AkzoNobel Pakistan partners with WCLA
LAHORE: AkzoNobel Pakistan, the maker of Dulux paints, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) to revitalize the historic Fort Road Food Street located in the heart of old Lahore. Ms Maleeha Rashid, Director General of WCLA, and Mubbasher Omar, Chief Executive Officer, AkzoNobel Pakistan Limited graced the MoU signing ceremony regarding Let's Colour Food Street initiative. WCLA to complete work on Anarkali Tomb in one year
LAHORE: The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) is expected to complete the Rs124 million conservation work of the historic Anarkali Tomb - one of the important monuments from the Mughal era, by June 2026, 70 percent of the conservation work has been completed. According to the Authority on Wednesday, the project started in July 2024, and the purpose of this project is to restore the tomb and protect its original design and structure. The following work has been done: the building's structure has been strengthened completely; 90 percent of lime plaster work, inside and outside the building is done; stucco tracery, 80 percent of the decorative plaster design is completed; and 70 percent of traditional 'ghalib kari' and 'muqarnas kari' (ornamental ceiling work) is completed. In the next phase, flooring and fresco painting work will be carried out; for the frescoes, the WCLA is working closely with experts to study the original paintings found at the site to make sure the restoration is done carefully and accurately. Commenting on the project, WCLA Media and Marketing Director Tania Qureshi said that restoring the Anarkali Tomb is a way to bring our history back to life. 'We are using traditional methods and skilled experts to make sure the monument is saved for future generations. This will be a proud moment for Lahore's heritage,' she added. 'This project is part of WCLA's larger mission to protect historic places in Lahore and promote tourism. WCLA reaches significant progress in Anarkali Tomb restoration
The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has successfully completed 70% of the conservation work on the historic Anarkali Tomb, marking a significant achievement in the preservation of one of Lahore's most iconic Mughal-era monuments. The restoration project, which commenced in July 2024, is being executed at a cost of Rs124 million. It is expected to be completed by June 2026. According to WCLA officials, the aim of the project is to restore the tomb's original architectural features while ensuring the structural integrity and long-term preservation of the site. Key components of the restoration work completed so far include full structural reinforcement of the building, 90% completion of internal and external lime plastering, 80% completion of stucco tracery (decorative plaster work), and 70% progress in traditional Ghalib Kari and Muqarnas Kari—ornamental ceiling techniques rooted in Mughal craftsmanship. The upcoming phase of the project will focus on flooring and fresco painting. WCLA is working closely with heritage experts to study original frescoes that were discovered at the site, ensuring that the restoration work remains historically accurate and faithful to the tomb's original design. Speaking on the project's importance, Tania Qureshi, Director of Media & Marketing at WCLA, stated, 'Restoring the Anarkali Tomb is not just about preserving a monument it's about reviving our cultural identity. We are committed to using traditional materials and techniques, with the help of master craftsmen, to ensure authenticity and quality.' WCLA signs MoU with Bacha Party
LAHORE: The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bacha Party (a children accessories brand) to jointly promote tourism at heritage sites, with a special focus on creating inclusive entertainment experiences for children, an area that has traditionally been overlooked in heritage programming. According to the Authority on Monday, this unique partnership aims to combine WCLA's heritage preservation expertise with Bacha Party's innovative approach to cultural engagement and children-centric events. Together, the two organisations will develop interactive activities, heritage-themed festivals and educational experiences designed specifically for young audiences at Lahore's historic sites. The MoU outlines plans to organise regular cultural events, guided tours tailored for children and creative learning spaces that introduce young visitors to history in an exciting and accessible way. This initiative also aligns with WCLA's broader mission to foster community ownership of heritage through inclusive and sustainable tourism development. Commenting on the joint venture, Tania Qureshi, Director Media and Marketing of WCLA, said that this collaboration marks a new direction for heritage tourism in Lahore. Diplomats from 10 countries tour heritage sites
The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) on Sunday hosted diplomats from 10 countries on the second day of their official visit to the provincial capital. The ambassadors visited some of the city's iconic cultural and heritage sites, including the National College of Arts (NCA), Lahore Museum, the Tollinton Market and the restored Wazir Khan Baradari. The ambassadors from countries including Korea, Myanmar, Nepal, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Azerbaijan and representatives from the Sri Lankan High Commission were part of the delegation. The objective of the visit was to showcase Lahore's architectural heritage and highlight ongoing conservation efforts. The delegation also visited the Badshahi Mosque and the tomb of Allama Iqbal. The day concluded with an evening of traditional music and cultural performances at Lahore Fort. WCLA Director General Kamran Lashari emphasised the authority's commitment to promoting the city as a global cultural heritage destination.
