'Deeply disappointed' Wake Forest reacts to baseball coach uttering slur

'Deeply disappointed' Wake Forest reacts to baseball coach uttering slur This -- and every month -- we strive to support one another and celebrate our peers with love and respect. 🔗: — Wake Forest Demon Deacons (@DemonDeacons) June 1, 2025 There were questions about whether Wake Forest baseball head coach Tom Walter uttered an expletive along with a slur while ESPN cameras were on him during the NCAA tournament loss to Tennessee. Now we have an answer from Walter himself and Wake Forest vice president John Currie, who is also the school's director of athletics. "I am very sorry for the outburst in frustration last night and I recognize the hurt and disappointment it has caused," he wrote. "I have seen the videos and while I do not remember the specific moment clearly, that language doesn't reflect my values or the standards of the program. Regardless, I own the consequences and apologies to the University of Tennessee, to Wake Forest University, and the SEC & ACC" Here's what Currie said: "I am both surprised and deeply disappointed in our head baseball coach Tom Walter for his outburst during last night's baseball game. I feel badly for those most hurt by such words. I spoke with Coach Walter immediately after the game and again this morning to address this incident, which is completely out of character for him and does not meet the standards of Wake Forest Athletics, Wake Forest University or the Atlantic Coast Conference." It's not lost on a lot of folks that it's Pride Month in June, and while this should never, EVER be uttered by anyone in any month of any year, it's even worse when Wake Forest tweeted this earlier in the week: Statements from Vice President & Director of Athletics John Currie & Head Baseball Coach Tom Walter — Wake Forest Demon Deacons (@DemonDeacons) June 3, 2025 Do better.

Cincinnati breaks out to big lead against Wake Forest ace Blake Morningstar in 11-6 win in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Cincinnati jumped on Wake Forest ace Blake Morningstar for eight runs in the first two innings and went on to beat the Demon Deacons 11-6 in the Knoxville Regional on Friday. The Bearcats (33-24), in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 and second time since 1974, will play defending national champion Tennessee or Miami (Ohio) in a winner's game Saturday. Wake Forest (36-21) plays the loser in an elimination game. Cincinnati's Quinton Coats and Derrick Pitts each hit two-run homers in the second inning and Donovan Ford went deep for two more runs in the fifth to make it 10-4. Nathan Taylor allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks in six innings, his eighth start this season that has gone that far, and he struck out seven for Cincinnati. Adam Buczkowski and Michael Conte combined to give up one run on three hits over the last three innings. Morningstar, who entered the game second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 2.71 ERA, was tagged for 10 runs in 4 1/3 innings. He surrendered nine hits and six walks and struck out seven. Freshman Dalton Wentz homered twice, and Marek Houston and Jack Winnay also went deep for the Demon Deacons, who have multiple homers in 47 of their 57 games. ___ AP college sports:

2025 NBA Draft scouting report: Hunter Sallis, G, Wake Forest

Hunter Sallis #23 of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons reacts against the North Carolina Tar Heels during the quarterfinal round of the ACC men's basketball tournament at Spectrum Center on March 13, 2025 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by) For a two-round mock draft and a big board with full scouting reports, check out my NBA Draft Guide. Hunter Sallis, G, Wake Forest Height: 6-5 • Weight: 185 • Class: Senior • Age: 22 Summary: Sallis is a poised, efficient scorer with body control, defensive tenacity, and the passing feel to hint at more upside. If the jumper proves real, he could play a much larger offensive role than his current projection. Advertisement Comparisons: Donte DiVincenzo Strengths Shot creation: Slippery ball-handler who is quick but also knows how to deceive opponents with head and ball fakes. He can decelerate, stop on a dime for pull-ups in the paint, or use half-spins to get to the rim. He always looks like he's in control. At-rim finishing: Gorgeous paint scorer with soft touch from any angle off either foot. He can dunk when given space to elevate, but primarily uses his finesse to score around the rim. Even when facing lengthy defenders he's shown the ability to hang in the air and absorb contact to still score. Passing: Selfless passer who makes decisive decisions with the ball. Coming off handoffs, he'll read the floor then put velocity on the ball to a roller. He loves to throw lobs. He's also so comfortable throwing cross-court bullseye passes. Advertisement Cutting: Active off the ball, showing an awareness to fill space in transition, cut to the basket in the half court, and relocate for open 3s. Defense: Super active on-ball defender who shows good footwork fighting around screens and staying in front of opponents. His strong hand-eye coordination allows him to consistently swipe at balls and contest shots. Concerns Shooting: He made only 33.3% of his 3s in four college seasons. He lacks experience and success shooting off movement, and he has a bit of a slow release. But the flashes are impressive: He made 52.3% of midrange pull-ups this season, per Synergy. Advertisement Strength: Needs to get stronger to improve his defensive floor. As it is, he'll get overpowered by some of the heavier elite athletes in the league. Duke basketball clinches share of ACC regular-season title with record-breaking 18th win

Duke basketball clinches share of ACC regular-season title with record-breaking 18th win Cooper Flagg and the Duke men's basketball team kept their red-hot form going against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Monday night, winning 93-60 for the Blue Devils' seventh straight victory and their fourth in a row by more than 30 points. The Wake Forest win also broke an ACC record as Duke's 18th conference victory of the 2024-25 campaign, the most in a single season in league history, as head coach Jon Scheyer clinched a share of his first regular-season conference title. Granted, the ACC expanded to a 20-game conference schedule just six seasons ago (and couldn't field a full slate in one of those years because of the COVID-19 pandemic), so the sample size at this volume is small. Still, since the league changed his schedule in 2019-20, no member of the conference finished better than 17-3 in league play until this year. The Blue Devils haven't just beaten the rest of the ACC, they've bullied their conference counterparts. Duke has won 12 of its ACC games by at least 20 points and five by at least 30. Through the first 19 league games, Duke has a cumulative scoring margin of +421, a number that averages out to a 22.16-point slant in its favor. Duke would win the conference title outright with a victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday, but midweek losses by the Clemson Tigers (at Boston College on Wednesday) and Louisville Cardinals (vs California on Wednesday) would get the job done early.
