Perak AAA president Karim Ibrahim back to helm Malaysia Athletics
New MA chief Karim Ibrahim urged all officials to unite 'for the future of athletics'. KUALA LUMPUR : Perak Amateur Athletics Association president Karim Ibrahim has returned to helm Malaysia Athletics (MA) for the 2025-2029 term after winning the national body's election at its annual general meeting today. Karim, who served as MA president from 2014 to 2019, garnered 25 votes to defeat Negeri Sembilan Athletics Association president Mark William Ling, who secured 14 votes. 'I am grateful for the trust to once again lead Malaysia Athletics for the 2025- 2029 term. 'I also hope that all the negative remarks made during the campaign can be put aside, and that we unite for the future of athletics,' he said after the election at Wisma OCM. Earlier, outgoing president Shahidan Kassim made a surprise announcement by withdrawing from the race just before the election. The post of deputy president was won by Terengganu Amateur Athletics Association president Wan Hisham Wan Salleh, who secured 22 votes, defeating contenders Mohamat Hassan (nine votes) and Sallehuddin Satar (five votes). Mohamed Rusli Abdullah, R Annamalai and Padmanathan Nagappan were elected vice-presidents after beating four other contenders. The women's vice-president is Josephine Kang, who was the sole candidate.

Shahidan pulls out of race for Malaysia Athletics' presidency
Shahidan Kassim helmed Malaysia Athletics from 2006 to 2012, before returning to lead the national body in June 2022. KUALA LUMPUR : The race for the top post in Malaysia Athletics took a dramatic turn today after incumbent president Shahidan Kassim withdrew at the eleventh hour. MA confirmed the pullout in a video posted on its official Facebook page, featuring the former federal minister. Shahidan, however, did not disclose why he decided to drop out of the race. 'I, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, wish to withdraw from contesting the presidency of Malaysia Athletics for the 2025-2028 term. I hope this general assembly proceeds smoothly and in an orderly manner,' he said in the video. Shahidan helmed MA from 2006 to 2012, before returning to lead the national body in June 2022. It is understood that another candidate, Terengganu Amateur Athletics Association president Wan Hisham Wan Salleh, has also withdrawn from the race for the president's post. This development now sets the stage for a straight fight between current MA deputy president Mark William Ling and Perak Amateur Athletics Association president Karim Ibrahim.
