The Hong Kong Observatory says it will issue the Standby Signal No. 1 at 8.40 am on Wednesday as Severe Typhoon Podul is expected to come within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong over the next few hours.
Forecasters say a higher signal is possible later on.
"Depending on the distance between Podul and the Pearl River Estuary, its intensity and the change in local winds, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals later today to early tomorrow," a spokesman said in a statement.
The observatory added that the subsiding air of the weather system will bring very hot weather over Guangdong on Wednesday, with showers to affect the region later in the day.
Podul is expected to make landfall over the vicinity of eastern Guangdong to southern Fujian on Thursday, bringing heavy squally showers and thunderstorms to Hong Kong.
