First Nintendo Switch 2 unboxing has already happened but there's a catch
Switch 2 consoles are now out in the wild, but Nintendo has a safeguard in place to stop people from playing the console before launch.
We're just over a week away from the Switch 2's launch on Thursday, June 5 and some retailers have already received stock in advance of the big day.
Like all console launches, the problem with sending stock to retailers is that it virtually ensures that leaks will happen – especially as some shops appear to be leaving Switch 2 consoles in public view.
It turns out, Nintendo has concocted a plan to counter this concern, by making the console useless until a day one patch is released.
This detail was confirmed after someone on YouTube posted a video showing them unboxing the Switch 2 console. The video has since been taken down (although it's been shared elsewhere), but in the comments, they claimed the console is 'locked' and 'needs update to function'.
Someone else supported this claim to gaming deals guru Wario64, stating that when they try to boot up an original Switch game on the Switch 2, a message reads: 'Please connect to the internet and update your system.'
While it's unclear if this update is required in order to play Switch 2 games, it's safe to assume that's the case considering no leaked footage of Mario Kart World has (at the time of writing, at least) made its way online.
If there are restrictions on how Switch 2 works without online connectivity then that is going to be very poorly received by fans, but that would be quite out of keeping with Nintendo's usual approach. More Trending
So far there's no indication that physical copies of games need any kind of online connection to work but no one's going to know for sure until next week.
It's possible the update mentioned is tied to backwards compatibility. Nintendo has already said some original Switch games, including Doom Eternal and Pizza Tower, require an update to function on the Switch 2, which will be rolled out 'by launch or shortly after'.
Either way, whether intentional or not, this seems to mean that anyone who does get a Switch 2 before launch won't be able to play the system early.
Aside from Mario Kart World, the Switch 2's launch line-up includes Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Split Fiction, and many others.

New Nintendo Switch 2 bundles will be available at launch, but not everyone will be able to buy them and not just because of limited stock. You're no doubt already aware how difficult it has been to secure a Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order, ever since they went live last month – despite Nintendo's efforts to make enough stock to meet demand. Now that launch week is upon us, some UK retailers have announced that they'll be able to supply a small amount of Switch 2 consoles on launch day itself, which is Thursday, June 5. Smyths is running a midnight launch across its stores, Argos has informed customers that it'll have new stock by launch day morning, and now a new set of bundles have been announced… although they do require some extra hoop jumping. These bundles will be exclusively available through mobile network operator and internet service provider EE and its own online store. Not everyone can just hop on and purchase them though; you need to already be an EE mobile customer. If you are, then this is a golden opportunity for scoring a Switch 2 at launch. Plus, you don't need to pay the full price straight away, as EE is offering monthly plans. The first bundle is for the console and a copy of Mario Kart World (EE hasn't specified if it's a digital or physical copy). Normally, Nintendo sells this for £429.99, but EE's deal asks for £20 upfront followed by monthly payments of £22 on a 24-month plan. More Trending This does come to £548 in total, but the bundle also includes a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription (the one that'll let you access GameCube games) and 24 months of Gamer's and Video Data Passes for streaming and playing games without using up your mobile data allowance. The second bundle is the same as the first, but it throws in the Switch 2 camera accessory as well. For this, you pay £20 upfront and then £25 a month on a 24-month plan. The third and final one has all the same content as the second one, plus an extra pair of Joy-Con 2s and £50 of game credit. It is the most expensive of the lot, requiring the usual £20 starting fee and then £30 a month on a 24-month plan. If you meet the criteria, you'll be able to purchase one of these bundles on EE's own online store on June 5. Unfortunately, EE doesn't mention an exact time for when they'll go live, and you know these will sell out super quickly, despite being limited to EE customers. The show that deserves to be bigger than Line of Duty reveals major news
The Gary Oldman-led spy drama is one of the best shows on right now (Picture: AP) One of the best shows currently on air is returning with a new season in a matter of months. After several seasons as a sleeper hit, the word of mouth truly caught on last year when Apple TV Plus brought Slow Horses back for a fourth season – and we now know when season five is coming. In a TV landscape when regular release dates are a pipe dream, the Gary Oldman-led spy drama is one of the dramas we can regularly rely on. The first two episodes of season five will premiere on September 24, kicking off a season based on Mick Herron's London Rules novel. Our group of loser spies will reconvene in Slough House: the rubbishy government building where operatives are put out to paperwork pasture after some sort of fiasco in the job. Alongside the regular cast including Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden (a soon-to-be father!) and Rosalind Eleazar, the fifth season welcomes a guest star in Ted Lasso's salt and pepper coach Nick Mohammed as a politico. Slow Horses follows a team of MI5 rejects led by Oldman's Lamb (Picture: Jack English/Apple TV+/AP) Saskia Reeves is Oldman's sparring partner in the drab Slough House purgatory (Picture: Apple TV+) The upcoming season is set to centre around Roddy (Christopher Chung) – who's sporting an interesting new man bun in the first look pictures – and his new girlfriend, who actually isn't a catfish this time. As ever, its the Slow Horses who are on hand to set the world to rights. With six episodes soon to be with us, we already know this season won't be the end of the road for Slough House. The show has already been renewed for a sixth season, which the production team are working away at even as the fifth hasn't aired yet. 'If you're playing mean and ugly and you have bad writing, then it's difficult. Offensive mean and ugly with [writer] Will Smith and Mick Herron is a lot easier,' he told and other press in a roundtable. 'It's enormous fun, I really do have to say. I think people – everyone's had that boss, or you've met those people along the way where I think secretly you would just love to be brutally honest. And I think that's what we find amusing and funny about Lamb. There's something that we maybe recognize or go, 'Oh, I wish I could talk to someone like that. There's no filter!' Taking to social media, GAME said: "We understand how disappointing this is, especially for those who have been eagerly awaiting their order." On the official Nintendo website, the Nintendo Switch 2 can be pre-ordered by Nintendo Switch Online members for £395.99. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle costs more at £429.99.
