WAILUKU, Hawaii — A judge denied a request to keep proceedings private in a divorce case for a Hawaii anesthesiologist accused of attempting to kill his wife on a hiking trail. Gerhardt Konig's wife filed for divorce last month after he was indicted on an attempted murder charge . Konig has pleaded not guilty . Prosecutors say he pushed her toward the edge of a cliff, attempted to inject her with a syringe and then bashed her head with a rock while they were hiking in Honolulu in March.

Maui man, 58, dies in 3-car collision in Kihei

A 58-year-old man died Tuesday night after being involved in a multi-vehicle collision on North Kihei Road, according to the Maui Police Department. Police said the collision occurred at about 7 :30 p.m., involving three men and three vehicles. The man who died at the scene was reported to be driving a silver 1998 Honda Civic sedan that crossed double-solid yellow lines while heading westbound on North Kihei Road. He then struck the rear of a 2019 Nissan Frontier pickup truck in the opposite lane, and subsequently collided head-on into the 2012 Toyota Camry sedan behind it. 'As a result of this collision, the operator of the Honda, a 58-year-old Wailuku male, sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to his injuries at the scene, ' said MPD in a news release. 'The victim's identity is currently being withheld pending next of kin notification.' The Nissan driver, a 54-year-old man from Kihai, and the Toyota Camry driver, a 53-year-old man from Kihei, were both taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition for treatment of their injuries. Police said the man who died was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, and that the airbag in the Honda did not deploy. The other two involved in the collision were wearing seat belts, but their airbags did not deploy, either. Police believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors at this time, but the determination of whether drugs were involved is pending. The investigation is ongoing. Police said this was Maui County's 11th traffic fatality this year, compared to five at the same time last year. Maui man, 70, dies after being struck by pickup truck in Kihei

Maui police say a 70-year-old man has died after being struck Monday night by a pickup truck in Kihei. The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. at the intersection of East Lipoa Street and the east entrance of Kupaliki Loop in Kihei, according to the Maui Police Department. Based on a preliminary investigation, MPD said the driver of a pickup truck traveling eastbound on East Lipoa at a high rate of speed struck the man as he was crossing the road and then fled the scene. The man from Maalaea sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene, said MPD in a news release. 'Shortly after the incident, a concerned citizen reported a red 2023 Toyota Tacoma operating recklessly on Maui Veterans Highway, leaving the Kihei area, ' said MPD. 'Officers located the vehicle and contacted the driver, a 42-year-old Wailuku male.' Police arrested the driver on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and collisions involving death. He remains in custody at the Wailuku Police Station. MPD believes speed and alcohol are contributing factors to the collision. Police said this was Maui County's 10th traffic fatality this year, compared to five at the same time last year. (AP Photo/Wally Skalij) Updated [hour]:[minute] [AMPM] [timezone], [monthFull] [day], [year] LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams are moving their minicamp to Maui. The Rams announced their plan Wednesday to hold their mandatory minicamp on Hawaii's second-largest island on June 16-19. The camp will feature two days of on-field workouts at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, with one day open to the public. The Rams will also host a football clinic for local youth teams, and Rams players and staff will join Habitat for Humanity to rebuild four homes in Lahaina , which was largely destroyed by wildfires in 2023. The Rams have a lengthy history of partnerships with the state of Hawaii and its individual islands. They played a preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys in Honolulu in August 2019 before the largest crowd in Aloha Stadium's history, and the team did extensive fundraising for Maui wildfire relief two years ago. The Rams' international ambitions stretch all around the Pacific Rim. They will play the first regular-season game in Australia in 2026 at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the team also was the first to get NFL marketing rights to Japan last year. ___ AP NFL: The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting.
