Brock Nelson signs 3-year contract extension with Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche signed forward Brock Nelson to a three-year contract extension with an average annual value of $7.5 million, the team announced Wednesday. Nelson, 33, played the first 12 years of his NHL career with the New York Islanders before he was acquired by the Avalanche before last year's trade deadline. The deal sent prospect Calum Ritchie, a first-round pick in 2026 and a third-round pick in 2028 to Long Island in exchange for Nelson, who will now be in Colorado through the 2027-28 season. Advertisement Nelson, who had been a pending unrestricted free agent, was ranked No. 1o by Chris Johnston on The Athletic's free-agent big board. Nelson appeared in 19 regular-season games for the Avalanche following the trade, producing six goals and seven assists. He didn't record a goal in Colorado's seven playoff games against Dallas, but had four assists while playing mostly as the second-line center. The Warroad, Minn., native is a perennial 20- to 30-goal scorer. He scored 26 times this season after three-straight 30-goal seasons with the Islanders prior to that, and has reached the 20-goal threshold in nine of his 11 full NHL seasons. He has made one All-Star Game appearance in his career, in 2023, and also played for Team USA in this year's 4 Nations Face-off. 'He's been a great center in this league for a long time, and he brings professionalism and a dedicated work ethic on and off the ice,' Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said in a news release. 'We think he will be a great fit and will be a stabilizing presence to our second-line center role with his size and ability to touch all areas of the ice. We're excited to see what his contributions will be over a larger sample size with the Avalanche.' Nelson strengthens Colorado's center depth behind superstar Nathan MacKinnon. He also played on the second power-play unit for most of his brief time with the Avalanche this season. His $7.5 million cap hit makes him the second-highest-paid forward on the team, and the. third-highest-paid player behind MacKinnon and Cale Makar. 'My family and I are excited to be staying in Colorado,' Nelson said in the release. 'Having spent my entire career with one organization, we weren't totally sure what to expect when we arrived in Denver. But getting the opportunity to play for the Avalanche, to compete with a great group of teammates in that locker room, and in front of the tremendous fans at Ball Arena, we knew this was where we wanted to stay. Advertisement 'I'd like to thank the Kroenke family, Joe Sakic, Chris MacFarland, Jared Bednar and our coaching staff for the opportunity. Obviously the way the season ended last year was disappointing, but I can't wait to get back on the ice soon and continue to push for our goal of winning the Stanley Cup.'

DNR seeks comment on proposed OHV trail grants
May 10—ST. PAUL — The Roseau Parks and Recreation Department in northwest Minnesota is seeking funding from the Department of Natural Resources' off-highway vehicle grant-in-aid program for a proposed 10.4-mile OHV trail. In a news release, the DNR said the proposed route would connect to the Great Northern Connection Veterans Memorial Trail, which links Roseau and Warroad. The OHV GIA program is a cost-share partnership between the DNR, local government sponsors and local clubs to fund the maintenance and development of trails for all-terrain vehicles, off-highway motorcycles and off-road vehicles. The DNR is accepting public comments on the proposed Roseau project — and the city's request for $3,496.64 — along with four other projects in Becker, St. Louis, Aitkin and Kanabec counties, until 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 30. Comments may be submitted by email to Molly Lou Pintok at — indicate the name of the proposed trail(s) being commented on in the subject line and email body; or by postal to Molly Lou Pintok, Principal Planner, Minnesota DNR, Parks and Trails Division, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55155 A map of the proposed trail segments for each of the projects up for comment can be found at the DNR's OHV trail plans and proposals webpage at . For more information, call Pintok at (651) 259-5095. In related news, many of Minnesota's more than 3,000 miles of trails for all types of OHVs and rider skill levels are now open for use, the DNR said. Before heading out to the trails, riders should remember these key points: * Know before you go. Some trails may open later than normal due to late spring thaw, flooding, and trail maintenance work. Check the OHV Trail Closures web page ( ) before leaving home. Download maps to a smartphone before heading out to know your location utilizing Avenza. Remember to stay on signed and mapped trails. * Be safety certified. Riders born after July 1, 1987, are required to complete online ATV safety training before riding an ATV on trails. People under age 16 must complete the hands-on component of ATV safety training in addition to the online training. Online safety training for off-highway motorcycle operators under 16 is required before operating on OHM trails. Off-road vehicles may be operated only by individuals ages 16 and older. The Department of Natural Resources and its network of volunteer instructors offers training courses open to everyone. Find information online about upcoming recreational vehicle safety trainings ( ). * Be registered. OHV registration is legally required when riding on state and grant-in-aid trails, and those registration fees support trail construction, trail maintenance and OHV safety. For more information, visit the OHV registrations web page ( ). * Help out. Most trails in Minnesota are built and maintained by clubs and funded through the GIA program. Consider joining a club to help maintain one of these trails. For riders who are interested in trying the trails but aren't ready to commit to OHV registration, there are two upcoming no-registration events: * May 17: For off-road vehicles at the Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle State Recreation Area near Gilbert, Minnesota. * June 14-15: For ATVs statewide. For information on where to ride, regulations and safety training, check out the OHV program website at .

Dodge County ends Warroad's reign in state championship overtime thriller
The Class A championship game of the Girls Hockey State Tournament will go down as one of the best in tourney history, and it was Dodge County ending Warroad's three-year run as state champs with a 4-3 overtime victory Saturday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The ending was one that only the State of Hockey could produce. After trailing 3-1, Warroad rallied to force overtime and with 63 seconds left in the eight-minute extra session, Zoe Heimer collected a rebound after a shot fluttered off the goal pipe and slid the puck into crowd. The puck slid across the line for the winning goal, but Heimer was the only person on the ice to know the game was over. The officials whistled the play dead and the goal wasn't confirmed until a lengthy replay review was complete, giving the Wildcats the first state title in girls hockey history. The game was intense from start to finish. Taylor Reese broke the ice with the first goal of the game for Warroad at 14:21 of the first period, but 33 seconds later Heimer equaled the score for Dodge County. Goals by Kylie Meyer early in the second period and Noah Carstensen early in the third period gave the No. 1-seed Wildcats a two-goal cushion. Dodge County maintained the lead until the Warriors struck twice in the span of 39 seconds midway through the third period, and it was Vivienne Marcowka finding the back of the net for both. Warroad reached the title game by outlasting Orono 2-1 in a triple-overtime thriller on Friday. They got as close as a team can get to a four-peat, having won the last three Class A state titles by defeating Proctor/Hermantown in the 2021-22 title game, Orono in the 2022-23 state championship, and Dodge County last year. The Class AA state championship game features Edina against Hill-Murray.

Warroad defeats Orono in triple-overtime thriller to reach state title game
Freshman Lindsey Lorenson's goal 1:20 into the third overtime lifted the Warroad Warriors to a dramatic 2-1 win over the Orono Spartans to start Day 3 of the Girls State Hockey Tournament on Friday. Lorenson found herself with the puck and skating down the slot when she deked a defender and fired a wrist shot into the upper-right corner of the net to end a marathon semifinal game and send the Warriors to Saturday's championship game. Warroad is going for a fourth straight state championship in Class A. "It was just unreal," Lorensen said on the 45TV broadcast about her goal and the dog pile on the ice that followed. "My ribs got smushed a little bit but it's OK. Orono had 62 shots on goal compared to 40 for Warroad, but Warroad junior goalie Payton Rolli made 61 saves. Vivienne Anderson stopped 38 shots for Orono. Warroad will face the winner of the other Class semifinal between No. 1 Dodge County and No. 4 Academy of Holy Angels. The Class AA semifinals Friday night feature No. 1 Edina against No. 5 Holy Family Catholic, and No. 3 Hill-Murray versus No. 7 Rosemount.
