Man Utd transfer mistakes under fresh scrutiny after Antony and Rashford form
Manchester United have struggled in the Premier League this season under both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim but some of their former stars have thrived away from Old Trafford Manchester United's transfer business has come under scrutiny again as some of their star men thrive out on loan. Antony and Marcus Rashford aren't the only ones enjoying a new lease on life away from Old Trafford, though. Last summer, United cashed in on Aaron Wan-Bissaka after triggering a one-year contract extension. They took a huge hit on the former Crystal Palace man, recouping less than a third of the £50million they paid for him in 2019. The 27-year-old had ups and downs at United, but has wasted little time impressing in his new surroundings. He has even scored two goals for the Hammers, matching his tally from 190 games at his previous club. Wan-Bissaka has been rewarded for that fast start by winning the Hammer of the Year award. Previous winners of the award - handed out to West Ham's player of the season - include current captain Jarrod Bowen and former skipper Declan Rice. The news hasn't escaped United fans, who have spotted a pattern of players improving after leaving the club. Scott McTominay is on the verge of a Serie A title with Napoli and Antony has reached the Conference League final with Betis, while Rashford's form for Aston Villa leaves them in with a shot of another season in the Champions League. "Everyone that has left man united recently has turned into a goat," one fan wrote on social media. "It's not the fact that we sold him. It's the fact we sold him for pennies compared to what he's worth," was the verdict from another. "Always saw the value of the Spidey," another United fan said. "He was our best fullback who is clear of [Diogo[ Dalot and even [Luke] Shaw on a good day." Wan-Bissaka helped West Ham complete a first league double over United since back in 2006-07. He played the full 90 minutes in both games, a 2-1 home win in October and a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford in May, setting up a goal for Bowen in the latter. Upon joining West Ham in August, Wan-Bissaka explained his decision to move was an easy one. "It was a no brainer for me to join West Ham – I'm excited and happy to be here," he said. "It's an amazing feeling to be back in London, and I'm excited for what's coming. I was born here, so I know the ins and outs of London, which plays a big part in my life, so to be back playing in this city means a lot to me" United managed to soften the blow by signing Noussair Mazraoui in a similar cut-price deal, with the former Bayern Munich defender impressing in his first season at Old Trafford. Even so, there are plenty who have been left frustrated that Wan-Bissaka was unable to build on his early Palace promise in a United shirt. Manchester United 0-2 West Ham: Graham Potter's vision clicks as Hammers battle to rare Old Trafford victory
West Ham arrested an eight-game winless run on Sunday, scoring either side of halftime through Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen to condemn an uninspiring Manchester United to a 17th Premier League defeat of the season. For the Hammers, it appears Graham Potter's system may finally be clicking. They set up to frustrate Man United, and did exactly that, sitting in a compact block off the ball to limit the hosts' attacking options before weathering a late assault to preserve their clean sheet. Ruben Amorim must come up with the answers to more difficult questions, though, as his side missed an opportunity to build much-needed momentum ahead of the Europa League final. The pace of play in the first half was markedly lethargic under the baking Manchester sun. United were cautious in their approach, enjoying plenty of early possession and finding themselves in threatening positions, but generally opting against crossing to the patiently waiting Rasmus Hojlund. Amad Diallo, making his first start since recovering from injury, was the one player inclined to take risks, going close with a pair of curling efforts as he kept Aaron Wan-Bissaka on his heels. Beyond his efforts, though, Man United's only notable goal threat before the break came from a pair of speculative long-range strikes courtesy of Bruno Fernandes and Hojlund, neither of which worried Alphonse Areola. West Ham defended effectively and were equally efficient in possession. A rejuvenated James Ward-Prowse, back in favour under Potter, was pulling the strings, linking up effectively with Wan-Bissaka and Mohammed Kudus, who was responsible for the cross which Soucek tapped home to open the scoring with 26 minutes gone. The situation went promptly from bad to worse for the hosts after the break. Manuel Ugarte was caught dawdling as United looked to play out from the back, allowing West Ham to break three-on-three. Wan-Bissaka, enjoying his return to Old Trafford, pounced after Kudus' shot was blocked, squaring for Bowen to finish past the scrambling United back line, netting his 11th goal of the season. In a further injury blow to Man United, who were already without some key players coming into the tie, Leny Yoro went down injured off the ball early in the second period. Amorim will be sweating on his fitness with the Europa League final less than two weeks away. Hojlund also suffered a knock in the second half, but played on. United were valiant as they looked to respond to West Ham, and while they applied good pressure, they were routinely frustrated by Areola. The Frenchman twice denied Hojlund from close range as the clock wound down, forcing him wide from a counter before later flashing across goal to deny him again. Man United piled yet more pressure, and West Ham appeared to be cracking, but 31 crosses, 20 shots, and eight corners ultimately amounted to nought for the hosts. West Ham battled to the end, preserving a clean sheet to record a first Premier League win at Old Trafford since 2007.

West Ham inflict more league misery on sorry Man Utd
Man United 0 West Ham 2 RUBEN Amorim presided over another Old Trafford horror show - and a ninth Manchester United home defeat of the Premier League campaign - with a European final in Bilbao next week the only saving grace from one of the worst seasons in the proud club's history. A 17th league defeat of the campaign, against a West Ham side without a victory in their last eight outings no less, represents the most losses United have collected in one season since they were last relegated from the top flight in 1973-74. In the just over half-century since, United have never lost as many and the current table also leaves them well on course for their final lowest league position since that relegation; the 13th they finished in 1989-90. The Europa League campaign - and, now, the Final - has dominated United's season for weeks and Amorim responded with six changes from his semi-final winning line-up, an approach which led to West Ham, unsurprisingly, taking a 26th minute lead. The goal featured a prominent role from former United full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who looked very much like a man with a point to prove on his return. It was his clever pass into the United area that allowed Mohammed Kudus to drive a cross-shot towards the far post where Tomas Soucek arrived ahead of Harry Amass, flicking the ball in via a slight deflection off the United youngster. It was a familiar sight for United supporters who have seen their team concede first in 12 of their 18 home league games this season - only relegated Leicester, with 15, have done it more frequently. And, fortunately for Amorim, this week's European semi-final win over Athletic Bilbao has bought him and his team plenty of good will and breathing space when it comes to deserved criticism. It was just as well because, aside from an early shot from Amad Diallo, a chance carved out thanks to an excellent cross-field pass from Mason Mount, which Alphone Areola parried well, there was not much cheer for the home fans. Things could have worsened for United inside the opening 30 seconds of the second half, but James Ward-Prowse drive his shot straight at Altay Bayindir. And, with an eye on the final in Bilbao against Spurs in ten days time, things did worsen for Amorim a few minutes later when Leny Yoro went off injured and the United manager also took off Luke Shaw with an eye on that tie. Mount briefly offered hope, after a good probing attack from Diallo, but hit his shot straight at the keeper and it was not long before West Ham were back in the ascendancy, Bayindir clawing away a dangerous Jarrod Bowen cross, one-handed. Just seconds later, the Hammers lead was doubled as Manuel Ugarte was caught dawdling on the ball by Wan-Bissaka in the 57th minute. Kudus gathered the loose ball, surging forward past Harry Maguire and, after his shot was blocked, Wan-Bissaka sent the rebound across goal for Bowen to convert from six yards. Rasmus Hojlund, who had missed with a couple of half-chances in the opening period, continued to endure a miserable afternoon, heading just wide, then appearing on the end of a United counter-attack, only to hit an attempt straight at Alphonse Areola. Indeed, as has been the case in several recent games, Maguire looked United's best chance of clawing back a goal, with one header that bounced just wide and another which Areola had to save well on his goalline. It was Maguire who appeared on the end of a Bruno Fernandes free-kick after 79 minutes, with his touch falling for Hojlund whose wretched game continued as he failed to force the ball in from two yards, with Areola making a solid block. Man United (3-4-2-1): Bayindir 6; Mazraoui 5, Yoro 6 (Maguire 52, 6), Shaw 5 (Lindelof 52, 5); Diallo 6 (Eriksen 83), Fernandes 5, Ugarte 4 (Dorgu 59, 5), Amass 5; Mainoo 5, Mount 6 (Garnacho 59, 5); Hojlund 4. Substitutes (not used) Heaton, Casemiro, Fredricson, Obi. West Ham (3–4-1-2): Areola 7; Todibo 7 (Mavropanos 83), Kilman 7, Cresswell 7; Coufal 7 (Palmieri 83), Ward-Prowse 6, Rodriguez 6 (Alvarez 64, 6), Wan-Bissaka 9; Soucek 7; Bowen 7 (Fullkrug 73, 6), Kudus 8 (Soler 73, 6). Substitutes (not used) Fabianski, Paqueta, Guilherme, Ferguson. Referee: J Gillett 7

Soccer-West Ham's Wan-Bissaka called up to play for DR Congo
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - West Ham United v Leicester City - London Stadium, London, Britain - February 27, 2025 West Ham United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka in action REUTERS/Ian Walton/File Photo (Reuters) -West Ham United's English-born right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been named in a 26-man squad by Democratic Republic of Congo for friendlies in June, setting him up for a possible trip to the next Africa Cup of Nations and potentially the 2026 World Cup. The 27-year-old Wan-Bissaka had turned down previous approaches from the Congolese to play for them, notably ahead of last year's Cup of Nations finals in the Ivory Coast. His family hails from DR Congo but he has played for England at under-21 level and earned a first senior England call-up at the start of the 2019-20 season, having made an impressive start with Manchester United following a move from Crystal Palace. However, he had to withdraw from the England squad through injury and never got called up again. Wan-Bissaka, who joined Premier League side West Ham last year, would have to switch international allegiance to play for the Congolese but FIFA's latest list of players who have been allowed to make nationality changes does not include him. DR Congo, under coach Sebastien Desabre, are using the two friendly matches in Orleans, France against Mali on June 5 and Madagascar three days later to prepare for the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers, where they lead Senegal by a point at the top of Group B and host them in a key match in September. The winners of each group qualify directly for the finals. DR Congo will also compete at the Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco at the end of the year, drawn in the same group with Benin, Botswana and Senegal.
