Anybody who gets the Switch 2 early won't be able to play it – here's why

Some Nintendo Switch 2 unboxings have already been up (and taken down) on YouTube and other places across the internet as stock of the gaming handheld leaks out ahead of next week's launch. It's not surprising since new tech launching in such high quantities is obviously going to appear in public places. What is surprising is what Nintendo has done to ensure no more gameplay leaks out before launch. That's because the new Switch 2 consoles appear to have been effectively bricked before the June 5 launch date. How? It seems they need a mandatory update to work. The long and the short of it is that it seems you won't be able to play anything until you connect it to the internet and download the update. That explains why we also haven't seen leaked footage of Mario Kart online beyond what was revealed from the original hands on sessions. This version of the unboxing video is still live on X/Twitter, but all you can see is the box and the console in its packaging. A full setup video did appear earlier this week showing menus, the new Joy-cons and some settings but has also now disappeared. A Switch 2 unit is already out in the wild. It's apparently locked behind a Day 1 patch and can't be used. — Stealth (@Stealth40k) May 27, 2025 Regular gaming deals poster Wario64 also said on X/Twitter that 'another person shared with me that they have a Nintendo Switch 2 as well. I have no permission to post pics but can share that when they try to boot a Switch 1 game, a message prompts 'Please connect to the internet and update your system.'' We got hands on with the Switch 2 at a recent preview event and declared' the Switch 2 feels like a premium upgrade to its predecessor, from features like built-in mouse controls and a 1080p, 120Hz, HDR screen, to beefier hardware that can competently run current-gen games while significantly sprucing up its back catalogue. There are still long-term questions over whether this larger form factor will be comfortable, battery life in handheld mode, as well as the big GameChat feature that couldn't be tested at the live event. But with a first-party line-up balancing between new, crowd-pleasing, and experimental, in tandem with a shedload of third-party support, the Switch 2 is in good shape to build the hype momentum from its summer launch to the holidays.' First Nintendo Switch 2 unboxing has already happened but there's a catch

Switch 2 consoles are now out in the wild, but Nintendo has a safeguard in place to stop people from playing the console before launch. We're just over a week away from the Switch 2's launch on Thursday, June 5 and some retailers have already received stock in advance of the big day. Like all console launches, the problem with sending stock to retailers is that it virtually ensures that leaks will happen – especially as some shops appear to be leaving Switch 2 consoles in public view. It turns out, Nintendo has concocted a plan to counter this concern, by making the console useless until a day one patch is released. This detail was confirmed after someone on YouTube posted a video showing them unboxing the Switch 2 console. The video has since been taken down (although it's been shared elsewhere), but in the comments, they claimed the console is 'locked' and 'needs update to function'. Someone else supported this claim to gaming deals guru Wario64, stating that when they try to boot up an original Switch game on the Switch 2, a message reads: 'Please connect to the internet and update your system.' While it's unclear if this update is required in order to play Switch 2 games, it's safe to assume that's the case considering no leaked footage of Mario Kart World has (at the time of writing, at least) made its way online. If there are restrictions on how Switch 2 works without online connectivity then that is going to be very poorly received by fans, but that would be quite out of keeping with Nintendo's usual approach. More Trending So far there's no indication that physical copies of games need any kind of online connection to work but no one's going to know for sure until next week. It's possible the update mentioned is tied to backwards compatibility. Nintendo has already said some original Switch games, including Doom Eternal and Pizza Tower, require an update to function on the Switch 2, which will be rolled out 'by launch or shortly after'. Either way, whether intentional or not, this seems to mean that anyone who does get a Switch 2 before launch won't be able to play the system early. Aside from Mario Kart World, the Switch 2's launch line-up includes Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Split Fiction, and many others. Nintendo Switch 2 confirmed to support USB mice — it fixes my biggest issue with the console after playing it

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch in a little over a week — and we're still finding out new things about the console. When I tried out the system for myself last month as part of a Nintendo showcase in London, I came away impressed with all but one of the new features of the Switch 2: mouse mode. During my time playing Drag X Drive, I found using the Joy-Con 2s on the table in front of me more hassle than it was worth. However, now we have confirmation the console will support USB gaming mice thanks to a video published on Koi Tecmo America's YouTube channel (spotted by Wario64 on X) showing it in operation. As part of gameplay footage for Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening, the game's producer Michi Ryu produces a USB mouse, plugs it into the Switch 2 and starts using it alongside a Joy-Con. According to Ryu, once a USB mouse is plugged in a message will appear in the top left portion of the screen confirming the connection. It will then take priority over the Joy-Con 2. During the course of the demo, Ryu switches between the Joy-Con 2 and the USB mouse and even uses them at the same time. It's great to see Nintendo build this into the Switch 2 and it could have major gameplay advantages for strategy games like Civilization VII or even shooters like Cyberpunk 2077. Of course, it also throws up plenty of new questions. Will all USB-C mice work with the system or just a select few? What about wireless mice? Which games are supported? Will we also be able to use a USB keyboard with the Switch 2? Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Speaking from my own experience, the Joy-Con 2 in mouse mode was okay and it would do in a pinch if you really needed to use a mouse. But the necessary design of the Joy-Con means it's not as comfortable to use for longer periods as a traditional mouse. So being able to plug one in and use it like you would with a PC is an exciting development for a console that's selling itself as a versatile gaming machine. If this development has convinced you of the need to pick up a Switch 2 for launch day on June 5, then follow our Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order live blog for the best chance of bagging one for yourself.

Some Switch 2 Games Will Support A USB Mouse

Well, this is neat. Apparently, some Switch 2 games will support you just plugging in a USB mouse and playing that way instead of using a controller or the Joy-Con's mouse-like features. I'll be curious to test this out when the console arrives next month. When the Switch 2 was announced, we learned you can flip one of the console's Joy-Con on its side and use it as a mouse. It's a really cool idea that might help RTSes and RPGs play better on Nintendo's upcoming console. Our own Kenneth Shepard played around with the Switch 2's Joy-Con mouse features and walked away sold on the tech, saying it works pretty well assuming you have a table and a comfy setup. But if you just want to use an actual USB mouse, well, it seems like that will be an option, too, at least in some games on Switch 2. On May 22, as spotted by Wario64 on Twitter, Koei Tecmo uploaded an official gameplay stream of Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening CE running on Switch 2. About 10 minutes into the gameplay demo, the game's producer Michi Ryu pulled out a USB mouse, plugged it into the console, and started playing the game with it. 'Once you connect the USB mouse, a message will appear in the top left indicating that the mouse is connected,' said Ryu via English subtitles. 'When the USB mouse is connected, it takes priority over the Joy-Con 2.' During the demo, the producer also demonstrated that you can switch between the Joy-Con and the mouse instantly as often as you want, letting you use them both at the same time. Kotaku has pinged Nintendo for more details about the Switch 2 supporting USB mice. I also asked them if the console will support USB keyboards. If so, that would make the Switch 2, which launches on June 5, even more of a direct competitor to the Steam Deck. Either way, I'm excited that the console will support more control options, as that allows more people to play in whatever way works best for them. . Be careful what you read about an Elden Ring movie

On Tuesday, a publication called Nexus Point News published a headline for what looked to be a major piece of entertainment news: 'EXCLUSIVE: Alex Garland Set To Direct 'Elden Ring' Film For A24.' The article claimed that Elden Ring 'is expected to be Garland's next film' and that shooting is expected to start in 2026. But don't get your hopes up: soon after the article was published, Nexus Point News pulled it, and the publication won't say why. How this article made the rounds is an interesting case study in the way news travels on the internet. We first saw the Nexus Point News article from a Wario64 post on X. Generally, Wario64 is a great account to follow to see breaking news in video games almost as soon as it happens. And the account is quite popular, with more than 1 million followers on X. But none of us at The Verge had ever heard of Nexus Point News, let alone recognized it as a place that reliably breaks entertainment news, so something didn't seem right. (Another recent Nexus Point News 'exclusive' includes a potential cast member 'being eyed' for one of the male leads of Star Wars: Starfighter, but the article includes an update that says 'a LucasFilm spokesperson has denied this reporting.') So I messaged Wario64, asking why he reposted it. He said that the person who posted a thread on the gaming forum ResetEra claimed the site was reliable and that 'I guess I'm sharing cause I too think it's absurd lol.' That thread appears to be this one, where the poster says, in a reply to somebody asking 'bro what the fuck is this source lmaooo,' that 'Nexus point news is pretty reliable, they are breaking more and more news before the traditional trades.' Soon after, I refreshed the Nexus Point News story and saw that it had been taken down. I told Wario64 that we were looking into the story on our end and about its removal. Soon after, Wario64 posted about the removal and deleted the original tweet. A24's Sophia Shin also declined to comment on the record. The possibility of an Elden Ring adaptation seems likely. FromSoftware said in early 2022 that it hoped to expand the franchise 'beyond the realm of games.' George R.R. Martin, who provided the 'mythos' for the world of Elden Ring, hinted last year that some kind of adaptation might be in the works. And FromSoftware is about to release Elden Ring Nightreign, a multiplayer-focused spinoff, so announcing a film around now would make some sense. But for the moment, there's nothing official about an Elden Ring movie.
