Subaru teases what could be a new WRX

When the latest Subaru WRX was launched back in 2022, the Japanese automaker said there wouldn't be a high-performance STI version in the current generation. True to its word, the closest Subaru has got to offering a new WRX STI since then is the WRX tS Spec B flagship (pictured below), offering a manual gearbox, Brembo brakes, adaptive dampers and other parts from the brand's STI performance division. Now it has released a teaser image of a new model it will reveal in October, sending Subaru fans into a spin because it has all the hallmarks of either an all-new WRX, or a higher-performance version of the current WRX or Levorg (WRX Sportswagon). Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. While Subaru didn't name the vehicle, a single, intentionally washed-out image published by the brand reveals its front-end styling. Aggressive bodywork can clearly be seen in the teaser image, including a chunky front bumper with low-to-the-ground splitter and side skirts. There's also a trademark WRX central bonnet scoop and, looking further, heavily blistered wheel-arches that suggest larger wheels and bigger brakes. But while other WRX hallmarks – including a turbocharged boxer engine and all-wheel drive – are almost a given, the grille looks more like the previous-generation WRX's or even the Levorg's. Best Car Web reported the automaker said at the announcement – held at Mount Fuji Raceway in Japan – the vehicle shown in the image will be "environmentally friendly" and will usher in "a new generation without losing its Subaru character". Subaru confirmed it's working on a horizontally opposed ('boxer') internal combustion engine which is compatible with 'E20' carbon-neutral fuel. The automaker also said hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the new engine are in development, which suggests the new WRX could be given a hybrid push to meet emissions while offering the capability demanded of a high-performance flagship. Japan currently plans to ban sale of new vehicles powered solely by internal combustion engines (ICE) by 2035 but will permit hybrid vehicles alongside battery-electric models. Part of the core WRX make-up is all-wheel drive, which the automaker said it is also working on for the new model with knowledge gained in motor sport. Subaru competes in the 2025 Super Taikyu Series in Japan as Team SDA Engineering with the intention of developing its road car models, with Subaru employees as its drivers. The vehicle will be unveiled at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show scheduled to start on October 30, 2025. Subaru fans in the Philippines get a WRX wagon with STI gear-for free. Meanwhile, U.S. buyers are still waiting for any sign of an STI comeback.

For years, the Subaru WRX STI has been a symbol of accessible performance – it's a rally car for the streets, packed with turbocharged power, all-wheel drive, and just enough edge to keep purists and tuners excited. More than just a badge, STI has become a cultural icon, wrapped up in car meets, snow-covered backroads, and a healthy dose of WRC nostalgia. And yet, here we are. The WRX STI has been officially gone from US showrooms for quite some time now, with no confirmed return. The legendary EJ engine retired, the six-speed gone quiet. And if you were hoping for a wagon variant to make a comeback, forget it. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, buyers are driving off the lot in brand-new WRX sedans and wagons fitted with STI kits – for free. No, it's not a full STI powertrain. But the upgrades – front and rear spoilers, diffusers, STI-badged shift knob, and rally-style trim – transform the already capable WRX into something that looks the part. It's the closest anyone's come in years to an STI wagon, and it's being handed out as part of a limited-time promo for the first 14 buyers. After that, it will be available as an accessories package for an undisclosed price. This is the kind of car American fans have been asking for since time immemorial. The combination of turbo power, utility, and STI DNA made it a unicorn. Since then, enthusiasts have been left patching together their versions, swapping parts, chasing that perfect blend of speed and practicality that Subaru once offered straight from the factory. And now, just as the STI nameplate goes quiet in the US, it's showing up – at least in spirit – elsewhere, looking sharp and ready to run. What stings isn't just the availability. It's the fact that the STI badge means something. For American fans, it's tied to Subaru's dominance in rally, to the raw, analog feel of a performance car that never needed to shout to be heard. It was the underdog that overachieved. So to see a WRX wagon, dressed in STI gear and rolling out with no extra cost, feels like salt in the wound. Yes, this is jealousy talking, but Subie fans will understand. Subaru built a legacy with the WRX STI. And while the future may be electric and quiet, especially with the Japanese automaker focusing on soft-roaders recently with the new-generation Outback and all-new Trailseeker, it's hard not to look back and miss the days when the sound of a boxer engine and a flash of cherry red trim meant you were driving something special. Jerry Seinfeld Talks about His Love of Certain Subarus

Comedian is well known. Turns out he's also into Subarus. On podcast, he discussed owning a couple of special WRX STI variants, one of which he'd just re-bought. He notes the appeal as being a throwback to a time when cars from different countries felt like they embodied national heritage. If you're an automotive enthusiast, you know that Jerry Seinfeld is really into Porsches. If you're a Seinfeld fan, then you know that Jerry drives Saabs. And also, he really hates it when he reserves a mid-size and you give him the keys to a blue Ford Escort. But in real life, it turns out Jerry Seinfeld is a fan of pancake motors of a different sort. Speaking on 'The Smoking Tire' podcast this week, which is just about to hit its 1000th episode, Seinfeld surprised hosts Matt Farah and Zack Klapman by revealing his surprising affinity for hot Subarus. In fact, it turns out he'd just bought one last week, a WRX STI S209. The S209 is a pretty special car, especially considering that the STI is on hiatus at present, with Subaru offering its fans nothing more hardcore than the WRX tS. When new, the S209, which cost a staggering $65,000, was Subaru's tuning arm pulling out all the stops. Thanks to more boost for the 2.5-liter flat-four, it had a slightly laggy 341 horsepower and was festooned with aerodynamic extras from a huge rear wing to dive planes up front. For a guy who's into vintage 356s and has the wherewithal to buy the '99 911 Classic Club Coupe—a million-dollar one-off Porsche that's the most expensive 996-chassis 911 ever made—a huffed-up boostmobile seems an odd choice. But as Seinfeld explained in the podcast, it's the way Subaru was expressing Japan's character in automotive form with the S209, that brought him back to his first interest in cars in the 1970s. From test-driving an MG Midget to taking delivery of his first car, a 1973 Fiat 128 Sport L, Seinfeld's car history is pretty varied. But then, so were the cars: British cars were faintly tweedy, Italians flamboyant and emotional, Volvos stolid and Swedish. Country by country, cars used to be much more heterogeneous. In the modern sea of crossovers, there's less room for character. But a rally hero with anime aerodynamics and a chunky six-speed transmission? That's straight out of Initial D. Seinfeld told the Smoking Tire that he first bought a STI RA, then the S209, then sold the latter. He missed the S209 so much, he ended up buying it back. It's enough to make you reimagine the episode where George Costanza gets the big fur hat as one where he buys a flat-bill 555 baseball cap instead. Or where Kramer takes up vaping. But if Seinfeld's affinity for special performance versions from Subaru is surprising, it's also hugely relatable. We miss the STI too, Subaru. Can we maybe put in a reservation to get it back? 2007 Subaru WRX STI Limited, Understated Rally Hero on Bring a Trailer

Here's an STI from the era when it was a performance bargain. Modifications are minimal, which is rare for a WRX. As a Limited trim and finished in silver, it's more subtle than the typical STI. Subaru killed off the WRX STI back in 2021, to the lasting grief of many a rally fan. Really though, the car had something of a lingering death, as it had gradually been getting surpassed by the rising tide of performance from the competition. A little over 300 horsepower from a slightly laggy 2.5-liter boxer-four that returns 20 mpg was outdated by the dawn of the 2020s. Things were different back in the early 2000s. This 2007 STI Limited, up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos), is one of 800 sold in the U.S. in that year. It was the final hurrah for the GD-chassis car that brought the STI badge to the U.S. in 2004. Back then, this practical four-door Subaru sedan could go toe to toe with a V-8 Mustang in a straight line, then tear up a snowy day sideways, making its driver feel like Colin McRae. Fond memories indeed. Unfortunately, many of these cars eventually passed to less careful hands and were modified by plenty of would-be Ken Blocks who gymkhana'd their cars into the nearest curb. Attrition levels were as high as the boost levels, and performance Subarus still in factory spec today are the exception rather than the rule. This example is one of those exceptions. With 40K miles on the odometer, it has only a couple of changes from showroom stock, and those are from Subaru's in-house Subaru Performance Team. This car's cat-back exhaust and air intake were dealer-installed accessories that wouldn't have violated the warranty when new. The EJ257 flat-four is specific for the U.S. market (Japanese STIs got a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with around the same power) and in this application made 293 horsepower. Getting that power to the ground in slippery conditions are limited slip front and rear differentials, with a driver-selectable central differential shunting things front to rear. The transmission is a six-speed hatchback STI that followed this generation of STI was a much softer car that felt less driver-oriented. It was a better Impreza in terms of everyman comfort, but less of a rally hero. This 2007 STI offers a much rawer driving experience. It's louder and lighter, with heavier steering and a smaller feel. It's what you want your Subaru rally hero to be like. Being a Limited, there are some pleasant options such as heated leather seats and automatic climate control, but the appeal here is the originality more than luxury. The Limited is also perhaps the most reserved STI variant of its day, with a discreet rear lip spoiler and modest 17-inch wheels. Don't let the subtle looks fool you; it's still a rally hooligan at heart. Listed as number 51 of the 800 made, this STI has the potential to be a future collectible. Even if Subaru starts building the STI again, it's not going to be able to make them like this anymore. The auction ends on March 19.
