Rockford Rivets jump on Traverse City early and improve to 2-0

LOVES PARK, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The Rockford Rivets are off to a 2-0 start to their Northwoods League season after defeating the Traverse City Pit Spitters 10-3 Tuesday for a two-game series Rivets got their ten runs on only six hits. They struck for six runs in the bottom of the first inning. One of them scoring on a bases loaded walk to Tommy Townsend. Townsend, a native of Sycamore, Illinois, reached base four times. He had one hit and three walks. He scored three baseman Tate Shimao had a pair of hits for the Rivets, and he drove in two pitcher Danny Cercello was more than solid in his Rivets' debut on the mound. He pitched 2.2 innings allowing one hit and one earned run while striking out three Allred did not allow a run in 1.1 innings. STILLMAN VALLEY, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The Byron Tigers made it 28 straight wins Saturday when they defeated Oregon 10-5 in five innings to clinch the 2A Stillman Valley Regional Baseball Tigers banged out 11 hits in the game. Kaden McGough had three hits in four trips to the plate. One was a triple. Caden Considine had two hits, and he also tripled. Andrew Talbert popped another home run. Talbert also came within one hit of another no-hitter on the mound. Talbert went five innings, allowing one hit while striking out nine on his way to a Tigers also stole seven bases, and they did not commit an their record is now 31-4. Former Rockford IceHogs coach Steve Martinson returning to the ECHL's Allen Americans

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Former Rockford IceHogs coach Steve Martinson isn't finished coaching hockey. Not by a long shot. Monday he was named the head coach and general manager of the ECHL's Allen Americans in Allen, will be Martinson's second stint there. The first time around he guided the Americans to four championships. Overall, in his coaching career, Martinson has coached professional teams to ten championships in various leagues. One of those teams was the 2006-07 IceHogs team that won the UHL (United Hockey League) last year, Martinson was inducted into the IceHogs' Ring of Honor. In a statement on the Americans' website Martinson said the following: 'I'm super excited to get to work rebuilding this team. The first thing I will do is tell players to watch the Florida Panthers. If that's your style, you've found your place to play. Fast, skilled, and heavy. If you can't play that way, then Allen is not for you. Everyone knows my style and now we have an owner committed to creating the best environment for players to develop and the team to win. Myles Jack lived the importance of team, culture, and identity. Rockford Christian hires former Boylan standout Bryanna Weiskircher as head volleyball coach

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Rockford Christian has a new girls head volleyball coach. She's well known in Rockford. She is Bryanna Weiskircher, now Branna was a star player at Boylan a decade ago, where she was a two-time NIC-10 MVP. Weiskircher then shined for one of the top NCAA volleyball programs in the nation Penn graduating from Penn State, Weiskircher-Moore played professionally in Germany. She more recently has served as Club Director and Technical Director at VC United and then as coach of the VC United Elite Program. She has coached boys and girls high school volleyball previously in is taking over a Rockford Christian girls volleyball program that will be loaded this fall led by first-team All-State outside hitter Maddie Anspaugh and honorable mention All-State setter Julia Irvin. Rockford Christian will also return several other key players from a team that went 30-5 last year and won the Big Northern Conference Championship for the first time while also winning at 2A regional championship. ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Former Highland Community College men's basketball coach Luke Norman has a new job. He has been named an assistant coach at Moberly Area Community he'll work under head coach Pat smith who has won five national is located in Moberly, Missouri. It's a junior college division one program just as highland lost his job at Highland in Freeport a few weeks ago for insubordination. Administrators said he refused to follow orders following a post-game scuffle between Highland and Kennedy-King College and the fallout from that which included Highland forfeiting multiple games after that a post on his Facebook page Norman stated: 'I am thrilled to announce I will be coaching at Moberly Area Community College next year as an Assistant Coach.
