Mother-of-two gets criminal record after CCTV operator spots her slapping boyfriend in the face during 'silly' argument outside bar
A mother of two has been convicted after being caught on CCTV slapping her boyfriend in the face outside a bar in an argument described by a magistrate as 'silly'. Victoria Woodward, 38, and Connor Thompson had been feuding in the street at pub closing time when she suddenly struck him in Warrington, Cheshire. As the couple then carried on walking through town centre, she was unaware that CCTV operators had contacted police and provided footage of the attack. Officers traced the couple four minutes later and questioned Woodward who was subsequently charged with assault when she admitted slapping Mr Thompson. He declined to be co-operate with the investigation. Woodward has now admitted assault by beating at Warrington Magistrates' Court, where she was conditionally discharged for 18 months and ordered to pay £111 in costs and surcharge. The penalty for what was Woodward's first offence was said to have been 'uplifted' due to the 'domestic context' of the incident. Magistrates were told Mr Thompson, who is in his 30s and works for an electrical firm, did not support the prosecution and police were unable to record any injury. The maximum sentence for assault by beating is six months behind bars. Robert Earl, prosecuting, said: 'The defendant and the victim were in a relationship. They were out on the town at 11.20pm on April 19 this year. 'There had been a verbal argument of some description and it ended up with the defendant slapping her boyfriend across the face. 'The officers stopped her and she admitted assaulting her partner. She was interviewed under caution. ' Mr Earl added: 'The defendant has no previous convictions. She has been of good character. 'As to the assault, there is no evidence of injury. The victim has not supported the prosecution. 'But this offence is aggravated because of the domestic context and also because the offence was committed in drink.' Representing herself, Warrington resident Woodward told the court: 'I know it was completely unacceptable. I could not be more sorry.' Sentencing her, JP Brian Gallagher told Woodward: 'Obviously today you have lost your good character and there will be a criminal conviction. 'All of it was silly. It was in drink but you have shown remorse which is important. You have held your hands up and you have not prevaricated. 'Normally, a conditional discharge would have been for 12 months but because of the domestic context it is uplifted. Learn your lesson from this. Do not come back.' Most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics last November suggested an estimated 1.6million women and 712,000 men suffered domestic abuse over the previous 12 months. This was described by officials as a 'prevalence rate of approximately 6.6 per cent of women and three per cent of men'.
