India Flight 171 operating Ahmedabad London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today," he said in a statement posted by Tata Group on X. "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event." The post said that the company was assisting emergency response teams and providing all necessary support and care to those impacted, adding that it had set up an emergency center for families.

Donald Trump displays DRC visual as proof of South African 'genocide'

US President Donald Trump brandished a stack of printed articles at the White House on Wednesday that he claimed documented a genocide taking place against white people in South Africa. Mixed into the deck of papers he unveiled before South African leader Cyril Ramaphosa, however, was a months-old blog post featuring a photo from the Democratic Republic of Congo . 'Death of people, death, death, death, horrible death, death,' Trump said as he flipped through the headlines, which he said were published in 'the last few days.' 'These are all people that recently got killed.' Donald Trump and his allies have spread baseless claims of a 'genocide' targeting white farmers in South Africa, claims that the government in Pretoria has dismissed as false. At the bilateral meeting in the Oval Office on Wednesday, the US president held up a February article about tribalism in Africa from a little-known website called 'American Thinker.' It featured a blown-up image showing Red Cross workers in protective gear handling body bags. 'Look, here's burial sites all over the place,' said Trump. 'These are all white farmers that are being buried.' But the image is a screengrab from a February YouTube video of Red Cross workers responding after women were raped and burned alive during a mass jailbreak in the Congolese city of Goma, according to its caption. The Indian news outlet WION published the video, using footage supplied by Reuters. Overall, about 75 people are murdered every day in South Africa, most of whom are young black men in urban areas, according to police figures. This Country possesses World's Largest Nuclear Bomb, it's 3000 times more powerful than Hiroshima bomb; name is....was made by...

Following the Pahalgam attack, tensions between India and Pakistan have intensified, triggering blackouts and high alerts in several regions across India. On Saturday, India and Pakistan reached an understanding to stop all firings and military actions on land, air and sea with immediate effect. US President Donald Trump on Sunday praised the 'strong and unwaveringly powerful' leadership of India and Pakistan for reaching a ceasefire, saying their legacy is greatly enhanced by their brave actions. Tensions between India and Pakistan soared after the Indian Armed Forces hit terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) last week in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Amid the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, discussions have also emerged around the nuclear capabilities of both nations. But do you know which country possesses the world's most powerful nuclear bomb? Well, the world's largest nuclear bomb, known as the Tsar Bomba, belongs to Russia. As per a WION report, the Tsar Bomba, created by the Soviet Union in 1961, remains the most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated. With an explosive yield of about 50 megatons of TNT, Tsar Bomba is more than 3,000 times stronger than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The Tsar Bomba, initially intended to produce a yield of 100 megatons, had its power cut in half to limit the potential for devastating nuclear fallout. Despite this reduction, the explosion still resulted in a fireball eight kilometers wide and a mushroom cloud that reached a height of more than 60 kilometers, reported WION. If dropped on a major city, the Tsar Bomba could wipe out everything within a 35-kilometre radius, cause third-degree burns as far as 100 kilometres away, and break windows hundreds of kilometres from the explosion's epicentre.

Can Pakistan use highly advanced F-16 against India? If it does than US will...

India Pakistan war: With the commencement of Operation Sindoor by the Indian Armed Forces in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attacks, India has destroyed almost the entire terror infrastructure across the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border. Pakistan retaliated by shelling across the LoC killing many civilians and injuring many. Pakistan also used drones and missiles across Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat but they were intercepted by India. Reports also suggest that two of Pakistan's highly celebrated JF-17 jets were shot down by India adding that Islamabad may have deployed its American F-16 fighter jets. This begs the question: Can Pakistan use America supplied F-16 fighter jets against India? The entire fleet of Pakistan's F-16s has come from the United States, which has placed strict conditions on how these aircraft can be used. These fighter jets were sold under the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme. Every such sale comes with an End-Use Monitoring (EUM) agreement, meaning Pakistan cannot freely use or modify the jets without approval, reports WION. There are also embedded US teams on the ground in Pakistan, part of programmes like Golden Sentry and Blue Lantern, whose job is to ensure American technology is not misused. These teams monitor the deployment of jets and weapons around the clock, says the report further. Hence, as per the arrangements between the USA and Pakistan, the latter is prohibited from using F-16s in conventional warfare unless approved by the US administration. Moreover, these F-16s have been given to Pakistan on the condition that they will be used only in counterterrorism missions and not in direct state-to-state conflict. Hence, it is to be understood that these fighter jets are not meant to be used against India in war-like situations. To recall, US officials had accused Pakistan of breaking its F-16 agreement following the 2019 Balakot air strikes when Pakistan attacked a few sites inside India using these aircraft. If Pakistan does not adhere to the agreement rules and misuses the F-16s again, America reserves the right to cut off support or suspend agreements.

Babil Khan calls idea of starring in Irrfan Khan's biopic ‘scary': ‘He lived that darkness, I am just talking about it'

Babil Khan , son of the late legendary actor Irrfan Khan , has often used his platform to share heartfelt reflections and memories of his father. The young actor, who is currently garnering praise for his performance in the cyber-thriller Logout, recently addressed the idea of portraying his father in a potential biopic. In an interview with WION, Babil admitted that while it would be an honour, the idea of stepping into his father's shoes feels overwhelming at this point in his life. 'I would actually and it would be an honour, but the thought is too scary for me right now. My dada was someone who lived that darkness I was talking about. He actually lived that life. I am just talking about them at the age of 26. He dedicated his entire life to these ideas," Babil said. "This is why he could play all these characters without ever ageing on screen. You could never say how old he was. He could be a hundred years old or 20 years old. He never needed VFX. Hence, he could play a serial killer and a hopeless romantic with such ease.' The Qala actor recently reflected on accusations that he has used his father's legacy to boost his own career. Speaking with The Lallantop, Babil responded to such criticism, saying, 'If that were true, I wouldn't be going to auditions today. I was simply sharing the love because everyone showed us so much love and support.' Babil Khan Drops 'Khan' Surname Babil also recalled the profound shift in his life following Irrfan Khan's passing in 2020. He vividly remembered the day his father's body was transported from the hospital to the funeral. Despite the pandemic, throngs of grieving fans lined the streets, undeterred by the risk of infection, just to bid farewell to the beloved star. That moment, Babil said, made him realise how deeply his father was loved by millions. It inspired him to share his grief, memories, and journey with the public, not for fame, but as a tribute to a man who meant so much to so many.
