Scattered debris on Main Road raises concerns

Residents are encouraged to report illegal dumping, as it continues to be an issue in Midrand. Concerns are rising about the ongoing illegal dumping along Main Road, near Leeuwkop Prison. Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe has spoken out about the persistence of waste left by the roadside, with plastics, papers, and scattered debris visible along the sideroad. 'I reported this issue three weeks ago, at the councillor forum meeting, yet no action has been taken. The problem is located near Leuwkop Prison, by the bridge. It is concerning that someone would think it's acceptable to dispose of their rubbish in this way.' She insists that residents must actively report any instances of illegal dumping they observe to the city. The City of Johannesburg's by-laws address illegal dumping, with the Waste Management By-Laws 2021 being a key document. Illegal dumping on private land falls under the jurisdiction of the Environmental Health Directorate. These by-laws likely outline regulations, potential penalties, and enforcement procedures regarding waste disposal to maintain environmental health. For the removal of illegal dumping, residents can call Joburg Connect on 0860 562 874 or 0860-JOBURG. Pikitup only attends to illegal dumping on pavements, streets, and council-owned land, while illegal dumping in parks is the responsibility of City Parks. To report illegal dumping to Pikitup, residents may call 011 688 1500 or email: [email protected].
