Youngkin sets September special election to replace Connolly

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) announced Tuesday that the special election to replace the late Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) in the state's 11th Congressional District will be held Sept. 9. Connolly died last month after a short battle with cancer. He had represented the district since 2009. In April, Connolly announced he would not seek reelection in 2026 and endorsed his former chief of staff, Fairfax County Supervisor James Walkinshaw, for the seat in May. 'James brings unmatched experience, a depth of knowledge about federal issues, and a steadfast commitment to progressive values,' Connolly wrote in a letter backing Walkinshaw. 'When I took office in 2009, appointing him Chief of Staff was one of the best decisions I made.' The Northern Virginia congressional district, which includes all of the city of Fairfax and most of Fairfax County, leans heavily Democratic. However, several Democrats have launched bids for the seat, including Walkinshaw, state Sen. Stella Pekarsky (D), state Del. Irene Shin (D), Fairfax County planning commissioner Candice Bennett, retired Navy officer Joshua Aisen, attorney Amy Roma, and attorney Leo Martinez. Candidates have until July 11 to file to run for the seat. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Connelly's former chief of staff launches bid for boss' House seat

Fairfax County Supervisor James Walkinshaw (D) launched his campaign for Virginia's 11th congressional district on Tuesday in a bid to replace his former boss, outgoing Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.). Walkinshaw worked as Connolly's chief of staff for over ten years before serving as county supervisor. The announcement comes a week after Connolly announced he would not seek reelection in 2026 following the return of esophageal cancer. 'Congressman Connolly's impact on Fairfax, Virginia, and our nation is immeasurable, and his work has touched every corner of our community,' Walkinshaw said in a statement. 'To me, he is a dear friend and mentor who has made me a better person and public servant. There is no candidate who can replace Gerry Connolly. But I was by his side during the toughest fights, including during Trump's first term, and I'm ready to fight for Fairfax on day one.' 2024 Election Coverage The heavily Democratic congressional district includes much of the Northern Virginia suburb of Fairfax County and Fairfax City. Former Vice President Kamala Harris won the district by 34 points in the 2024 presidential election, while Connolly won reelection by just over 33 points. Walkinshaw said the U.S. is in a 'five-fire alarm moment for democracy and pledged to help Virginia Democrats running up and down the ballot in this year's off-year elections. 'Step one to stopping Trump is securing a big win for the Virginia Democratic ticket in 2025 and step two is taking back Congress in 2026,' he said. 'Our campaign this year will be focused on building capacity and supporting the incredible Democrats on the ballot in Virginia this November.'

Moment drink-driver who mowed down tourist in ‘life-changing' crash is arrested after police chase

This is the moment a drink-driver was chased down and arrested by police after a hit-and-run on a tourist in Blackpool. Stephen Walkinshaw, 44, who was over the alcohol limit after spending an afternoon drinking in a local pub, drove his Jaguar F-Pace down a restricted road at speeds of up to 30mph before colliding with a woman who was visiting the seaside resort with her husband. Footage released by Lancashire Police shows Walkinshaw driving along the promenade being pursued by a squad car, after failing to stop at the scene. The 40-year-old woman was left with life-changing lower limb injuries. Walkinshaw has been jailed for three years after admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

What lies beneath

Rachelle Childs has been dead five years when new evidence leads authorities to exhume and re-examine her body. Her family consents, but otherwise the exhumation remains secret until a key POI is informed that, while he answers questions at Rachelle's inquest, her body lies in the morgue beneath that very courtroom. The inquest is explosive. Nine persons of interest are scrutinised, and her body is exhumed to help answer some vital questions. Was there ever a Walkinshaw? What happened to Rachelle in those missing nine hours after she left work? Who started the rumour about bikies cutting Rachelle's fingers off? The inquest ran for two years but concluded with an open finding. Dear Rachelle is hosted and investigated by journalist Ashlea Hansen, who teams up with retired detective and renowned cold case specialist Damian Loone, and Rachelle's sister Kristy.
