PHNOM PENH: Chinese and Cambodian artists jointly performed at the pedestrianised Walking Street in Phnom Penh on Saturday evening (May 24), attracting crowds of spectators. Cambodian Tourism Minister Huot Hak and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin were among the crowds watching the show. During the one-hour performance, the artists entertained strollers along the riverside Sisowath Quay with a variety of performance arts, including traditional music, dance and acrobatics, among others. BRI-backed Industrial zone boosts economic growth, improves local livelihoods: Hun Manet

SIHANOUKVILLE, Cambodia: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet (pic) said here on Thursday (May 22) that the Sihanoukville Special Economy Zone (SSEZ) has not only boosted the kingdom's trade and economic growth, but also improved local livelihoods. The 11-sq-km SSEZ, jointly ventured by Chinese and Cambodian companies, is a flagship project under China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Hun Manet made the remarks during a ceremony to mark more than 200 enterprises investing in the SSEZ. He said investors from different countries, including China, Europe, the United States, South Korea, and South-East Asian countries, have established factories in the zone, generating about 32,000 direct jobs. "The successful operation of the SSEZ is a testament to the close cooperation between Cambodia and China under the BRI," he said. "The rapid development of Sihanoukville is a practical and undeniable evidence of the fruitful cooperation between Cambodia and China," the prime minister added. He said the SSEZ has injected and will continue to inject vigorous impetus into building the all-weather Cambodia-China community with a shared future in the new era. He thanked Chinese investors for having strong confidence in Cambodia's peace, security and political stability, saying that China is the top investor and largest trading partner of Cambodia. Meanwhile, Hun Manet reiterated Cambodia's staunch support for the one-China principle and China's global initiatives such as the BRI, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative. Established in 2008, the SSEZ, situated about 12km from the international deep-water Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, is home to multinational enterprises that manufacture clothes and textiles, luggage and leather goods, medical supplies, hardware and machinery, construction materials, home furniture, auto parts and car tires, and new materials, among others. According to the SSEZ operator, the value of imports and exports passing through the zone reached US$4.07 billion in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 21.3 per cent. Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin said the SSEZ could be called a "shining pearl" in building Cambodia's Industrial and Technological Corridor. "The SSEZ is not only a role model of China-Cambodia cooperation, but also a symbol of China-Cambodia friendship," he said. He added that the iron-clad friendship between China and Cambodia is unbreakable and has become a role model of interstate relations. Chan Sreyneang, a 29-year-old worker at a garment factory in the SSEZ, said she is happy with her job as it has provided her a steady income, and the atmosphere in the zone is also clean and green. "Here, there are a lot of factories that have created a lot of jobs for our workers. For me, I'm really excited and happy to work here," she told Xinhua. Sreyneang said she has worked at the zone for more than 10 years and likes her job very much because it is easy and has provided her with a decent wage that helps improve her family's livelihood. Hoeung Sophea, a 23-year-old worker at a garment factory in the SSEZ, said the zone has not only contributed to boosting Cambodia's economic growth, but also generated a lot of jobs for locals. "There are many factories here, so a lot of people have come to work here. With jobs, their living conditions have improved," she told Xinhua. Sophea, who has worked in the zone for nearly five years and earned a monthly wage of more than 300 dollars, said the SSEZ has helped lift her family out of poverty. "With my job here, my livelihood is much better than before," the mother of a child said. "Previously, I did not have a job, so I was broke, but now, I have a job, so I have money to support my family." Neak Chandarith, director of the Cambodia 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Research Center, said the SSEZ is situated near the international deep-sea port, which is very convenient for trade exchanges between Cambodia and the rest of the world. "The SSEZ, together with other flagship BRI projects, has been playing a crucial role in helping Cambodia achieve its ambitious goals of becoming an upper-middle income country by 2030 and a high-income nation by 2050," he said. - Xinhua.

BYD breaks ground on assembly plant in Cambodia

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has broken ground on a new assembly plant in Cambodia, marking an expansion of its production capabilities in Southeast Asia. The firm is investing around $32m for the initial phase of constructing a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) vehicle assembly facility, reported Phnom Penh Post. Spanning 12ha, the facility is located in the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone. It will assemble both pure electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The facility is expected to commence production in November this year and will have an anticipated annual production capacity of 10,000 vehicles. The construction of the BYD assembly plant is expected to be completed by October. Chinese ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin and first vice-president of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) Sun Chanthol were present at the groundbreaking event. Chanthol was quoted by the publication as saying: 'BYD's investment reflects the confidence foreign investors have in the Cambodian government, thanks to the smart and capable leadership across generations. Under the CDC's leadership, we continue to improve the business and investment environment through promoting investment laws, outreach abroad and simplifying related procedures.' Cambodia's EV sector is experiencing a small but rapid growth. Registrations of EVs soared to 2,253 units in 2024, an increase from the 313 recorded in 2023. The new plant in Cambodia represents BYD's second venture in Southeast Asia, following the establishment of a facility in Thailand in July 2024, which boasts an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. Further expansion in the region includes BYD's plans to complete its $1bn Indonesian plant by the end of 2025, according to a January report of Reuters. BYD's Indonesia president director Eagle Zhao had stated that the plant's long-term strategy is focused on the export market. The Indonesia plant is being constructed at an industrial complex in Subang, West Java. It will have an annual production capacity of 150,000 EV units. This month, BYD reported a 100.4% year-on-year increase in net profit attributable to shareholders for the first quarter of the 2025 financial year. Its net profits reached 9.15bn yuan ($1.3bn). Port to deep space: China's ‘hopeless' satellites create first Earth-moon nav-com network

The world's first satellite constellation in Earth-moon space is up and running, after a team of young Chinese engineers recovered two of the spacecraft that had been stranded in the wrong orbit for months following a launch mishap last year. Advertisement The constellation of three satellites operating in 'cislunar' space forms a highly efficient communication and navigation network stretching from low Earth orbit to distant retrograde orbit (DRO), a region 310,000km to 450,000km (192,600-280,000 miles) from Earth, according to state broadcaster CCTV. That area is often seen as a potential staging point for missions to the moon, Mars and beyond. Among the mission's technical firsts was a record-setting 1.17 million km space-to-space communication link between satellites, showing that a network could stay connected reliably across the vast distance between Earth and the moon, CCTV said on Tuesday. 11:05 Space race elevates Asia in new world order Space race elevates Asia in new world order 'For the first time, we've showed that satellites can track each other instead of relying on ground stations,' said Wang Wenbin, a researcher at the Centre for Space Applications Engineering and Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the lead institute on the project.
