Michael Sheen to star in final run of 'Nye' in Cardiff
The show, which has had sold-out runs in Cardiff and London, will be at the Donald Gordon Theatre from August 22 to August 30, 2025. Tickets are on sale now, starting at £20. The production, written by Tim Price and directed by Rufus Norris, tells the story of Aneurin "Nye" Bevan, the Welsh political pioneer who was MP for Tredegar when he founded the NHS. The play is described as "a vibrant and unexpectedly fun journey through the life of the man who made free healthcare a reality." The show is said to be "full of humour, heart and the undefeatable spirit of a man who believed in his vision for a better way of living." As Bevan faces the end of his life, his memories take centre stage, from his early days as a coal miner's son in Tredegar to the political clashes in Westminster that changed the future of Britain. The audience encounters friends, foes, family and revolutionary speeches, as Nye's past comes alive with warmth and bold theatricality. Sheen, originally from Newport, is joined by a cast of new and returning performers, including Remy Beasley, Matthew Bulgo, Jason Hughes, Kezrena James, Tony Jayawardena, Stephanie Jacob, Rebecca Killick, Rhodri Meilir, and Sharon Small. Pembrokeshire performer brings hit musical comedy home for one night only
PEMBROKEHIRE'S own Emily Davis returns home this June with her critically acclaimed one-woman musical comedy, Escape the Rat Race!, for a special one-night performance at Newport Memorial Hall on Saturday 28 June at 7:30pm. Fresh from a string of successful shows at leading venues including the Wales Millennium Centre, Phoenix Arts Club, and Toulouse Lautrec Jazz Club, Emily is bringing her high-energy, heartwarming, and hilariously honest show to Pembrokeshire ahead of her upcoming run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Blending stand-up, storytelling, and original music, Escape the Rat Race! follows the misadventures of Blodwen Cadwalader — a Pret-fuelled, KPI-smashing Welsh woman who's ticked every box on the corporate ladder until burnout sends her spiralling. After a sailing holiday goes spectacularly wrong, Blodwen is forced to confront what she really wants — and who she really is. 'It's such a privilege to bring this show back to Pembrokeshire,' says Emily. 'I wrote it as a love letter to anyone who's ever felt stuck, exhausted, or like they were chasing something they didn't even want. Pembrokeshire performer to return home with new comedy show
Emily Davis, a former Ysgol y Preseli pupil, has made a name for herself on the London cabaret and theatre scene with her one-woman musical comedies. She has performed at the Wales Millennium Centre and top London venues, including The Phoenix Arts Club and The Pheasantry. This June, she will return to Pembrokeshire for two performances. First, she will play Sombra in HOS Musical Theatre's summer production of The Arcadians. Sombra is a gentle spirit from the idyllic land of Arcadia, who ventures into the outside world to spread truth and kindness. Emily will also perform her new original show, Escape the Rat Race, at Newport Memorial Hall on Friday, June 28. This musical comedy is about breaking free from city life and finding joy in unexpected places. Emily said: "I always bring my new work home to Pembrokeshire – it's where I started performing, and where I feel most connected. "These shows are about real life, really. "If people leave having laughed, felt something, and maybe sung along, that's a good night." Tickets for Escape the Rat Race are available now. Emily will perform at various locations in June, including Broad Haven Hall on June 3, Clarbeston Road Hall on June 5, Fishguard Masonic Hall on June 7, and Torch Theatre on June 10.
