Dad of 2 dies after driver fleeing cops slams into his car, Michigan wife says

A father of two driving for Uber was killed when another driver fleeing police crashed into his vehicle, according to his wife. Danielle Habib said her husband, 28-year-old Alex Habib, died after being T-boned by another driver around 3 a.m. July 12 in Warren, according to WXYZ. He was the only person in his vehicle. The driver was being chased by Roseville police officers, the news outlet reported. The chase involved a 16-year-old accused of stealing a vehicle before fleeing from police, according to WJBK. It's unclear the condition of the teenage driver. Roseville police have not publicly commented on the crash. McClatchy News reached out to the department July 14 and is awaiting a response. Danielle Habib criticized the actions by police that led to her husband's death. 'Alex was an innocent bystander. He left behind multiple ... people that loved him and cared about him, and he was, he was innocent, you know ... moving about his day and ... he was killed over, you know, something that could have been avoided,' she told WXYZ. According to a GoFundMe, Alex Habib was considered a 'loving father' to his 1-year-old daughter and 3-month-old son. The fundraiser said 'his life revolved around his family.' He worked multiple jobs to help make ends meet for his family, his father-in-law, Dale Durant, told WDIV. 'Alex worked tirelessly to provide for Danielle and the kids, both emotionally and financially,' according to the GoFundMe. 'He was a man of deep love, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication — someone who gave selflessly and always showed up for the people he loved.' Durant called his son-in-law 'incredible' as he remembered him for his 'kind-hearted demeanor.' 'He was the kind of man you hope your children are surrounded by: a devoted young father, a tireless worker, a steady provider, a loyal golf partner, and above all, a true friend and brother,' Durant said on Facebook. Warren is about a 20-mile drive north from Detroit.

Homeowner fatally shoots teen garage intruder, MI cops say. Will he be charged?

A homeowner in Michigan fatally shot a 17-year-old boy accused of breaking into his garage, authorities say. Two days after the July 8 shooting in White Lake, an investigation into whether the homeowner is justified for his actions is ongoing. White Lake Township Chief of Police Daniel Keller said in a news release the homeowner was alerted through his video surveillance system that seven individuals had broken into his detached garage. He exited his home and fired multiple shots at the accused intruders, who all fled the scene, police said. Officers later learned two 17-year-olds — one at a hospital and one near the hospital — had been shot, Lt. Matthew Ivory said in a news briefing streamed by WDIV. First responders provided lifesaving care to the teens, but one died from their injuries, Ivory said. Police said two arrests were made, including a juvenile who was released to their parents. The second arrested individual, an adult, has 'pending issues with other jurisdictions that he will have to take care of' before being released, Ivory said. The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office will review the police department's findings to determine if the homeowner will be charged. 'It's hard to give advice on that,' Ivory said when asked about homeowners protecting their property. 'You do have the right to protect your life and I just hope it doesn't come to that. We want to be a safe community and we ask that people stay safe. Obviously as soon as you realize something is going on, the faster we know, the faster we can get there.' Will homeowner be charged? What experts say Experts believe the homeowner could face charges, including the possibility of second-degree murder. The Self-Defense Act, also called the Stand Your Ground law, allows someone to use lethal force to defend themselves. The Castle Doctrine, meanwhile, allows a person to protect themselves with lethal force inside their home. Making matters complicated in the White Lake incident, defense attorney Jim Makowski told WXYZ, is that the shooting took place in a detached garage away from the home. 'Now, if you've got a detached garage, that's outside the curtilage of your house,' Makowski told the news outlet. 'It's not attached to your house. If it was an attached garage and someone was breaking in with a doorway into the house, again that's part of the dwelling.' Only the homeowner fired shots in the White Lake shooting, police said. It's unclear if any of the accused intruders were armed. Former police officer Bill Kucyk said the homeowner is not justified in the shooting because there is no evidence suggesting he was physically threatened, according to WJBK. Charlie Langton, WJBK's legal analyst, said the law does not allow someone 'to use deadly force to protect their property.' A charge of second-degree murder is likely, according to Langton, because he confronted the suspects outside his home. White Lake is about a 40-mile drive northwest from Detroit.

Customer fires gun as McDonald's employee stabs co-worker to death, MI cops say

A McDonald's worker is accused of fatally stabbing a fellow employee after an argument, and an armed customer intervened, Michigan police say. The stabbing happened at about 8 a.m. Thursday, July 10, at a McDonald's in the Detroit-area suburb of Eastpointe, police said in a news release. 'There was a dispute between co-workers and one of them was sent home early,' according to police. However, investigators say 'the employee returned a short time later armed with a knife' and attacked the co-worker she had argued with. The victim of the stabbing was a manager at the McDonald's, WDIV reported. A customer waiting at the drive-thru window saw what was happening, pulled out a gun and fired a shot into the air in an attempt to stop the attack, WJBK reported. The woman tried to flee the scene, but the customer caught and detained her until officers arrived, according to police. The employee who was stabbed died at a hospital, police said. The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office will review the case to determine charges, police said.

Woman gets kicked off court Zoom call while making PB&J sandwich, video shows

A woman in Michigan was kicked off a court Zoom call after she was making a sandwich while wearing a robe during her hearing, courtroom video shows. Asja Outerbridge appeared in the 36th District Court before Judge Sean Perkins for a misdemeanor after she was accused of having an open alcohol container as a passenger in a car, WJBK reported. When it was her turn to appear before Judge Perkins, he asked why she was late. She responded saying she received a letter stating her court hearing was scheduled for 1 p.m., but then held up a piece of paper which showed it was scheduled for 9 a.m. 'I got multiple court dates, so I called to get the Zoom number, and they had told me like, 'Oh, you're supposed to be there right now.' What I had said 1 p.m.,' she told CBS News Detroit. 'I hung up with them, and hopped on at 9:22 a.m. exactly, and waited there from 9:22 to 11:30.' During the hearing, Outerbridge was making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, WJBK reported. She can be seen wearing a robe, scooping peanut butter and talking over the judge, video streamed on the court's YouTube page showed. 'We can't speak at the same time. … Put whatever you're trying to prepare down,' Perkins said to her. He also told her to get 'properly dressed.' Outerbridge told the judge she was making a sandwich for her sick daughter and that she had a T-shirt on under her robe. 'I definitely was wrong. I could have came dressed better and more prepared, and I don't want to judge to think that I'm laughing at the situation at him because I'm not. I take that very seriously, I do genuinely, with a serious face, apologize to the judge,' she told CBS News Detroit, adding that she wouldn't have been 'making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.' Within two minutes, the judge kicked Outerbridge off the call. Over two hours later, he brought her back on. During her second appearance, the judge accused Outerbridge of 'rolling her eyes' before setting a trial date for her.
