Summer ferry schedule about to set sail

The Washington State Ferry System is adding more boats to the fleet this summer. This is part of the updated seasonal ferry schedule to make sure everyone gets where they need to go. They say the main goal is to make the ferries accessible for everyone, meaning with the extra service, people won't have to wait in line for these ferries nearly as long. Right now, there are 15 ferries in service, and soon that number will jump to 18 during the summer months. In total, WSF has 21 operational ferries, but the last three are only rotated in if another ferry is broken. Dana Warr with WSF said the additional Bremerton ferry service begins June 15, the 'Triangle' gets a third boat on June 30, and the Port Townsend/Coupeville line will have increased service every weekend starting July 4. Warr tells us the International Ferry Route to Canada is also in the works, but that won't be in the water until 2030. 'That's very exciting very good news because the less you have to wait the better it is the better your day is,' ferry passenger Kathy Burke said. This is returning the ferry service to almost full capacity, three years ahead of schedule. 'We understand the struggles that the community and people working have had trying to get back and forth we are excited to bring more boats in,' Warr said. Some ferry riders, like Marshall, tell us they see a lot of delays and cancellations. 'We wait all the time, especially for the islands, going out to Friday Harbor, that's the big one. You really have to know your schedules and holidays, anything like that that might be happening,' Marshall said. Burke tells us the increased service will make traveling much easier. 'It's just something you learn to live with when you use the ferries and live in Washington,' Burke said. There can always be unexpected interruptions, so even with the increased service, make sure to check the ferry schedule before you go.

State Government yet to confirm if funding for Geraldton RFDS base will be included in next month's Budget

The State Government is remaining coy about funding for a Geraldton base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service in its upcoming Budget. One of Labor's commitments ahead of the State election was to provide $7.5 million for a local RFDS base, which at the time was estimated to be about half the required amount to deliver the facility. In Parliament on Tuesday, Geraldton MLA Kirrilee Warr put the question to Health Minister Meredith Hammat, asking what the status of the project was, whether the minister was aware of the cost, and why the Government was 'short-changing this critically important regional health facility'. In response, Ms Hammat acknowledged it was an important election commitment, but said the details would be revealed in next month's State Budget. 'All of our election commitments are subject to the budget process,' she said. 'The Budget will be handed down in this place in June and we will have more to say about it then.' When asked if the full amount would be delivered as part of the Budget, Ms Hammat said the State Government was proud of the commitment to deliver, but needed to respect the budget process. Ms Warr urged the State Government to provide a clear update on the project. 'While the health minister hides behind the State Budget process, other ministers have already started promoting election commitments, such as the country week assistance program and the new Burswood Park entertainment precinct, well in advance of the Budget,' Ms Warr said. 'Ever since the election campaign ended, it appears WA Labor no longer views the RFDS base in Geraldton as a priority, despite the urgent need for this project.' Ms Hammat has been contacted for further comment.

Geraldton MLA Kirrilee Warr delivers inaugural speech to State Parliament, vows to put community first

Geraldton MLA Kirrilee Warr has delivered her inaugural speech to State Parliament, vowing to put the community first over the next four years. Ms Warr spoke from the heart on Tuesday, saying she stepped into Parliament to represent the community and give a voice to those who needed it most. 'I come into this role not claiming to have all the answers, but with a curious mind, an open heart and a fierce commitment to listen, learn and lead,' she said. 'To me, politics is about service above self. It's about community and people. It's about amplifying the voices of working individuals, families, young people, people with disabilities, Aboriginal communities, LGBTIQ people, culturally diverse groups and seniors. 'Those voices must be heard, respected and valued in every decision we make.' The Chapman Valley farmer told Parliament she had only ever called three postcodes home, and grew up with a community mindset and the value of hard work. She said her parents, Shirley and Milton Mincherton, had been role models through their acts of service and having an attitude of getting things done with whatever resources were available. While Ms Warr spent some time away from the Mid West due to study, she returned to the region in the 2000s. Since then, she said she saw many changes but was hopeful of what was to come. Oakajee and the Abrolhos Islands were some of the areas she highlighted as key, but the right investment would be needed to ensure the related industries thrived. 'Geraldton is a region full of opportunity, strategically positioned to unlock its full potential and build a prosperous future,' she said. 'As the member for Geraldton, I'm committed to championing the issues that matter most to our community, the concerns I hear every day, the priorities I can campaign to address.' Ms Warr vowed to fight for access to health care, affordable housing, education, better roads and improved services like telecommunications. However, crime was the big issue she aimed to tackle, saying people deserved to feel safe. 'We must tackle crime at its roots by addressing the underlying causes and properly funding local police with permanent rapid response teams in place,' she said. 'Building trust between residents and law enforcement through strong community programs is essential, alongside action to combat antisocial behaviour and create safe public spaces. 'Everyone deserves the Geraldton we remember where children played freely, neighbours watched without fear, and homes were places of true safety.' Ms Warr thanked various family and friends to conclude, and was met with a warm reception in Parliament once she had finished her speech.

Worcestershire garden centres get ready for busy long weekend

Plant growers and sellers have been getting ready for the busy Bank Holiday weekend – traditionally the point in the year when many people want to get their gardens in sunshine has seen sales in plants step up in Worcestershire, with businesses saying the weather "drives everything".At local Bransford Webb Plant Company, where a 45-acre site grows two million plants a year from seed to saplings, the team has been potting about 1,600 plants an hour to keep up with sunny spells forecast by the Met Office this weekend, amid some changeable and wet weather, companies are hoping for potentially record-breaking sales. David Childers, sales and marketing director at the Bransford Webb Plant Company, said: "If you went back six weeks from now, we're at the end of February, early March, it was grey, it was damp."People couldn't get out in their gardens because it was too wet after a wet winter, and equally plants weren't growing much because the light levels and temperatures weren't there."He said that getting to mid-March, the temperatures have increased, adding: "It's gone dry, people are out gardening, garden centres are seeing a massive footfall increase - and then we've seen that turn into sales as people convert that into plant deliveries." 'Inspired by sunshine' Plants leaving the sheds at his company are heading to garden centres up and down the country, including family-owned Laylocks Garden Centre in Worcester, which had its best March in 43 years last Warr, director at Laylocks, said the recent sunshine had brought in the customers and they were expecting a busy weekend over said everyone wanted to be in their gardens as soon as the weather turned added: "They see a huge space outside to use and they're inspired as soon as the sun starts to shine. They want to come here and decorate." Follow BBC Hereford & Worcester on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram.
