Fire danger: Red flag warning extends into parts of metro Atlanta
The fire danger will be especially high across north Georgia on Wednesday as the dry conditions continue. Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan says a red flag warning is in effect for northeast Georgia and most north metro counties until 8 p.m. The rest of metro Atlanta will be under an elevated fire danger risk. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV Weather App for alerts wherever you go] With low humidity, dry vegetation and gusty winds, Monahan says it won't take much for any fires that develop to quickly spread. Monahan says wind gusts up to 25 mph will be possible this afternoon. We're tracking when next round of rain will arrive for some relief, LIVE on Channel 2 Action News. Atlanta pollen count hits 4 digits for first time this year
The first day of spring is here and for proof, look no further than the pollen count. Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan says Thursday's pollen count for Atlanta reached 1,551. It's the first extreme pollen count of the year. Last year, the first extreme pollen count of the season was on March 21. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Tree pollen typically begins to spike during the month of February, with the peak running from the second half of March through late April. Pollen counts during this time, especially in April, are frequently in the extreme range. How does pollen get counted? Certified counters from Atlanta Allergy & Asthma wake up early and physically count the number of pollen particles on a glass slide, which has been outside for 24 hours prior. The pollen level depends on the count. These are the ranges: low (0-14), medium (15-89), high (90-1499) and extremely high (1,500). Study: GA city among top 15 most challenging cities for allergies
A new study from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America identified the top 100 U.S. metro areas where it's challenging to live with seasonal allergies. One Georgia city cracked the top 15, but it's not Atlanta. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The study lists Augusta at No. 12 with a score of 80.37. Atlanta meanwhile came at No. 40 with a score of 73.19. AAFA said it calculated scores using the following factors: tree, grass and weed pollens; allergy medicine use; and the number of allergy specialists. Augusta ranked worse than average in the pollen and medical use categories, but had an average rating for the allergy specialists. Atlanta meanwhile had an average ranking across the board. Tree pollen season typically runs from late February to June. The metro Atlanta area typically sees the most extreme numbers around March or April.
