North Korea replaces senior military officials at party meeting
North Korea has replaced senior military officials, including directors of the armed forces' artillery and security bureau, during a meeting of the ruling party's central military commission, state media reported on Friday. Guided by leader Kim Jong-un, North Korea held the eighth enlarged meeting of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) on Wednesday, Yonhap news agency reported quoting the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The meeting came after a new North Korean warship partly capsized during its launch on May 21, a serious accident that the North's leader witnessed and slammed as an intolerable "criminal act." The commission "newly appointed six commanding officers of corps-level units, the director of the Artillery Bureau and the director of the Security Bureau and newly dispatched some political commissars," the KCNA said, without disclosing other details. North Korea said the meeting discussed ways to more firmly establish the "steel-like discipline system" of the country's armed forces organs and exercise "tight control and guidance" on the military. At the meeting, North Korea decided on "military measures to firmly maintain the strategic and tactical superiority" and approved a series of new projects in the Defence science and industry sectors, without revealing other details. The North's meeting appears to be intended to tighten the military's discipline following the recent warship accident occurring during the launch. Kim ordered the restoration of the warship to be "completed unconditionally" before a plenary meeting of the WPK's meeting set for June. As part of an investigation into the warship accident, North Korea has detained some officials, including the vice director of the party's munitions industry department. Meanwhile, Russia had provided North Korea with its air defence system, electronic warfare jamming devices and other military support since late last year, in blatant violations of UN sanctions amid their deepening ties, an international monitoring report released by Seoul's Foreign Ministry showed on Thursday. Since November 2024, Moscow has transferred at least one Pantsir mobile air defence system and one Pantsir-class combat vehicle to Pyongyang, the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT) said in its first report on the sanctions enforcement. The MSMT was established in October last year with the initiative of South Korea and the United States as an alternative framework to the UN Panel of Experts on North Korean sanctions monitoring.

N. Korea's Kim demotes director of military's general political bureau
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has demoted the director of the military's general political bureau in an apparent sweeping reshuffle of senior military officials following the recent warship accident. The decision came as North Korea held an enlarged meeting of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) on Wednesday, presided over by the North's leader, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Friday. The commission "newly appointed six commanding officers of corps-level units, the director of the Artillery Bureau and the director of the Security Bureau and newly dispatched some political commissars," the KCNA said, without disclosing other details. Jong Kyong-thaek, director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People's Army (KPA), has been demoted to the rank of colonel general from general, Seoul's unification ministry said, citing photos carried by the North's state media. Photos related to a firing contest among military artillery units held Thursday showed Jong with the lower military rank's insignia on his uniform, though he was referred to with the current title of the KPA's director in state media reports. The director of the KPA's general political bureau is in charge of ideological education and surveillance at the armed forces. The commission's enlarged meeting, the first such gathering in August 2023, came after a new North Korean warship partly capsized during its launch on May 21, a serious accident that Kim witnessed and slammed as an intolerable "criminal act." North Korea said the meeting discussed ways to more firmly establish the "steel-like discipline system" of the country's armed forces organs and exercise "tight control and guidance" on the military. At the meeting, North Korea decided on "military measures to firmly maintain the strategic and tactical superiority" and approved a series of new projects in the defense science and industry sectors, without revealing other details. The North's meeting appears to be intended to tighten the military's discipline following the recent warship accident occurring during the launch in the northeastern port city of Chongjin. Kim ordered the restoration of the warship to be "completed unconditionally" before a plenary meeting of the WPK's meeting set for June. As part of an investigation into the warship accident, North Korea has detained some officials, including the vice director of the party's munitions industry department. (Yonhap)

Putin says displaced Kursk residents to return home safely
Moscow: Displaced residents of Russia's Kursk region will be able to return home safely despite ongoing challenges, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said during his visit to the region. The President assured that citizens that have been temporarily displaced following Ukraine's incursion into the region would return home, noting that it is important to ensure security by demining populated areas, local media reported Wednesday, citing the Russian leader during a meeting with local officials. During his work visit on Tuesday, Putin met with representatives from volunteer organisations and held a meeting with acting governor of the Kursk region Alexander Khinshtein, Xinhua news agency reported. The Russian leader also toured the construction site of Kursk-2 Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and met with municipal leaders. The President backed a proposal to extend the special economic zone to the entire Kursk region. He also approved funds to restore damaged homes in the region, and agreed to continue monthly payments to citizens who have been temporarily displaced. "We have shown the whole world ... and primarily ourselves that we are a united people. In times of hardship, this unity becomes especially clear," Putin said. In August 2024, the Ukrainian army launched an offensive into Russia's southern Kursk region. On April 26, Putin announced that Russia had regained full control of the region. Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov, in his last month's report to President Vladimir Putin on regaining control of the Kursk region, had commended the role of North Korean troops in the Kursk campaign. "I want specially to note the participation of servicemen of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ... who in accordance with the Treaty on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between our countries rendered considerable assistance," Gerasimov was quoted as saying by the TASS news agency. On April 28, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) announced that its military operations in Russia's Kursk region "were victoriously concluded," marking the first official confirmation of its miliary involvement. Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and President of the State Affairs of the DPRK, decided to send armed forces to Russia as "the prevailing situation was conformed to the invocation of Article 4 of the treaty on comprehensive strategic partnership" between the two countries, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on April 28, citing a statement from the Central Military Commission of the WPK. The military activities "conducted within the boundary of the Russian Federation fully conform to all the provisions and the spirit of the UN Charter and other international laws," according to the statement.

Kim Jong Un Inspects Major Shipyards to Advance North Korea's Naval Power
H-Tayea North Korean leader Kim Jong Un conducted a high-profile inspection of major shipyards, emphasizing the rapid development of the country's naval force and warship-building capabilities. His visit comes as part of the Workers' Party of Korea's (WPK) long-term strategy to establish North Korea as a dominant maritime power and reinforce its defense capabilities amid growing regional tensions. Accompanied by senior officials, including Jo Chun Ryong, a WPK Central Committee secretary, and Admiral Kim Myong Sik, commander of the Korean People's Army Navy, Kim assessed ongoing efforts to modernize shipyards and accelerate the production of advanced warships. He expressed strong satisfaction with the progress, praising workers for their commitment to strengthening the DPRK's naval force in line with the national defense strategy. During his inspection, Kim underscored the strategic importance of maritime sovereignty, highlighting that both the eastern and western coasts of North Korea are vital to national security. He reaffirmed that the development of a nuclear-armed naval force is an essential part of North Korea's military strategy, aimed at countering threats from hostile forces. He emphasized that a strong navy is crucial for protecting the country's territorial waters, securing economic interests, and deterring foreign military presence in the region. Kim noted that the DPRK is making steady advancements in naval technology, positioning itself to deploy state-of-the-art warships capable of reinforcing national security. He stressed the urgency of building a robust, self-reliant shipbuilding industry, calling for further modernization, scientific innovation, and talent development to enhance warship production. The North Korean leader also outlined a long-term strategic plan for expanding the country's fleet of surface and underwater vessels, including the development of nuclear-powered submarines and strategic guided missile submarines, in accordance with decisions made at the 8th Congress of the WPK. He emphasized that North Korea will not remain idle as enemy forces continue to deploy strategic naval assets near its borders. Instead, the DPRK will bolster its maritime defense capabilities to safeguard its sovereignty and maintain stability on the Korean Peninsula. Kim's visit marks a significant step in North Korea's push to strengthen its naval power. He encouraged shipbuilding industry officials and workers to continue their efforts in constructing a fleet that would serve as a formidable deterrent against foreign military threats. He reaffirmed that North Korea's sea defense capability will be displayed in any necessary waters without limitation, reinforcing the country's stance as a self-reliant military power prepared to defend its interests. His inspection of the warship-building industry signals a new phase in North Korea's naval strategy, aligning with the broader goal of establishing a powerful, modernized maritime force capable of confronting geopolitical challenges and asserting DPRK's defense priorities on the global stage.

Accompanied by senior WPK officials Ri Hi Yong and Kim Jae Ryong, Kim was welcomed by local authorities and construction managers overseeing the project. Kim highlighted its significance, noting that the camp's completion will mark a major achievement in the year celebrating the 80th anniversary of the WPK. In addition to the Onpho Kulloja project, Kim also approved budget allocations and labor organization for the completion of another key development – the Yombunjin Haeyang (Maritime) Hostel in North Hamgyong Province. His visit reaffirmed the North Korean government's focus on modernizing recreational infrastructure, ensuring that citizens benefit from socialist policies aimed at improving health, leisure, and overall quality of life.
