Rodney Atkins's 2006 Song 'Watching You' Gets an Emotional Update

When we think back on the early 2000s, a few country songs stand out. As much as we love the fierce nature of Miranda Lambert's 'Kerosene' and Carrie Underwood's 'Before He Cheats,' when it comes to heart-warming singles, 'Watching You' by Rodney Atkins has to be at the top of the list. And now, nearly 20 years after its initial release, the 56-year-old singer is dropping 'Watching You 2.0'—this time, with his son on back-up vocals. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rodney Atkins (@rodneyatkins) As a refresher, Rodney released 'Watching You,' a touching song inspired by his then-five-year-old son, Elijah, in 2006. As the story goes, Rodney found out that little Elijah had been singing his famous single, 'If You're Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows),' in class. Upon realizing just how much his son picked up from day-to-day life, Rodney co-wrote 'Watching You' with Steve Dean and Brian White. Then, he turned it into a precious music video with Elijah in the starring role. Fast forward nearly two decades, and Rodney is bringing back the beloved track, this time with Elijah (now 23), singing the chorus. The rebooted single is set to release on Friday, May 23, and fans can hardly contain their excitement. 'I can't wait! This was and still is a fave song of mine! Can't wait for the 2.0 version,' one fan exclaimed in the comments section. 'Still better than any country song currently on the radio,' someone else commented. 'I am in love with this version! I grew up with the original, and I always thought it would be cool if his son sang the chorus! I'm so glad they made it happen! It's a beautiful moment,' another fan remarked. While some of Rodney's fans have a lot to say about Elijah's vocals, others made a point to commend Rodney on his parenting style. 'The thing I love about this is they are clearly not the same style at all, but his dad accepts that and [supports] him in this. So often, parents have a hard time accepting their kids' style differences. But he's like, nah, this kid may sing like Post Malone in a hay bale, but he's mine,' one fan commented.
