Chrysler celebrates a century of motoring

Reaching 100 years in the automotive world is no small feat, and Chrysler has officially joined that rare club. Since 1925, the brand has played a significant role in shaping how Americans and much of the world drive. Here are some key milestones… Looking for a new or used Chrysler? Find it here with CARmag! Part of the Stellantis stable, the once locally available Chrysler has been around for more than 100 years after being founded on June 6 in Detroit by Walter Chrysler. To commemorate its anniversary, the American automaker has celebrated some of its past innovations, which include introducing the high-tech Chrysler Six back in the day, developing the legendary HEMI V8 and catalysing the minivan segment. To mark the milestone, the company recently brought together more than 1 500 employees at its Auburn Hills headquarters for a tribute that focused less on sheet metal and more on the people who've kept the brand moving forward. A time capsule, designed to resemble founder Walter P. Chrysler's machinist toolbox, was packed with mementoes, including old vehicle badges and original design sketches. It's a snapshot of how far the brand has come. Related: Buying Used: Chrysler 300C (2005 – 2015) The brand is stretching the festivities with community events that speak to the loyalty of its fan base. The Carlisle Chrysler Nationals in Pennsylvania and the famous Woodward Cruise in Detroit will showcase some of the brand's standout moments. Meanwhile, Chrysler is rolling out a seven-part video series online, highlighting the vehicles and tech that helped define its legacy. While much of Chrysler's story is rooted in the United States, the brand's footprint in South Africa is worth remembering, too. Chrysler began selling cars here in the early 20th century and went local in 1941 with an assembly plant in Cape Town. Durban followed in 1947, and by 1960, the American automaker had officially launched Chrysler South Africa. The Valiant, in particular, became a familiar name on local roads, helping the brand gain a solid following. Even though its direct presence in the country has shifted over the years, the influence it had on South Africa's motoring history remains clear. Now, the brand is looking ahead. Like most automakers, the company is grappling with how to honour its heritage while embracing the shift to electrification. Whether through muscle cars or electric drivetrains, the brand continues to navigate the industry with the kind of boldness that's defined its past 100 years. Chrysler celebrates 100 years with its coolest cars, while execs anticipate brand's future

Happy birthday, Chrysler! On Wednesday, June 4, the automaker celebrated 100 years in the car business. In those years, Chrysler was one of the brands to power Detroit through the auto industry's heyday. Along the way, it engineered hundreds of vehicles, ranging from wacky concept cars to the family focused Pacifica minivan. Chrysler brought 21 of the coolest and wackiest of its vehicles to Belle Isle for members of the news media to test-drive around the island. Among them was a 1926 B70 prototype, driven way back then by Chrysler's founder, Walter P. Chrysler, himself. Several iterations of the popular 300 sedan — originally pitched as a muscle car for bankers — looped around Belle Isle. Two wood-plated cars — a LeBaron and a 1948 Town & Country -- were on scene, and the star of the show was one of the nine remaining Chrysler Turbine Cars: a sleek, space-age two-door car with a jet engine under the hood. The Turbine Car runs on gasoline, vodka, perfume or anything else that burns. For this event, Chrysler historians ran the vehicle on kerosene. The Turbine Car was smooth and powerful, and it sounded like taxiing in an airplane while driving. The rotund 1996 Town & Country, too, was a surprisingly pleasant drive. The 1934 Airflow Sedan, though, had an inconvenient turn radius and a massive steering wheel, but any sweat broken while wrestling a turn was cooled off by a breeze through the windshield, which flipped open like any other window on the car. Speeding: Everyone speeds on Detroit's Lodge Freeway. But there's a reason for the 55-mph limit. Brandt Rosenbusch, Stellantis' manager of historical services, said hauling all of Chrysler's most notable vehicles out to Belle Isle wasn't easy. Most of them don't ever drive on public roads, he said. "You can see how beautiful these cars are, so we make a rule not to drive them on public roads," Rosenbusch said, noting that Chrysler's anniversary was a rare and meaningful exception to the rule. Chrysler runs in Rosenbusch's blood. His grandfather worked at the Chrysler tank plant during Detroit's time as the Arsenal of Democracy. Rosenbusch's fatherinterned with Chrysler's design studios and worked in public relations for the company for several decades. A year after his dad retired, Rosenbusch carried the torch and took a job with the automaker in 1990. "My whole life has been Chrysler," he said. The celebration of the brand's 100 years raised questions about what the next 100 years might look like for an automaker that has been in flux since filing for bankruptcy in 2009. After a series of mergers and product line shrinkages, Chrysler currently offers one vehicle in the Pacifica. An article by Free Press auto critic Mark Phelan recently suggested the next Stellantis CEO consider ending Chrysler, adding to the din of others who scoff at an automaker that offers only minivans. Chrysler's future: Chrysler CEO discusses future of brand as it approaches 100th birthday Chris Feuell, the CEO of Chrysler, said the brand isn't going anywhere. The Pacifica is due for a revamp, she said, and for the first time in a decade, there is a new Chrysler vehicle coming. "In 2027, we will launch our first new product in more than 10 years, and that will be a desized crossover," Feuell said. Feuell doubled down on what she has previously told the Free Press, saying that the new Stellantis CEO, Antonio Filosa, is committed to keeping the Chrysler name in the international company's vast profile. "I am so thrilled to have Antonio Filosa at the helm now, leading the company," Feuell said. "He is a true fan of Chrysler and is 100% behind supporting continued investment." For the historian Rosenbusch, continuing the legacy of Chrysler is more than sentimentality — it's about preserving what makes Detroit great. "Every company is international now, but our heart and soul is really here," Rosenbusch said while flanked by a century's worth of Chrysler vehicles. "Detroit is Chrysler, and Chrysler is a part of Detroit." Liam Rappleye covers Stellantis and the UAW at the Detroit Free Press. New York's Chrysler Building Is Back on the Market

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." The Chrysler Building, one of the most iconic and recognizable skyscrapers in New York City's skyline, is up for sale once again. Back in January, a New York state judge effectively evicted owners RFR Holdings, a real estate investment firm, from the building after not paying their rent. Now, Cooper Union, a private arts and science college that owns the land underneath the skyscraper, has hired British real estate firm Savills to oversee the sale, according to Time Out. Completed in 1930, the Chrysler Building briefly held the title of world's tallest building for 11 months. It stands 1,046 feet tall, with 77 floors. (The Empire State Building, just a few blocks away, surpassed the Chrysler Building as the world's tallest in 1931, standing at 1,250 feet tall, not including its antenna.) Designed by architect William Van Alen, it was commissioned by Walter P. Chrysler as a symbol of the Chrysler Corporation, with its stainless steel spire and ornamented crown. Ownership of the building has changed hands a few times already, for as much as $800 million in 2008 when the government of Abu Dhabi bought a 90% stake in the tower. But then it sold for a shockingly low fraction of the cost at $150 million in 2019 to co-owners Signa, an Austrian real estate company, and RFR, a New York-based development firm. But in 2024, according to the New York Times, Signa filed for insolvency, and an Austrian court ruled that it would have to sell its share of the building. Cooper Union and Savills aren't disclosing the new price tag for the Chrysler Building just yet. Even with astronomical property costs in Manhattan right now, it's questionable how much Savills might be able to fetch. The aformentioned NYT report paints a more dilapidated picture inside of the shining structure on the outside, with tenants complaining about 'bad cell service, the lack of natural sunlight, elevator troubles, murky water coming out of fountains, and pest infestations.' Midtown's shimmering Art Deco crown jewel is officially for sale—again. The Chrysler Building, that spired symbol of 1930s New York glamour, has hit the market after a courtroom soap opera that ended with a $21 million eviction notice and a developer ousted from their lease, reports Crain's New York Business. For the first time since 2019, the skyscraper's leasehold is up for grabs. Cooper Union, which owns the land beneath the tower, has tapped real estate firm Savills to shop it around. Just don't expect a bargain. While the asking price is under wraps, the last sale, involving RFR and the now-insolvent Signa, closed at a fire-sale $151 million, down from a staggering $800 million in 2008. Of course, whoever takes the keys will still owe Cooper Union $32 million annually in rent, rising to $41 million by 2028. Pocket change! Built as a 'monument to me' by auto tycoon Walter P. Chrysler, the 77-story tower has been everything from a Depression-era office oasis to a backdrop in Sex and the City and Men in Black 3. Today, it's 100% leased on paper. But behind the stainless steel gargoyles and red Moroccan marble lobby lie cracked ceilings, finicky elevators, pest problems and lobby tourists who try to sneak past the turnstiles. 'There's been times where we would get water from any of the fountains and it would just be completely brown,' one tenant told the New York Times last year. 'My office just ended up shipping giant bottles of water from Costco.' Savills' pitch? Potential. 'It's a great opportunity to reimagine what is the crown jewel of the New York City skyline,' said David Heller, an EVP at the firm. With rents at $65 to $79 per square foot—half the price of shiny neighbors like One Vanderbilt —the Chrysler is a relative steal. But prospective buyers should bring vision, cash and maybe a pest control contract. As Ruth Colp-Haber, a real estate broker, told the Times, 'It's a tale of two buildings.' One is an icon. The other needs a serious glow-up.
