HBO to build on-set school for 'Harry Potter' child stars as series begins production
As HBO's 'Harry Potter' series kicks off production, Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden is laying the groundwork—quite literally—for a decade-long journey back to Hogwarts. According to the BBC, the studio is constructing a dedicated school on its campus to accommodate the dozens of young actors cast in the show. The temporary educational facility, approved by the UK's Three Rivers District Council, will serve as a functional school during the series' expected 8 to 10-year production run. Made up of portable buildings, the school has been designed to support up to 600 pupils during crowd-heavy filming days but will typically operate with around 150 students. It will run weekdays from 5:30 am to 8:30 pm, giving child actors the flexibility to balance their studies with long hours on set—including night shoots and reshoots. While planning documents didn't directly name 'Harry Potter', they did reference a 'significant new TV series' anchoring itself at Leavesden Studios over the next decade. That series is indeed HBO's reimagined adaptation of J.K. Rowling's beloved books, which the network confirmed officially began production on July 15. Casting for the lead roles reportedly drew 32,000 audition tapes from hopefuls across the globe. The final cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, alongside Lox Pratt (Draco Malfoy), Alessia Leoni (Parvati Patil), Leo Earley (Seamus Finnigan), Rory Wilmot (Neville Longbottom), and Amos Kitson (Dudley Dursley). The 'Harry Potter' series is slated to premiere on HBO and Max in 2027.

Harry Potter TV series gets on-set school for child actors
Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden has received official approval to build a temporary on-site school facility for young actors working on the new Harry Potter television series. The decision was granted by Three Rivers District Council. The studio, located near Watford, will use a series of portacabins as classrooms to accommodate child performers involved in the production. While designed to serve up to 600 pupils during crowd scenes, the school will typically host around 150 students at a time. The facility will operate weekdays between 5:30am and 8:30pm, allowing child actors to manage academic commitments alongside filming schedules that may include night shoots and location work. Planning documents describe the project as supporting a 'significant new TV series' expected to be based at the studio for the next 8 to 10 years. Although the documents do not mention Harry Potter directly, HBO confirmed earlier this week that filming on the reboot has begun in Leavesden. Scottish actor Dominic McLaughlin has been cast as Harry Potter in the series. HBO reported that over 32,000 children auditioned for the leading roles following an open casting call in September. The school setup is approved for use for up to 10 years, with some construction elements noted as already underway at the time of the application.

The adaptation has also revealed a first look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, smiling in costume with the character's signature round glasses and school uniform. McLaughlin is joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The new golden trio was selected from more than 30,000 actors who auditioned in a casting call last fall. New casting announced on Monday includes Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander. The series has also been confirmed to debut in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max. Led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod of 'Succession,' HBO's new take on the beloved book-turned-movie franchise will follow the young Potter as he discovers he's a wizard, leaves his Muggle family behind, and sets off to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Along the way, he befriends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger and battles Lord Voldemort. The reimagining also stars John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge and Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby as Petunia and Vernon Dursley. Newly announced department heads joining costume designer Holly Waddington include Adriano Goldman (director of photography), Cate Hall (hair and makeup designer), Paul Herbert (stunt coordinator), Mark Holt (SFX supervisor), Mara LePere-Schloop (production designer), Naomi Moore (set decorator), John Nolan (creature effects design supervisor), Alexis Wajsbrot (VFX supervisor) and Dom Sidoli (VFX producer). The series is written and executive produced by Gardiner. Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes, which is being made by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros.
