Make Hyderabad pollution-free, eco-friendly city, chief minister Revanth Reddy tells officials
Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday directed officials to expedite shifting of polluting industries in the city to outside Outer Ring Road (ORR) and prepare comprehensive plans with an eye on the next 25 years to make Hyderabad a pollution-free, eco-friendly city. At a review meeting with the officials of municipal administration and urban development at the Command Control Centre, the CM said people were facing inconvenience in Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai due to extreme pollution. 'Such a situation should not prevail in Hyderabad. Polluting industries in the core city should be shifted outside the ORR. Necessary reforms should be undertaken to make Hyderabad pollution-free, and plans should be prepared keeping in mind the needs of the next 25 years. The problems being faced in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai should be studied for this,' he said. Officials of the respective departments should pay special attention to underground drainage and underground electricity cabling projects in the city. All the departments concerned should prepare comprehensive detailed project reports (DPRs) in this regard. 'Single-use plastic should be banned. Construction debris should not be allowed to be dumped anywhere in the city. Strict action should be taken against those who do so intentionally. The Water Board should plan for a complete reform of the water supply and sewage system by coming out with a special plan to make the best use of its resources,' the CM said. Bookings for water tanker surge by 36 per cent amid scanty rains in Hyderabad
HYDERABAD: With rainfall remaining scarce recently, Hyderabad is witnessing a sharp 36% spike in water tanker bookings compared to the same period last year. HMWSSB managing director K Ashok Reddy has directed officials to stay prepared for further increases in bookings, citing depleted groundwater levels across several parts of the city. Between July 1 and 14 last year, 63,724 tankers were booked, while this year, the number has jumped to 86,520. Out of the nearly 14 lakh connections under the Water Board's jurisdiction, around 42,000 households have relied on tankers for their water needs. However, just 500 users accounted for 31,000 tanker bookings during the 75-day summer stretch, while 22,000 users booked 90% of the total 2.84 lakh tankers. A survey conducted by HMWSSB revealed that many of these households lacked Rain Water Harvesting Structures (RWHS). In response, notices were issued and awareness campaigns launched, urging residents to construct RWHS pits within 90 days. So far, 16,000 property owners have received notices. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy stated that households larger than 300 square yards within the ORR must install RWHS pits. They warned of possible action, including increased tanker rates, for non-compliance. HMWSSB has been asked to identify and prepare a list of households without RWHS pits within the next month.

A spokesperson for the local water board stated: "We continue to recommend using water only for strictly essential needs. "We apologise for the inconvenience," they added. The statement continued: "We continue to implement all emergency measures to maintain the water supply: activation of the Gotmar and Can Colet wells, which, together with our other wells, are operating 24 hours a day. "Despite these efforts, the supply is affected and there may be drops in pressure or temporary service interruptions". According to the Water Board, supply cuts will occur in Llenaira, Es Pinaret, Putxet, Gotmar, Can Singala, Urbanización de Bóquer, Air Base and Siller. The cuts are expected to take place between 1pm and 7pm local time (2pm and 8pm BST) on Monday. There is growing concern in the region, particularly due to the fact that Pollensa hotels and apartments are nearly at 100% occupancy as the busy tourist season begins. Pollensa has a high tourist-to-resident ratio, one of the highest in the Balearic Islands. In August, the number of tourists can exceed the number of residents. Specifically, Pollensa has a tourist-to-resident ratio of 24.8 - significantly higher than the Balearic average of 10.25 and more than four times that of Barcelona on the mainland. In August last year alone, the town had just under 59.5k tourists. The ancient town has been heralded as one of Majorca's must-see areas. It features attractive narrow streets and an impressive main square lined with cafés, restaurants and bars. All this is just a few miles from Port de Pollenca, a resort particularly popular with Brits for holidays and second homes. The town has several places of interest to visit, including the still operational Roman bridge, "Pont Roma", and the Puig de Pollensa, a small mountain topped by a monastery, just outside the town. The Plaça Mayor, dominated by a Parroquial church dating back to the 18th century, is the scene of one of Majorca's best Sunday markets, attracting many nationalities. The square offers several good cafes where you can enjoy a café con leche and watch the world go by.
