Manchester United 0-2 West Ham: Graham Potter's vision clicks as Hammers battle to rare Old Trafford victory

Yahoo11-05-2025

West Ham arrested an eight-game winless run on Sunday, scoring either side of halftime through Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen to condemn an uninspiring Manchester United to a 17th Premier League defeat of the season.
For the Hammers, it appears Graham Potter's system may finally be clicking. They set up to frustrate Man United, and did exactly that, sitting in a compact block off the ball to limit the hosts' attacking options before weathering a late assault to preserve their clean sheet.
Ruben Amorim must come up with the answers to more difficult questions, though, as his side missed an opportunity to build much-needed momentum ahead of the Europa League final.
The pace of play in the first half was markedly lethargic under the baking Manchester sun. United were cautious in their approach, enjoying plenty of early possession and finding themselves in threatening positions, but generally opting against crossing to the patiently waiting Rasmus Hojlund.
Amad Diallo, making his first start since recovering from injury, was the one player inclined to take risks, going close with a pair of curling efforts as he kept Aaron Wan-Bissaka on his heels.
Beyond his efforts, though, Man United's only notable goal threat before the break came from a pair of speculative long-range strikes courtesy of Bruno Fernandes and Hojlund, neither of which worried Alphonse Areola.
West Ham defended effectively and were equally efficient in possession. A rejuvenated James Ward-Prowse, back in favour under Potter, was pulling the strings, linking up effectively with Wan-Bissaka and Mohammed Kudus, who was responsible for the cross which Soucek tapped home to open the scoring with 26 minutes gone.
The situation went promptly from bad to worse for the hosts after the break. Manuel Ugarte was caught dawdling as United looked to play out from the back, allowing West Ham to break three-on-three.
Wan-Bissaka, enjoying his return to Old Trafford, pounced after Kudus' shot was blocked, squaring for Bowen to finish past the scrambling United back line, netting his 11th goal of the season.
In a further injury blow to Man United, who were already without some key players coming into the tie, Leny Yoro went down injured off the ball early in the second period. Amorim will be sweating on his fitness with the Europa League final less than two weeks away. Hojlund also suffered a knock in the second half, but played on.
United were valiant as they looked to respond to West Ham, and while they applied good pressure, they were routinely frustrated by Areola. The Frenchman twice denied Hojlund from close range as the clock wound down, forcing him wide from a counter before later flashing across goal to deny him again.
Man United piled yet more pressure, and West Ham appeared to be cracking, but 31 crosses, 20 shots, and eight corners ultimately amounted to nought for the hosts. West Ham battled to the end, preserving a clean sheet to record a first Premier League win at Old Trafford since 2007.

Liverpool ready to make £100m PSG star their next signing: report

Advertisement The Wirtz move has been the story of the summer so far, with Liverpool reportedly agreeing on Friday morning to a new record Premier League fee. The Reds have already concluded a £29.5m deal for Jeremie Frimpong from the same Bundesliga outfit, but they aren't done there. Adding another £100m to their outgoings doesn't seem feasible, but the Merseysiders have already sold Caoimhin Kelleher in a deal worth up to £18m, and may yet be open to sales for all of Jarell Quansah, Harvey Elliott, Kostas Tsimikas and Darwin Nunez, to name just a few. Advertisement It's thought that the 22-year-old would cost north of £100m, which, if progressed, could see the Reds footing a £300m bill in total this transfer window. The young Frenchman is also Bayern Munich's primary target, but that was also the case with Wirtz, who has ended up at Anfield. Barcola was once thought to be one of PSG's brightest talents, but has slipped down the pecking order in the French capital on account of the emergence of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue. If they do, have no doubt that clubs like Newcastle United, who seem to be in a perennial battle with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) despite their wealthy owners, will have plenty of thoughts about it. But it's tough to deny that an attacking unit containing Wirtz, Barcola and Mohamed Salah would be an exciting watch next season. Barcola is valued at €70m, according to Transfermarkt.

FIFA Planning to Expand Club World Cup in 2029 - Why More is Not Better

FIFA Planning to Expand Club World Cup in 2029 - Why More is Not Better originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FIFA expanded the 2026 World Cup to 48 teams. President Gianni Infantino says it is "proof in our desire to make football truly global". Critics say it is simply proof of his desire to make more money, with little concern for the fans or quality of the spectacle. Advertisement There are several flaws with a 48 team World Cup. It creates a complicated structure that will lead to a bunch of meaningless games. there really 48 "great" international soccer teams? That's a rhetorical question if it's not obvious. Thirdly, this overload of games will inevitably lead to more injuries to star players. A CWC Without Barcelona and Liverpool But as long as cash registers are ringing, FIFA will always prioritize quantity over quality. Before a ball has even been kicked in the 2025 Club World Cup 32-team tournament, plans are afoot to expand it to 48 teams in 2029. To some extent FIFA is the "victim" of it's own methods for picking the CWC participants that has lead to the likes of FC Red Bull Salzburg competing, while Liverpool, Arsenal and Barcelona - three of the best clubs in the world - have missed out. Advertisement Now the big European teams are lobbying FIFA to be included next time around to get their slice of the $1bn prize money. The International players' union, Fifpro, will doubtless oppose the move in order to protect their members. But is it really in clubs best interests to be there at all? England manager Thomas Tuchel recently said of the CWC and it's impact on next seasons Premier League: "I think it will have a huge impact and it will give Liverpool and Arsenal a huge advantage to not be there." And will it stop there? That's another rhetorical question. Infantino and FIFA are currently entertaining the notion of expanding the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams, "to mark the centenary of the competition". Milner signs new deal with Seagulls

James Milner has signed a new one-year deal with Albion. And Fabian Hurzeler is delighted he will still be around. The highly experienced midfielder or full-back made a fleeting return to the pitch near the end of the season finale at Tottenham after months battling injury. Advertisement But Hurzeler had always made it clear he wanted to keep him on board. His deal was due to expire at the end of this month. 'Julio needs to play' - but agent says FC Porto talks are at 'an impasse' Cameroon legend says Baleba 'will go for for £100m - and I hope it's to Chelsea' Hurzeler said: 'I'm really pleased we will have James with us again this season. 'Last season he wasn't able to help the team on the pitch as much as he would have liked, but around the squad his experience is invaluable, especially for the younger players. "He's a great guy to have in our environment, who is always there for me and the team. I'm looking forward to working with him again.' Advertisement Speaking at Tottenham, and looking forward to the 2025-26 campaign, Milner said: "You look at the season we have. We have good players and good results but there have been times when we've dropped points and shouldn't have done. You need a bit experience. "You look at the players have come in, the likes of Mats Wieffer and Gruda, difficult coming to a new team and country but look how good they've been in last few weeks. "It takes time. I'm excited for next year for sure. Hopefully I can be a part of it. You look at the potential that's there with another year under the belt. "Carlos Baleba is another player with more games under his belt and maturity. Advertisement Albion new boy reveals what Tzimas will bring as Greek teens team up up again "Hopefully with myself involved and the senior guys can keep pushing these guys. The more games, the game understanding will improve. "The manager has done a fantastic job but another season under his belt I think it is exciting for next season." Milner has made 638 Premier League appearances in a career which began at Leeds United in 2001 and has included successful spells with Manchester City, Aston Villa and Liverpool. Only Gareth Barry (653) has played more games in Premier League history.
